Actually if memory serves me here, this movie was not based on actual events but inspired by actual events, which is kind of the same but not really. The killer that leatherface is based on is Ed Gein born in 1906 and he was thought to have killed several people but only two were proven. He was a cannibal and skinned his victims and had sex with their dead bodies. He died in a mental institution in 1984. The story is he went mad after working in a slaughter house.

The greatest flaw in this scene is that Eric does quite bad acting here, he almost looks like he's thinking "oh I'm getting tortured, well that sucks".

This kind of acting was performed much better in the Hostel movies, where those who get tortured are rather convincing most of the time.
