I Love The Old Pontiacs, Especially The 1961's! I Noticed The One On This Video. Did You Happen To Know Anything About This One Or Any Of The Other Pontiacs That Were Racing? Thanks Again For Posting This!

  • Awesome video. Thank you for sharing.

  • Who else has some old movies converted to video from Island Dragway in New Jersey? Especially around the early 60's?

  • @Bluedeuce32

Charlie, I have some from "The Patch" 1962-64, I have some earlier from Montgomery and some mid '60s from E-Town . I don't know how to put the here or I would.

    Bob

  • Bob: I really don't know either. My buddy has taken some lately of my Nova and his Gran Prix (under "Slimbo5"), but they are digital and are easily put on the computer. I guess yours are 8mm or VHS and have to be changed first. Too bad; I'd love to see if my '61 Chevy is in any of them. - Charlie

  • @Bluedeuce32

One day we'll have to have a video viewing garage run.

  • Sweeet! I was hoping to see a 62 Pontiac, and I got to see about 4 of them in action! Thanks for sharing this guys!

  • First car was a '62 GP...wish I had it now!

  • I owned a 59 thunderbird like the one in this video. I ran that thing 140mph everynight on the way home. It felt like it was floating on air. Man the good ole days. Rich

  • That '59 Chevy smoked the '59 Ford!

  • I lived about three miles from the drag strip. Don't remember wally. Hard to remember anyone, in fact, so many years ago!

  • I worked at Island Dragway, in High School -- 1968

  • Did you live in hacketstown I went when they had the pacers and wally lynne was a top elimator with an alterd roadster

  • I thought about this video at work today. I couldn't wait to see it when I got home...

    Thanks!

  • ..."but that 413's really diggin' in!"

    very cool!

  • wow this is a awesme vid.. wish i was born 25 years earlier so i could expirience this. shame about the vid not having any sound tho. great vid kep them coming. amazingly i think this is the only video n youtube that desnt even have a single bad comment

  • awsome vid ! damn 413 was king then, then along came the 426 wedge a year later, which became the one to beat. chevy guys blushed with envy.

  • Back when raceing was the real deal...

  • ...and not a single Mopar???!!! I guess they weren't allowed to race, because they were too fast!!!

  • ..........maybe all the Mopars broke down on the way to the track.

  • the good old days...run what ya brung and drive it like you hate it...thanks... what memories

  • Cool vid, I truly believe those were the times I belonged in. Thanks for preserving the 8mm.

  • Awesome vid ! A great piece of history . . .

  • There's quite a few vintage racing video's out there, but this one ranks among the best. Thanks much gents for keeping the old 8mm, and to Rich for converting to digital then posting for our fun and help us remember our young and fun times.

  • Beach Boys

  • Close...Jan & Dean... ;-)

  • who is the music by? i love surf rock.

  • thats a good video but its not 1962 cos theres a 64 impala

  • Where did u see the 64 Impala? i only see 62 Chevy Impalas!

  • Sorry shanehaward87 there are no 64 Impalas in this 8mm, it was shot in 62 by my girlfriend now wife of me racing the Blue 62 Impala 409/409.

  • Yup, newest ride in this neet video is '62. Thanks Rich Galdi for convert and post and Thanks 626262impala for hanging onto the old 8mm. Now that you have it saved digital and friends can see this until your days are done. I'm an old pfart too and like a fool, didn't keep my stuff. Thanks again :-)

  • Great stuff

  • look's like them 1960 chevy's was burning it up 348 eng's i bet.

  • I wish I could have grown up then. I'm 18, and you seniors knew how to build them. Heres to 327s with 4.11 rear ends!

  • still run a 327...with 4:88's!

  • Boy! Does that bring back memories. I grew up in that time period in Winter Haven Florida. Had one of faster car's in town. It was a 64 Chevy Impala 327 4 speed. I still have it and it's still pretty quick. Thanks for the youtube very enjoyable.

  • Fantastic!

  • Drag racing in the snow, gotta love it. Handful of Pontiacs, way cool video. Thanks for posting.

  • Great!!!

  • For cars like this and more, checkout the 2008 California Hot Rod Reunion October 10 - 12 at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield...I'll be running the Rocket Muffler '55 Chevy Wagon... :)

  • I loved seeing the '59 Ford burning rubber!

  • OMG I grew up here my father raced all kinds of cars there for Scotties Mufflers most mentionable would be the Yellow Chevy Luv truck that pulled wheelies off the line. I just found out they filmed a movie there called Tasmanian devil in the '60s then found this short video awesome!!

  • @brollicONE theres tasmanian devil videos in here thats the pacers altered roadster i was there for that

  • Reminds me of attending my first drag event at 'double D'....that was Detroit Dragway in 1962.Seen Dyno Don Nicholson driving a 409 Chevy Biscayne & the Super Super Stock winner was another 409 from Arizona. They were goin' 12s then & we thought it was sooo fast.

  • This is not only a super video, but one of few that has not a negative comment. Growing up in Bergenfield, my freinds and I would make the weekly commute to Island in '61 and '62 out rt46(before I80 was completed). We'd have breakfast at the Hacketstown Diner spend the day in the pits and always return with white shoe polish on the windshield and left rear window indicating the class. I ran a C/G (gas) and then a B/A (altered), both street legal. We graduated in '62 and went then separate ways.

  • OMG! vintage!!! Now I'm convinced I'm old! I used to go every ...."Sunday Sunday at Raceway Park" just like the radio said. Wow brings back memories. thanks for the cool video.

  • Thats real racing! Not even a Christmas tree, just a flag man! Very cool! What is the name of the 2nd song playing? Anyone know?

  • The second song is Shut Down by The Beach Boys

  • @trebdude1 shut down the beach boys was a hit flip side

  • That reminds me of my racing days about ten years later in 1972. All the teens would borrow their parents car and take it to the drag stirp. I took my moms 67 Chevelle with a 327 engine and changed the heads, intake, carb. gear ratio, ignition and put headers on it without her knowlage. She got in the car and peeled out the driveway only to return and asked me what was wrong with her car! She claimed it made a very loud Squealing noise. I laughed and told her I just did a minor tune up. LOL

  • Wow, that's really cool! My dad grew up in the early '60s and worked at my uncle's Chevrolet dealership in Wayland. On weekends, they would race at 131 Dragway in Martin. Dad ran two '63 Impalas in B/Modified Production and did quite well.

  • thanks for the memories!! cool stuff!

  • Don Garlits broke the 200 MPH quarter mile at Island Dragway... i raced there too years ago...

  • Music, no. Car sounds, yes!

  • That that's some cool old footage! I love watching that stuff

  • THISIS SO GREAT

    It brings it all back.

I was there Every Summer Sunday morning we could with my buddy Howie

I ran my61 Saab all 3 cylinders and 2 cycle engine

I was matched with a Metropolitan and a HenryJthey both blew me off

Howie ran his 62 MoPar Plymouth Fury.

I can smell the rubber and feel the rumble of the engines in my guts just watching

  • I raced at Los Angeles County Raceway (Palmdale) for the last time last night...they're closing it in 2 weeks...thanks for everything, Bernie, Tim & Co....

  • This is pretty cool...I work at Island Dragway and it was way more crowded back then...

  • Who was there when Don Garlits raced T V Tommy Ivo and Ivo won?

  • Raced my tiger "Proud Mary" 64 GTO at Island Dragway back in the late 60's and early 70's.

Enjoyed every second at Great Meadows.

Melissa's granddad who opened up Island did a great job.Wish he was here.

    Dan

  • man, that was way cool! thanks for sharing.

  • Whatta Gem! Was ther a few weeks later as a 12 yr old sneaking in the pits. This has to be opening day 62 in March Notice the SNOW on the sides of the track!Made my 1st pass as a 17 yr old in a 55 Chev f-gas "Dudek bros". • Ford v. Chevy....yes...

    Honda v. Toyota...thankfully, no!

  • did they have that kind of things then too?

  • loser those days were way better.

  • Ford Vs. Chevy...long may it rage!

Better than Honda Vs. Toyota anyday! :)

  • We're from Rahway, NJ and my Dad still goes to this dragstrip. He thinks he recognizes a red Ford in the footage as belonging to someone who lived on Elizabeth Ave. All these years later he's till caught up in the Ford Vs. Chevy debate. Let it go Pops!

  • We live in Rahway, NJ and my Dad still goes to this strip. He recognizes one of the Fords in the footgae as someone who lived on Elizabeth Ave. He's still all caught up in the Ford Vs. Chevy debate of 50 years ago.

  • Man...whatta clip!

This just nails it for me, music & all...I run a '55 Chevy Station wagon nostalgia car in Southern California & would have LOVED to have ran at Island back then!

  • Awesome! Too bad that there are no sounds, due to technical limits of 8mm films. But the music fits great to the clip, since it's from the same era.

  • Oh man,i love the old days of drag racing,i really miss going to the track to smell the rubber and the fumes, lol. Was better back then,at least there wasnt a bunch of dime-a-dozen econo boxes fart piping around.

  • amen to that!

  • this video is really awesome... you don't ever see these cars today

  • If you can, go to the National Hot Rod Reunion in Columbus, OH or the California Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield...you will!

  • I never get tired of seeing this video!

The good news is hot rodding is making a very big comeback today.

  • I LIKE IT.

  • what song is this???

  • Drag City by Jan and Dean ,then Shut Down by the Beach Boys.

  • Great filf! The blue dragster appears to be the Kulp-Nocentino-Van "Outlaw" out of Bristol PA. If so, I believe the engine and chassis were built by Jack Kulp not Dragmaster.

  • LOSE the music! Let's hear the engines!

  • It was a silent film, so no engine sounds. Sorry.

  • Oops! Right, I've been spoiled by the digital age.

  • @jdizzle61 You nailed it with the songs you picked...Great Job! :-D

  • awesome. i go there often, its cool to see how its changed in 45 years

  • Great film! You have some rare footage of a Dragmaster dragster- the blue 'slingshot' dragster uses a custom frame/chassis from Dode Martin and Jim Nelson-the dragmasters. (see the current issue of Rodders Journal for more about them.) I just interviewed them last week for a tv/film project-(www.vintageventuremedia.com) They would enjoy seeing this great old footage! Thanks for sharing!

  • I like it...alot!

  • fantastic! nice choice of soundtrack too.

  • Great find. Thx!

  • Glad to put it up for you. Did you catch the awesome burnout from the white '59 Ford?

  • Yes I did. Is there a story behind that particular car?
