Im glad you mentioned context ! Because reading the entire chapter reveals that this chapter is spoken in symbollisim! It speaks of the kingdom representing ten virgins for example, you are taking that portion of the chapter literally, if that part is literal, so is the rest of the chapter ! obviously it is not. The begining says the kingdom of heaven will be (like) ten virgins. That indicates that this will be symbollic !

The orthodox Jews understand sheol to be a place. Not only that Jesus spoke of Hades as a place in Luke 16:19-31.
