  • What guitar is the lead singer playing?

  • Keyboardist is surrounded by some of the best gear ever made...and he not only knows how to play great,he uses it all!

  • So they had 16 members over the years with Aussies included. Get over the emotional attachment all. It's a mix of different nationalities full stop. Mainly this mainly that, meh...16 members. God bless Australians & New Zealanders everywhere...we're in this together guys & girls!

  • The lead singer is missing a tooth. 3:10

  • In an age where five keyboards, and a keyboard solo, were seen as cool.

  • First time I heard them was on a live local radio broadcast on K-97 from the Riviera Rock Room in Edmonton, Alberta. Canada. Guessing about 1980. Great era, great times! Did get to see them live at a later date at the Edmonton Coliseum, which now is known as Rexall Place.

  • Wow. Talk about memories coming back. Great tune, I always liked it, even though they weren't popular here in Italy

  • Gidaey.

  • the guy announcing group was on mayberry r.f.d...know what i mean?

  • kool never knew they were on this show i used to watch it sometimes.....the enz!!!!

  • great performance. rare video, a good one. the lead singer's missing a tooth. too bad they didn't have dental implants back then.

  • In New Zealand they're known as splut eenz

  • tres cool Enz.

  • FRIDAYS was a great show!!

  • Man this song takes me back to my youth!!!A great Blast From The Past!!!!

  • I like it, but what's with the creepy eyes? Staring right into the camera?

  • whos the host who introduces them?

  • Always loved this song, they used to show the video in the early days of MTV. Plus I think that is Kramer on tambourine, lol.

  • Col. Saunders would have been proud!

  • An Australian new wave group dressed like a 1950's country and western band. People took more chances back in the eighties.

  • @tomthefunky New Zealand Band

  • @tomthefunky technically i think the look is more 1960's buck owens/bakersfield but i digress.

  • @tomthefunky New Zealand to be exact.

  • @tomthefunky Kiwi's actually.

  • @tomthefunky ...

    Their New Zealand...

  • @tomthefunky New Zealand*

  • @tomthefunky Split Enz were a 70's band and this "look" is tame compared to their earlier looks.

  • @tomthefunky I believe you mean to say "New Zealand", not "Australian".

  • this song was the first ever Mushroom Records 7" i bought from Brashes in Forest Hill, Melb. i was 8 years old and loved this track …still do!

  • Seasons been at the wine

  • Is he the fella that sang fourvseans in one day

  • @GeraldineMcK - Yes (if you mean 'Four Seasons In One Day') - this is effectively the same band as Crowded House.

  • Look at rayner's rig, crickey he was a lucky duck for 1980! like rik wakemanesque!

  • My sister and I were big fans on Split Enz growing up in the early 1980's. Problem is, you can't find too many of their CDs anymore. It's good to see Neil and Tim Finn still playing together after all these years.

By the way, "Fridays" wasn't that great a show but their musical taste was impeccable.

  • @poughkeepsiejohn1 Really cuz amazon got tons of their, kind of cheap 2. i bought alot from there, try it out. as for fridays yea they sucked but the music was new wave friendly, like an early version of MTV.

  • This show (Fridays) changed my musical taste forever. I still remember watching this performance with Neil singing. It solidified my near obsession with them for 30 years now. I was 12 when I first saw them; I still love Neil.<3

  • Neils playing anice yamaha SG1820.

  • Awesome. Nostalgic. Dig the Col. Sanders dudz. Was that Will Ferrell in his "more cow bell!" costume in the audience at the very end (lol).

  • absolutley love this song, still play it at parties and jukeboxes wherever i go

  • Ahhhh, this was my favorite Split Enz song back in the day.... Thanks for uploading :) :) :)

  • The studio version of this sounds like The Cars.

  • Love Neil's moves at 1:40 ;'

  • @cgarbiano yeah real 80's move

  • @cgarbiano yeah a icoon from the 80's

  • @cgarbiano and the looks at 2.12

  • love the way they end thia immense version of this superb track on a very.... rush, note!

  • Greg Brady on drums.

  • @125jlm ha! funny

  • The sound seen not like yesterdag but the day before that. Hearded on the radio today and look it up on the tube. Where is the make up guys?

  • Look how young and fresh faced they all look. ha ha and those outfits...

    great song, great band.

  • Who was the man doing the intro. i remember him as being quite funny but that show has been off the air since the early 1980s.

  • @ThemanfromZambodia I think it was Jack Burns doing the intro. The guy who chased Andy Kauffman around trying to kill him on live TV when Kauffman screwed up one of the scripts on purpose.

  • Stan Laurel on tambourine.

  • great songs, fantastic performers = greatness.....

  • and the keyboard guy has a roland space echo!

  • I remember this well because it was the very first time I ever heard or saw Split Enz. I've been an avid follower of anything Finn ever since. I've enjoyed aging with these guys.

  • Split Enz/Crowded House...........yesssss

  • I had this on cassette in college, played it over and over and over and over and over and over and.............................

  • Keys = Piano, Octave CAT, CS-80, Prophet-5. Very nice!

  • @miamigroove The Octave Cat. A very underated synth. 2 Osc plus 2 sub Osc. Very big sound indeed.

  • i still come back to this video after seeing CH live and meeting Neil and the band because this is their roots, this is where CH started even though they were still Split Enz. any music Neil does is amazing, and no one can touch or top it, imo!

  • Loving the edgey-ness of this live recording...

  • Great band and a great show! Thanks for posting this, this show was never syndicated and sadly never has seen a DVD re-release. They had the most brilliant musical guests:The Jam, The Boomtown Rats, Graham Parker, The Clash, Etc...This takes me back to being 14 in my parent's living room!

  • classic song, classic version... now i'm rigid - and wanting more!

  • @thepofmeister - ooh, ps - love the chorus on the lead/rythmn guitar... and the non recorded version extras on the guitar front! they just don't write 'em like this anymore. guitarists! let's bring the chorus back! yay!!!

  • drummer is out of uniform!!

    Classic. Thanks for posting.

  • Drummer is out of uniform lol

and just WHY does the singer think he's a badass??? bwahahaha!!

  • @bs1174 because the singer IS a badass! Neil Finn is an amazing lyricist, singer and guitarist. anyone who says different doesn't know what good music is, imnsho.

  • nice to see Brian Clough guest starring on the cymbels..!!!!!!!!!

  • @DAzbodi06 I think you`ll find thats a tamborine Brians playing. Don`t remember seeing him with it at Derby County, he must have lost it !

  • Great great great song!!!

  • The keyboards in this song make me feel mental love this song!

  • Notice of course the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 keyboard that produces the "wowing and meowing" keyboard part in the verses. I used to use a Prophet 600 which could also produce that exact tone. When I watched this clip it really took me back to the days of analog and analog/digital synths, before the Yamaha DX-7. Lots of programming on the fly live. Fun times.

  • Listen for great music like this on a new radio station called "OffTheCharts" - featuring 70's (and some 80's) lost hits and chart wonders!

Go to Live365.com, type OFFTHECHARTS in the Search box and click on the station logo. The audio stream should begin. Become a VIP member and listen commercial free!

This song will be fearured on our first show beginning November 8.

    Thanks for posting this song!

  • Eddy Rayner is one awesome keyboard player.

  • @camc23 Eddie has been the real keeper of the Enz flame for some time. He supervised and produced the last definitive remasters of the band's catalog.

  • My favorite new old song!

  • Neil is HOT!

  • f***ing brilliant! best version!

  • Neil is so cute in this! He was my very first celebrity crush :)

  • @SuperRondalee mine too!! i was 12 y.o. when i first saw him on Solid Gold back in 1980 (Harrison Ford followed next haha). i finally got to meet him a few months ago. he can be so funny on stage, bantering back and forth with Nick Seymour, and they are all such wonderful gentlemen off stage.

  • one of the best live vids i have seen,,,just awsum

  • I love "schneider" the MC.

  • bill murray with a tambourine

  • Neil finn-Genius!!! man they sound as good live as they do on the album, great band nzeds finest.

  • Love this track, very contemporary. Chrysalis recording artists along with U F O!

  • That's one hell of a keyboard set-up..... a collector's dream today!

  • @AnalogX1 bassplayer shows his taste with American Handcrafted BC Rich Mockingbird as well. Always good to see people playing the USA BCRs

  • VITAMIN C DID THIS SONG AND IT ROCKS TOO

  • I Remember " FRIDAY'S it was ABC's Version of NBC's Saturday Night Live. It only Lasted for 3 Season from 1980 to 1982. it was the Show that First Introduced Me to Michael Richards before he went on to do Jerry Seinfeld as Cosmo Kramer.

  • @perpetual61 Who forgets Melenie Chartoff, however, she remains etched in my brain as HOT ness

  • Split Endz had a great laser etched record.

I had the album, it was fantastic.

  • Why th Colonel Sanders tie?

  • After watching both Split Enz and Crowded House videos , i have come to the conclusion that the Finn Brothers are very talented and seem to choose very talented people for their bands .

  • @Tekton62 I saw crowded house as a bit of a non-fan, and was mightily impressed!

  • Wow , I would love to see these guys live if they ever come to D/FW ,Texas area. I would drive to Austin to see them!

  • to me, THIS SONG started new wave music, not Blondie's Heart of Glass~ love this song~

  • @DNRvideos what about the cars?

  • @shockmastershocksu the cars were more like cheap trick, to me....but thy are definitely new wave as well...Lets Go, Best Friends Girl, et

  • I was wrong about the tambourine.

  • neil looks about 14 here

  • i may have asked this before, but what year did this episode play on T.V.? it is obviously before the Solid Gold performance in 1980, and if so before the MTV video as well. i love this! true Finn bros. entertainment!

  • You can hear the tamborine before it moves. I think they may be playing to a soundtrack also.

  • @thegonz9 that is possible because the sound isnt perfectly synced to the video...not to mention it takes time for sound to travel thru all the circuitry.....please if you dont know what u are talking about.......

  • he's freaky as

  • Thanks Split Enz! This tune helped me get my first stinky finger 30 years ago!

  • Certainly I would not complaine about there appearance . Looks good . However , I can't help thinking that they look like something from the late 1960's . Not that there is anything wrong with that .

  • Is anybody else getting sort of an Everly Brothers type of vibe from this?

  • Cool song. I remember watching this on t.v. when I was suppose to be asleep.

  • Double Happy was the B-side to I Got You, still have the 45'RPM record...

  • Split Enz just had a bit of misfortune like Spinal Tap did.

Spinal Taps drummers kept mysteriously exploding.

Split Enz's lead singers mysteriously kept losing a tooth.

Nothing more to the story than that.

  • i wonder if Neil wonders why folks are so intensely curious about his early missing tooth! LOL for me, it was just a part of the late Enz, early Crowded House, and the curiousity gets to me as to when he got it fixed. wish he hadn't cux it was really cute!

  • @ramadarose41 just triyng to make funny comments , dont get it too seriosly

  • did he had the tooth missing or was just make up?

  • there are a few other early videos of him without that tooth, and i thought it was incredibly sexy! LOL i wonder when or if he had it replaced.

  • luv the pastel suits

  • song of the year 1980 on the aria charts. this song summs up 1980 life in melbourne. it was released on australia day. tuesday 26/1/1980.

  • Great peformance!! Also Fridays blew the doors off SNL back then...too bad it did not stick around. Michael Richards, Melanie Chartoff, etc. made their debut on this show!

  • that keyboard player was shit hot and a lucky bastard to have that gear in 1980!

This song sounds just as good live as on record. Split enz where great.

  • @youboob1981 More than shit hot-- Super Shit Hot Awesome

  • @youboob1981 you need to get the remastered albums!! Eddie Raynor the keyboardist did the remastering...amazing!!!!!!

  • @FranzifromMulberrys Thanks for the info I will have to track those down.

  • @youboob1981 If I remember right according to the liner notes on History their greatest hits compilation History Never Repeats, Split Enz was living at poverty level around this time.

  • @chowyunpat RADIO NZ ENZOLOGY WEB CAST SAYS YEA TOO THE POVERTY LEVEL. their lp bfore bombed and this was there 2nd chance w/dave tickle producing. label dropped em twice mush. records gave up,last ditch w/ chyrsalis. tru clours was there make or break chance. they made it yet strangely crumbled afta, weird.

  • @youboob1981 totally agree

  • What a great sounding live performance!

  • nice

  • Is that a Yamaha CS-60?!?!! :o)

  • no CS 80 :-)

  • @perscaven even BETTER! I wish I had 20 grand to snag my own nowadays!

  • Do you know Arturia cs80v?

  • @perscaven I believe Arturia is a company that has remade some of these old analog synths in software form, instability and all

  • i use cs80v really good virtual synth

  • What a fantastic live version of a great song! I had such a crush on Neil Finn...and he's still hot hot hot! Fridays was a second-rate SNL rip-off but they had some awesome musical performances:)

  • this was the first song i ever heard of theirs, and it was on Solid Gold (I think); i don't remember "Fridays" at all. i can't find any reference to them being on SG at all, but that's where me and my li'l sis remember seeing Neil first. and OY YES, he was and still IS HOT. he'll always be extremely handsome to me.... even if he did finally fix that lost tooth... mmmmmmmm!

  • pastels and bushie eyebrows. Welcome to the early eighties.

  • great song, great memories, thanks for posting :)

  • One of the most colorfully dressed bands around. They look like human popsicles.

  • Anyone know where I can get a good tab for this song? Also anyone know the gear he's using? Sounds like a small amount of delay and slightly crunchy overdriven

  • I'd forgotten how cute Neil was back then.

  • Ever hear of INXS????

  • by far the best aussie/nz band or the 80s/90s

  • *swoon* Neil's 'bedroom' eyes 2:15 to 2:20.

  • Neil Finn went on to form Crowded House.

  • What an amazing keyboard player for a rock band.

  • Great performance. I agree with thegonz9, the audience obviously didn't realise or appreciate just what they were watching.

  • thats the 80,s for you,love the music !!!!

  • cool.

  • It's a shame "Fridays" hasn't come out on DVD. They had some amazing musical guests:Split Enz, the Clash, The Jam, The Boomtown Rats, The Pretenders, Devo, Graham Parker and the Rumor etc

  • The studio audience seemed slightly subdued. Didn't they recognize how lucky they were?

  • i noticed this too, and it is noticeable in a couple of other live videos (live vid of One Step Ahead for one) . but never in MTV vids or in more recent vids. that missing tooth has always been kinda sexy to me! lol he was such a cutie back then, and had grown into a very good looking man, imo.

  • I've been a fan of their's since this song was out...have seen probably every video they've ever put out...and this is the first footage I've ever noticed that Neil was missing a tooth on his right upper side! I've looked at other video since first seeing this and noticed it was missing all along! Any idea when he got it fixed? Just curious...

  • sad how there no new bands to fill the spaces

  • i love how he just eye fucks the camera

  • pearl jam toca este cover ?

  • i loved this look, the string ties were cool too, Enz and Spandau Ballet wore them. the pop synth sound really defined new wave...it was great bein' there!

  • Beautiful!

  • klassik footage from a old show.

  • the man is a world class talent...

  • great song...saw Neil Finn in Auckland New Zealand a few years ago..wish I had gone up to him and said hello now..the man is a w.

  • "Friday's" was a good show that didn't last very long. They had good musical guests and a pretty good cast. One of the regular players was Michael Richards of Kramer / Seinfeld / racist rant fame.

  • I just love the colorful suits. Great song!

  • Those are the same costumes they wore on their appearance on TOTP.

  • my fave split enz song

  • WHAT YEAR WAS THIS?

  • 1980.

  • Comment removed

  • What a long and wonderful career these guys have enjoyed- One the few bands I've always wanted to see live, They don't get out on tour too much.

  • What a showman Neil Finn is. Saw them at "Enz with a bang" Awesome!!!

  • Amazing! Thank you for posting. :)
