I don't know much about flying yet, but I joined Civil Air Patrol...Aren't you just supposed to abort landing if you get that far, and take another shot?
Seriously why on earth did he not go around, he had too much speed on short final and floated for ages. This is the worst decision I have ever seen . I bet the insurance company will not pay out for that one.
looks like a tough downhill landing over an obstacle...too bad he was going way too fast and overshot most of the runway. Going around is a little cheaper than engine rebuilds last time i checked.
well atleast it was a soft landing at the beach. Ladies and Gentlemen we have arrived at St Bathelemy enjoy your stay........ I need a beer and a lawn chair get me out of this cockpit! lol
That is why that Gustaf III Airport is a dangerous and a scary airport, just because that there is a lot of incidents (well, maybe some) at Gustaf III Airport. It's due that you have to go over a hill and then descend and then land at the airport, it adds a bit speed causing a challenge. But the other runway side is easy, even though that no buildings are in your way.
This is what he should do: He should go around and try again, or land at the other runway side.
doubt he was drunk wish people would quit saying pilots are drunks! He shoulda went around though, but none of us we're there he might have been very critical on fuel or had some sort of mechanical or possilibly a medical emergency that forced hit to get the plane on the ground without delay.
I rented a 172 there once and performed T&G's. The most exciting landings of my life. Plus as you climb over the beach, topless women will wave at you. :-)
@alienhuman ... :-) as crazy as it sounds, it is true. I had an instructor with me and they were still the most white-knuckled touch & gos of my life. The 25 knot crosswinds added to the excitement too!
@alienhuman I was there on vacation for a week and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to learn to land here. To go it alone, one has to have a sign-off from an instructor to obtain a permit. And to get the sign-off, I believe one has to have about 5- 10 successful landings (I don't remember the exact count), but it includes having to land each way on the runway (10 and 28). It's difficult to obtain the sign-off in one day because the winds are usually favor a RW 10 landing.
the approach was fast for the aztec, the pilot flared early so the aircraft floats and he missed the touch down zone, he could avert the incident if the pilot make a go around since he already passed the middle part of the runway length...
@bengals101 i agree with you... BUT how about if he had an engine failure ?... we dont know what happened inside the plane so =D ! we can just guess xD
Well, yeah, it WAS a bad landing, and he SHOULD have gone around, but man, there are some heavy breakmarks towards the end of that runway, so I bet he's not the first, and I'll also bet he's not the last either...
It wasnt the active runway, when your landing a plane, you land into the wind, if you land with a tailwind, your going to float and speed up, It is possible to land with a tailwind but it is very dangerous and should only be used in emergency landing situations.
Yes, it certainly is an Aztec. See the tailplane (trapez shape) an the ldg (retracted fwd not sideways). Seneca has rectangular tailplane and ldg links inward...
Definately inexperience and high workload led to a number of critical errors. Too bad he didnt close the engines to prevent an expensive teardown on 2 engines. Of course he should have gone round unless there was a fault with the plane but even then he should have closed the engines to prevent further significant damage. The way insurance companies work he will I expect have a hefty bill to pay depending on the engine life times as they only pay out proportionate amounts
why did he not go around? the dude was over like 3/4 of the runway before touchdown and was defo goin a bit too fast... he didnt look to comfortable with the airport either...
It's definite this dude didnt land at that airport too often. He put lives at risk by not going around. I dont think it was excessively fast cause I've seen many planes land at that airport but looking at it I dont think he landed there too often.
also cocky pilots are a potentioal danger to public safety and the safty of anyone in the aircraft. I hope this guy gets his pilot certification taken away

ok, i agree that i may have gone slightly over kill but when you look at the video it all comes down to basic common sence and basic skills that you get taught when going through your Private Pilot training. If it looks like you wont be able to stop in time safely or if it doesnt "Feel" right (unless in an emergancy situation), Go-Around. All on-board are lucky it didnt turn out worse than what it looked. the plane could have gone end over end into the water after hitting the sand.
