As sonnycrane said, the guy in 12 & 17 looks like Neil Young, but it's Joe Tate from New Salvation Army Banned. He now plays ukelele & sings at the No Name Bar in Sausalito, CA. 19 is Byrds David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and it must be Michael Clarke on drums, also shown in closeup in #20, tho I'm not positive about that, as he looks different with short hair. He was their drummer at this time, tho.
3: the Byrds, 7: Jorma Kaukonen, 8: Paul Kantner, 6: Grace Slick, 12 & 17 sure looks a bit like Neil Young but actually he's a member of the Salvation just like thesyd1975 mentioned. At least 9 & 11 are also from Salvation (maybe still under the name "New Salvation Army Banned" at that point.) 16: Grace Slick & David Crosby in the middle. 18 - 20 Byrds.
The grey matter must be failing me. I didn't recognize very many of these musicians. Maybe, I need stronger eyeglasses :-)! It's odd somehow, since I grew up with this music. However, they hailed from a time when music mattered the most, and it had something to say other than, "get high -- everybody get high!" People were more pro-active back then. We need to catch their spirit, once more and reorganize The Occupy Movement in 2012. Hope, Light, Music, and Love to all in 2012.
@sarjane62 - I found out that photo #4 is The Lamp of Childhood (at 0:22 to 0:28.) I sought out John York, since I remembered his name from the band. He wrote me a message, in which he identifies the band members shown in the photo. I've checked on his web site and he's still a wonderful musician. I believe he has recently been touring with Barry McGuire. I'll post his message.
@sarjane62 - Here's the message from John York: > Thanks for the clip...How wonderful. > The members of Lamp of Childhood in the photo are > Marty Tryon, Mic Takamatsu and Gabriel Meckler who > produced the recordings. I remember the gig. I was > next in line to the right....also not shown was Fred > Olson. We borrowed a drummer who used legs from a table > as drum sticks. He was good. > The Lamp was a good band. Everyone sang and the songs were > strong and beautiful.
@ahniditab - At 0:21, I think it's Lamp of Childhood. They performed both days. They followed The Doors the first day and The Fifth Dimension the second day. I think the guy to the left is Marty Tryon. In the center may be John York, who later was with The Byrds for a short time. There's a bit of info if you search the internet. The man on the right I can't identify, but did find that they often used a substitute for their "studio only" keyboardist Gabriel Mekler.
@anitashelby - This song is lovely, and the singer has a beautiful voice. What song is it and who is the singer? Please let me know as I would like to hear more of her. Thanks. Also, thanks to sarjane62 for uploading these photos. A wonderful piece of history.
@anitashelby - I just noticed that the singer is identified as Joan Baez, under "23 likes, 0 dislikes." I didn't recognize her voice at all. Thanks for asking around to find out for me. I don't know when this was recorded. She sounds older here than she did in the songs I remember, but I mean that in a good way. It's a beautiful song. I checked on it and it was written by Steve Earle. Thanks again! :)
As an added bonus, I got microfilm for research on my novel of the San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner from May 1967 (from the California State Library) and wouldn't you know, the Chronicle did a week long expose on hippie life as reporter George Gilbert went undercover as one of them. I've read the first two parts (that I printed) and I think it's the most marvelous newspaper journalism I've ever read. Prepare to be shocked by some of the other news items that happened that month (if you get it).
Monday, I got started writing a novel (I haven't done that since my senior year of high school; now it is time) and the story will be about a single working man in his 20's who lives in modern day San Francisco (2009), and is about to begin his paid vacation until he meets a scientist his age. He tells him that he's created the safe way to travel time by using a capsule. The main character takes it and unaware that he'll be sent back to 1967 and hanging with a hippie/hip girl. Sounds great?
Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Festival 1967, one week before the Monterey Festival. A dramatic weekend for Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. On -15 we see Don van Vliet, on -13 Ry Cooder and Jerry Handley on -14 John 'Drumbo' French. John recently wrote an excellent book 'Through the Eyes of Magic', a must read.
I guess, it must be just a few moments before he saw a girl turning into a fish with the bubbles and all, left the 10 ft high stage falling into the manager's arms.
Maybe sarjane62 will show all the pics of this event.....?
I am hoping to put another slide show up soon. I'll shoot for Friday. There are a few shots of a guy who just parachuted into the crowd. Was that at the Fantasy Fair? or anther concert in SF?
Could be, a review reported: "It was a weekend of the Big Blast on Mt. Tam. It was wild sounds and wild colors, SKY-DIVERS and side shows, bizarre hippies from the Haight Ashbury and T-shirted fraternity boys from Cal., young people necking on the sunburnt slopes and children sitting wide-eyed in a real tepee, Hell's Angels munching peanut butter sandwiches at a health bar...there was something for everybody." (Maitland Zane, "Bash on Mt. Tam," San Francisco Chronicle, June 12, 1967)
Thanks for bringing by the "proof sheet" by the Haight. Much discussion flared up after. One of my neighborhood friends, who was on the scene back in the day, was very excited at the description of the pix. He made most of the shows around the area from '66 to '71. We both feel it's Signe Toly Anderson with the Airplane. Can't wait to see what else "developes" ! Always glad to help in the detective work. Still a few mystery frames.
