Spanish speakers are the last people on the earth to accuse others of killing other languages. For example, when Spanish colonized Mexico, they forced natives to adopt Spanish. Ultimately, many Mexicans' native languages were not preserved by Spanish. Instead, they're destroyed. The same thing applies to many countries in South America today. The natives living there did not speak Spanish. But Spanish colonists and immigrants dominated and controlled the regions. They ENFORCED Spanish.
@ttiiyy On the other hand, americans (people on America, not the continent, no matter if they descend from spanish or english colonizers) are the people who knows more about ethnocide. Look at Bolivia right now, they have an aymara president, a native ethinc group, look at Paraguay, where 4 out of 5 people still speak guarani, the native language. This is exactly the point, the colonization is bad, please, United States, learn about history, killing cultures is wrong.
@ttiiyy sorry, when I said americans, i meant people ON the continent, not the country (there's not such thing as a country named America, it's United States)
@eskorbutin89 It does not change my original point. I use the term US and US citizens quite often as well. So I'm not confused.
Spanish are SHAMELESS people with double standards. That's all. You people destroyed native Americans own culture and their own languages. So stop trashing the US and all this nonsense colonization/imperialism bullshit.
Before Spanish arrived at today's Mexico or most parts of South America, NOBODY spoke Spanish. They had their own cultures.
@ttiiyy you have no point at all, First: MY people did absolutely nothing, since most nowadays americans are descendants of immigrants that came AFTER the various american independences. So, MY people did nothing, blame Spain if you want to, and by the way, Colombus (Colón) was Italian, big part of his crew too. Second: most native american languages are still alive, spoken natively, even by no-descendants-from-native people. Third: The US are the only country in America that are, today, doing a
language. So, I can only imagine that the predictions on this video are going to be true, if US people/government (i refuse to call them americans) continue with cultural colonisation. Tenemos que aprender a ver nuestras diferencias como algo positivo, en vez de verlas como un impedimento para relacionarnos, para así, poder mantener nuestras identidades y nuestras independencias nacionales. Saludos desde Argentina, greetings from Argentina!
although simpler to write/read, every language has it's differences, more complex in some points, simpler in others, there's no point whatsoever on discussing what language is easier, or more difficult. ah and by the way, even if all indians study english there can't be 1,5 billion indians studying english 'cause there are barely 1.1 billion indians in the world, same with chinese, there are 1.3 billion HAN chinese people; and most of them are monolingual since mandarin is by far the mos spoken
@eskorbutin89 What are you talking about? I know, for a fact, that more and more rich Chinese parents send their children to private schools where many classes are taught in English. The Chinese government does value English education. Don't speak for us Chinese. Thank you.
@ttiiyy I'm telling you, there are no 1.5 billiion chinese people learning english, because there are not 1.5 billion chinese people at all. And I imagine that not every chinese person studies english, you said it "more and more RICH chinese parents".. not every chinese is rich. I'm not talking for the chinese, I'm talking about them, about my interpretation of available information.
english has became the lingua franca worldwide because of cultural penetration (music, movies, internet), if we need to use an international auxiliar language, I suggest to use a culturally neutral one, like esperanto or lojban. we need to preserve the different languages in order to preserve different cultures and nationalities, imposing english is tied to imposing british/US culture, it's ethnocide, the killing of a people. English is certainly more complex than chinese on grammar and syntax
I am a native English speaker and all of you who are not, shine my shoes. I hope you understand (respectfully , if that is possible) You pay me to teach you even though I can't. I make my living as an ESL/EFL teacher. My wealth is my language. You lose if you hide, you lose if you try to join in. What else can you do? My natural advantage is as good as ever and it doesn't matter how many Indians work call centers. I take my power for granted. It's an insult but it is real. I'm sorry.
I find it absurd that none of the big English speaking countries have made English their official language. It is not even the official language in England!! Serious mistake. Imagine going to say Mexico for example and asking the Mexicans to provide official documents in English. Fat chance. So whats good for them should be good for English speakers. Make English the official langague.
Coming from a German/British american living in AZ that has learned Spanish, Spanish and English should be combined, and no it isn't Esperanto for the americas, U.K., Canada, and Australia. While China, Japan, and Korea recombine the chinese roots. India and the Southeastern Countries combine their languages. Then Africa should combine all of their native non-european languages. Then finally a new easy to learn and pronounce language be used for trade and travel. Just my idea.
@sinceritus Funny idea, but combining languages it is hardly feasible 1) without the abandonment of writing (whichs slows down the evolution of a language) and 2) without an authoritarian body, popular or not, who'd then fixate standard rules: like Kemal who imposed the Latin alphabet for Turkish ; the long history of simplification of the Chinese characters by the rulers ; or the worldwide (natural?) tendency to extinguish 'dialects' . If you want to do it quickly, go directly to part 2.
@sinceritus English is already a combination of many languages, and every culture is contributing words to the English language everyday, eg Dim sum, sushi, etc
English is unique because it's the only language that absorbs all others and is still evolving.
hahaha I see lots of Prophets here , I imagine a roman soldier saying, 2000 years ago, "LATIN IS THE LANGUAGE OF THE FUTURE, If you wanna learn the finest arts , u ve got to learn latin, if u wanna talk to god, uve got to learn language, if u wanna belong to this beautiful and eternal empire, UVE GOT TO LEARN LATIN"
Esperanto will be the universal language of the future....any peole from any country in the world can in few months learne the language and is a neutral language do not belong to any country or culturer respecting all people.
@ML678v I am a native English speaker and a dedicated English language teacher (and speaker of several other languages), but believe that the world needs to accept Esperanto as the international language. It's a great choice because of its neutrality and ease of learning.
I do, however, think in the near future, we will not see a change from English as the world language. This video makes English sound extremely imperialistic. Sometimes I even feel imperialistic teaching English abroad...
@Asiats1 I can't speak for India, but as a person who holds a degree in Chinese Studies, is a fluent Chinese speaker, and has lived in China, I can tell you that Esperanto is more widely promoted in China than it is in the US. Several major universities offer Esperanto courses and a higher percentage of my Chinese friends than American friends are knowledgeable about Esperanto. Again, Esperanto is much easier to learn than English no matter how you cut it, no matter what your first language is.
What I'll say is this: Without the English language being as it is now you wouldn't have Tiger Woods, Steven Seagal, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenneggar, and Chuck Norris, or the Italian American Gentlemen's Society existential extension's worth of those guys from the Jersey Shore.
@bordkrijt Well, I guess some people have their own reasons for particular peeves against certain actors schticks. Then again, someone could say likewise for your as close as can be homeland brethren in Jean-Claude Van Damm'ers.
As for me, I'm a fan of those guys and the guy from Brussels as I've sort of listed out.
English is fine. But from where I come from, English is a foreign language. Our main language is Hawaiian. But it was banned when America invaded my country. Even though the lifted the banned, no one spekes it no more! One day when our country is independent, our native language will be spoken more often just like English.
@DeltaEagle7700 . . . You tell that to the rest of the Aztecs, Incas, Olmecs, Mayans, etc. in Mexico. From your perspective they just don't seem to give a damn... IF THEY ARE ANY.
Supposedly, the Founding Fathers of the U.S. considered adopting both Hebrew & German as their new language. I don't know if these stories are true, but I hear them often. Wouldn't it have been funny if they adopted Hebrew. & this isn't so absurd either. Preachers were very promenant in the founding, they all naturally learn Hebrew. Harvard used to hold their commencement in totally in Hebrew.
@angelignacioalvarez Stop being a piche pendejo and get off of the thirst for West/Eastern Gothic cock that your last name is said to be etymologically based of off ANGELITA.
Last time I went to Beijing half the road signs there were in English. What language will a Chinese man and Indian man use to speak to each other? What language will a Japanese man and Brazilian man speak to each other? What language will a German use to speak to an Italian? That's right, English!
English is the ONLY language that will carry humankind into the future. Supported by 1.5 Billion Indians and 1.3 Billion Chinese, English will be the language that unites the World's society. It's the language of science E=mc2, chemical and maths formulaes, it can abbreviate, it can arrange things in alphabetical order. Want to really learn computers and programming? Then you've got to learn English! It's the most sophisticated language in the world with 1+ Million words and growing by the day
'1.5 billion' indians and 1.3 billion chinese do not speak English and they most likely never will. English may be the language of most scientific journals, but that is changing. It can abbreviate— as can every other language on the planet. It can arrange things in alphabetical order— as can every other alphabetical language (and non-alphabetical languages have their own systems, too_. You DON'T need to learn English to learn about computers and programming.
@thisusernameistaken2 It is estimated that by 2020, 75% of the World Population can speak English up from 50% today. What language do u want to speak.. Arabic? LOL I don't see us Chinese learning Arabic.
@Asiats1 Actually I think the best language to be the international language would be Esperanto, but since we can't always get what we want, I'll be realistic... Probably there never will be an 'international language', and the future will be a multilingual world where different people will speak different combinations of Mandarin, English, Spanish and maybe other languages such as French, Hindi, Portuguese...
@Asiats1 "It's the language of science E=mc2, chemical and maths formulaes[sic]"
Actually, those fields use Latin and Greek terms a lot.
"It's the most sophisticated language in the world with 1+ Million words and growing by the day"
Just because it has a lot of words, that doesn't mean it's sophisticated. In fact, most of the English I read on the internet is appallingly simplistic and weak.
I think Asian languages have a large chance of taking over the position of Lingua Franca.
@doom032 Latin and Greek terms has evolved into English. The beauty of English is that it absorbs from cultures all around the world. We are all contributing to the English language every day. Unfortunately for Asian languages, it is character based, so it's severley limited and outdated. It's like trying to use analoge in today's digital world. Even among Asian nations, they use English to communicate to each other. Eg a Japanese will speak English with a Chinese person... vice versa.
@Sassymui8 . . . I'm thinking speaking English lessens the tooth and nail approach from happening between you guys going from how heated the history has been between not just Japan and China but includingly Korea as well.
So much for Tri-Countries getting overshadowing rep over the other Asian countries.
@Sassymui8 . . . Er, IMO somewhat and somewhat not.
Of course, India can through it's weight around, no doubt - but when I say Tri-Countries as in the main three -(you'd know what I mean in that of course) I say that since all of you guys in that trifecta couldn't virtually be told apart if ALL THREE of you were silent at the same time.
@doom032 Are you meaning that the new holder of language dominance takes on the name of the language that was dominant before it as in lingua LATIN for French from way back when for a while?
@Asiats1 No! look at latin it had the same qualities you mentined there, and is no longer in use, like it or not, english will become a dead language.
The English language is a curse that breeds arrogance. I myself am British and am regulalry disappointed that other countries seem to concern themselves so much with learning English that they neglect their native language and culture. In many Asian countries students must now use their 'English' name rather than the name given to them by their parents. It's absurd! They are not interested to know that most common 'English' names are not even 'English' at all, including my own.
@themustardbaron I want to thank you very much for your post. I love my Dutch native language first and English second, as the latter carries fond memories for me. Many visits to Ireland. A lady English teacher who was so sweet. I have joined an association that is dedicated to the defense of the Dutch language. What is going on here is shocking. Just an example from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport: all signs are in English only! I hate such mis-use of the English language.
@hanmaenen Thanks for the feedback. I find it ridiculous that Schipol Airport has signs only in English. If I was in the Netherlands, I would want to feel like I was in the Netherlands, not some generic airport somewhere in the world. This kind of action will not only impede the growth of the Dutch language, but will accelerate the laziness of English speakers. I hope that the Dutch authorities take note of your complaint.
You have no concept of the history of English. It was not a mistake (a concept of conscious thought)- it was a merger and evolution baked through time, and flavoured by invasion and influence.
@usespanner1 English is the International language of commerce. Even The Chinese the biggest population on the planet learn English. English won't be overtaken as the dominant language.
The cycle continues. When the Africans learn Chinese and mirror the Chinese education system and China becomes more affluent, Chinese call center jobs, programming jobs, etc. will be exported to Mandarin-speaking Africa just like the jobs that require English are being exported to India now.
I don't think so. China is just one country, think about India.
More and more people study English in this country,
It will be impossible to study more and more languges as so much developing country will be the part of international trade (Indonesia,Vietnam,Thailand,Poland etc).
-So tell me is it "center" or "centre" ? What about "helicopter" ? in UK english its not spelled "helicoptre". So, why do British spell "centre" ?
.
-Also, is it "criticize" or "criticise" ? What about "praise" and "exercise" ? in US english its not spelled "praize" and "exercize". So, why do Americans spell "criticize" ?
.
Which kind of English should be the international language ?
English should not be a global language since it is very flawed instead we need to create a phonetic language (a language that is spoken as it is written unlike English) and that is simple to speak read and write.
Moreover, there were movements and leaders, who were fighting for the pure english language. They called the language itself "tongue" or they called marriage "wedlock".The present condition of the english language is the victory of english snobism.
Why are all of you so hostile to the English language? Before they took over the Latin and French words, they had their own words for everything. For example the spasm has a germanic equivalent, the cramp, and so forth.
English is British imperialism. The English (through the British Empire) enforced all their culture on its colonies. English is a foreign language to Americans that they speak everyday. They dont speak their native language. Thats British imperialism folks.
@Unknownkid2. Same here! Our language was banned! The vast majority of us present generations Hawaiians don't know how to speak the Hawaiian language because it could not be passed down! So technically, you and me is speaking a foregin language.
@DeltaEagle7700 It sucks a lot for Hawaii. At least in Puerto Rico we learn Spanish as our first tongue and about 5% of the population speaks English fluently. Do you speak Hawaiian?
@Unknownkid2. Sadly, not much. I only speak a few, but not much in conversation. 98% of the present generation Hawaiians speak English. Only 2% or less speak the Hawaiian language. Its slowly sliping away.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@fiofodiveia Dumb enough? Everyone struggles to learn a language. People don't just wake up speaking a language that they never used before. Educate yourself because that was not an educated comment. Plus, American culture isn't exclusively the United States. It includes the other countries in America. Also, the most spoken language in America is Spanish.
@fiofodiveia Those are incredibly harsh words, and untrue ones at that. English is just as hard to learn most other European languages, the only thing that distinguishes it from the others is that you are bombarded with the language on a daily basis. That's why people learn it quickly.
@fiofodiveia while english is definitely the language of the world's future, it's actually one of the most inconsistent and confusing languages in the world to learn.
@Spamscript English is actually the hardest language to learn. This is because of all the words that sound the same but mean different things, being spelled the same and meaning different things. There are so many rules, and now so many slang words.
@Spamscript Well there are Germanic languages like German, Swedish and English which sound very same, but have you ever heard Finnish? It's so different. there's no any single same sounding word. Not even very simple old words like "stone, sun, sand, wood, spear, arrow, child" In Finnish words are very different. Btw Finnish is "Finno-ugric" language but we don't even use so much F letter. Finnish and Finland should actually be called "Suomi"
@Spamscript & @b4igetu There's no 'hardest language to learn.' The difficulty of learning other languages is solely dependent on your native tongue. Homophones are not a feature only of English; English speakers struggle with Chinese words that differ only in tone. The only thing that makes learning other languages difficult is how different they are from your native tongue. I have a feeling you'd find Basque more difficult than Mandarin.
@b4igetu Hum, you think english is hard? I found it very easy to learn, and i'm not even paying to learn it. There are many more languages out there that are 10 times more difficult, with a lot more rules and confusing spelling. Trust me, English is a (relatively) easy language.
time to start learning mandarin!

Just my idea.
sinceritus 11 months ago
@sinceritus Funny idea, but combining languages it is hardly feasible 1) without the abandonment of writing (whichs slows down the evolution of a language) and 2) without an authoritarian body, popular or not, who'd then fixate standard rules: like Kemal who imposed the Latin alphabet for Turkish ; the long history of simplification of the Chinese characters by the rulers ; or the worldwide (natural?) tendency to extinguish 'dialects' . If you want to do it quickly, go directly to part 2.
Monkeyshouts 11 months ago
@sinceritus English is already a combination of many languages, and every culture is contributing words to the English language everyday, eg Dim sum, sushi, etc
English is unique because it's the only language that absorbs all others and is still evolving.

ML678v 11 months ago
@ML678v I am a native English speaker and a dedicated English language teacher (and speaker of several other languages), but believe that the world needs to accept Esperanto as the international language. It's a great choice because of its neutrality and ease of learning.
I do, however, think in the near future, we will not see a change from English as the world language. This video makes English sound extremely imperialistic. Sometimes I even feel imperialistic teaching English abroad...
BillA1016 10 months ago
@BillA1016 "needs to accept Esperanto as the international language." Tell that to the Indians and Chinese LOL
Asiats1 10 months ago
@Asiats1 I can't speak for India, but as a person who holds a degree in Chinese Studies, is a fluent Chinese speaker, and has lived in China, I can tell you that Esperanto is more widely promoted in China than it is in the US. Several major universities offer Esperanto courses and a higher percentage of my Chinese friends than American friends are knowledgeable about Esperanto. Again, Esperanto is much easier to learn than English no matter how you cut it, no matter what your first language is.

English is fine. But from where I come from, English is a foreign language. Our main language is Hawaiian. But it was banned when America invaded my country.

Asiats1 1 year ago
English is the ONLY language that will carry humankind into the future. Supported by 1.5 Billion Indians and 1.3 Billion Chinese, English will be the language that unites the World's society. It's the language of science E=mc2, chemical and maths formulaes, it can abbreviate, it can arrange things in alphabetical order. Want to really learn computers and programming? Then you've got to learn English! It's the most sophisticated language in the world with 1+ Million words and growing by the day
Asiats1 1 year ago 16
@Asiats1 Wait, why are 1.3 billion Chinese going to have to use English in the first place?
PatchesRips 1 year ago
@Asiats1 That's complete bullshit.

I think Asian languages have a large chance of taking over the position of Lingua Franca.
doom032 1 year ago
@doom032 Latin and Greek terms has evolved into English. The beauty of English is that it absorbs from cultures all around the world. We are all contributing to the English language every day. Unfortunately for Asian languages, it is character based, so it's severley limited and outdated. It's like trying to use analoge in today's digital world. Even among Asian nations, they use English to communicate to each other. Eg a Japanese will speak English with a Chinese person... vice versa.

Just an example from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport: all signs are in English only! I hate such mis-use of the English language.

@hanmaenen Thanks for the feedback. I find it ridiculous that Schipol Airport has signs only in English. If I was in the Netherlands, I would want to feel like I was in the Netherlands, not some generic airport somewhere in the world. isokessu 1 year ago
