  • Hello, I want to get into machining, but I am not sure where to start. what are the essential tools used?

  • how can someone dislike this? anyway have you jointed the garage journal forum?

  • Whut?

    No 4 axis C.N.C. plasma cutter ?

How do you get anything done ?

    :-)

  • @agwhitaker

Yep....nothing like a manual shop. Takes time, but I do still have fun.

    Take care,

    John

  • I have the same issue, my shop covers nearly 100% of the wall space, alot of the floor space and is even going across the ceiling. I actually made metal brakets to hold long material above the garage door so as it can still open.

I will make a video sometime and give my little tour.

  • @mythril4

Thanks for watching and for your comments I am always looking for was to better utilize space and look forward to your video.

    All the best,

    John

  • Really nice tour! It gives me a lot of ideas for getting my small shop organized. Thank you for sharing your ideas with the rest of us.

  • @MGARestoration

Thanks for your comments...glad you were able to pick up a few tips...but your right it is crowded!

    ---John---

  • ...I thought I was doing good to have my stuff on stands but wheels? ain't that cheating? ;)

  • Luckilly John i am surrounded by three walls single garage partitioned off at 12 foot ish.

When working on one of the lathes or mills, everything is within reaching distance and easy to spot.

  • People are amased what i have in mine and have everything you have with the exception of two much bigger lathes and two mills.

Wall space is what you need, stuff goes up on racks and shelving.

I am geared more towards lathe and mill work, couldnt work like that, stuff needs to be quickly available, time is money.

One thing i have noticed i suspect you dont create much swarf as theres no where to throw it.

  • @jhareng

Thanks for watching my videos and for your comments. You are correct; it’s very tight in there. I really do need to use my wall space more effectively.

    All the best,

    John/W5CYF

  • i agree, its a great little shop. its amazing what you can do to a space when you have to make it work. i have the same problem with the small shed that i call a shop. have to make due with what the Lord gave you!

    excellent job!

  • Great small shop, I always pickup an idea or two from these shop tours, What I got from yours was the holders for the quick change tool, Great idea !

    Thanks for the post,

  • @EarlRausch

Thanks for your comments. Glad you were able to pick up a tip or two.

    ---John---

  • i hope you dont grind a lot in all those paper.

  • look great. small but can get the work done. I have 2 car gar. but more messy.

  • nice shop, i like the fact that you have wheels under alot of things.

  • great tools and machines but as a machinist myself I can't imagine working in such a confined space.. unsafe too.

  • @GnosisMan50 -- Thanks for watching my videos. You are correct, the shop is on the small side but I enjoy what I have. It's really not unsafe at all if one keeps focused on the task at hand....just like a big shop.

    John

  • Nice shop, mine is a huge mess right now.

  • @windandsun68 -- Here it's a small shop with HUGE mess! I think it's part of the process of building things. --John--

  • Great job! I had a single car garage with a nice home shop before I got divorced, sold EVERYTHING and moved into a 1br apartment. Now I've purchased a house with a 2 car garage which I have all to myself, and I'm slowly reacquiring tools and putting together a new shop. In the meantime I enjoy seeing how other folks have theirs set up too. Thanks for sharing.

  • Good job on untilizing your space . Had to down size once , thats a bummer, when i Keep e didn't think then i had enough space. Exerciseing your talent. Your a blessed man. Thanks for your time..

  • a lot of fun to make, where is the surface grinder?excuse me Sir, you forgot to mention the tissue paper ,just kidding.

  • the best thing you can do is to tell the ole lady im going to the shop and stick to yer guns-don't let them drag you all over the place-mine tries to-you really have to fight for your freedom

  • It's very interesting and helpful to see this.

  • Nice use of space!

  • Dude The Best machine you have in your shop is that Fridge is that where you keep your beverage of choice ?

  • Wow... nice shop man, must have taken you forever to get everything up and organized with all those shelves.

  • Fantastic organization! Thanks for showing what can be done with a small space!

  • Dude, what a thick accent!! anyways.. very nice shop, congratulations

  • Very nice setup.

  • Its 18 Drawers not 12....

  • great use of space mate, love your shop.

  • oily rags in an enclosed space major fire hazard, get them outside man

  • sweet shop, great use of space

  • do you know were i can buy a cheap 9x20 metal lathe i live in texas

  • I"ve had good luck with Craigs List. Look in the Dallas and Houston areas.

  • Im a so jealous of that shop! Its my dream to get someting like that...

  • The first rule of visitin anyone's shop is to stay out of their drawers. Nice shop !

  • I got 480 sq. ft. in my future shop, going to put 7 different machines...not counting the compressor & the welding machines, etc..

  • nice shop you got there but you have a lot of stuff but no welder and also where do you keep your drill bites

  • 5:31 thats 18 drawers sir. nice machine shop though

  • no welder?

  • yep...got three of them. Gas, stick and mig but they're off the screen stuck on the other side of the garage.

  • Wheres the welder at?

  • Good catch....it's there but out of the screen. With as few sq ft as I have, some things just have to be out of sight or I'll just trip over them :-)

    ---John---

  • Great idea on putting the quick change holders over angle stock. I'm stealing this Idea! Great video!

  • Thanks for your kind words. Feel free to steal the idea. BTW the angle stock is aluminum, not iron. ---John---

  • Probably 6061? I've got plenty just laying around.... Easier to cut too... I know about working in confined places, and organization IS key. Workin on buying my first house... Can't wait to have a garage! Basement machining sucks when you are 6' 2" and the ceiling is 5' 6"!

  • harbor freight, you get what you pay for

  • I have a living dead center.

  • What do you think of Harbor Freights 473 pound $499 multi machine?Ive git a coupon for 20%off.Are they a good deal?Icould really use a good mill for my gun work.

  • Don't bother with harbor freight, sure the prices are good, but the machinery is somewhat crappy. It will work for some time (with limited precision), then die out. Just look around craigslist for older milling machines. I got a great condition MillRite for $900 and it is about 100 times nicer than any harbor freight machine, at only a few hundred more. Harbor freight is great for small parts, bits, and accessories. But their machines aren't worth the hassle. Hope this helps

    Bob Doran

  • Sure does .Thanks!

  • I had to work in a tight shop befor. Never again! Too squished for me.

  • I know what you mean! I '*really* miss my large shop, but job change required move to smaller place. --John--

  • John, Awesome video thanks! I once knew this old time machinist that could make ANYTHING with a drill press and a few files. =)

  • thanks for putting that on youtube.

    You have an awesome shop.

I'm cramped for space too, so its time to

    add some wheels.

    RB-Josh's Dad

  • Sir, with respect, to hell with the other car. You need to expand the shop to the other side, add a Bridgeport and a large work bench. Build a carport on the outside of the garage for the car.

  • Hell Yeah, But it's nice to keep the wife happy... Like they say, "It's cheaper to keep 'er".

  • @midstatemachinery Ahahaha i Second this notion
