  • hi champra..i just want to say how much help you've been..its a great tutorial..i'm not quite there with it yet..i have most of the main part and end section..i've not tackled the tapping section yet because i'm unhappy about one thing i'm not doing..do you have any tips on how to get the taps that need to be played while doing the little scale runs?i'm playing all the taps apart from 2 i'm struggling with on the verses.thanks again for taking the time to put this on here.cheers from scotland

  • Dude! I love you! Have been looking for a good tutorial for this song, and this is fu(king amazing! Thanks a lot!

  • thanks a lot

  • hey please man can u tell me the tabs ! because i couldn't understand the finger positions ! and i have a problem from 2:14 to 2:38

  • What tuning does Andy uses in this song?

  • @4menco Baritone guitar. You can play it on standard. It will of course be much higher pitch but sounds nice still, the composition is amazing like that.

  • Is there certain tuning for this song?

  • what's a truss rod?

  • Champ! This is just amazing tutorial... Can you give any tips on finger picking.

  • Dude, thank you very much :D thanx to this vid I can play it fully,

Been stuck on the tapping piece and the piece after that.

Thank you very much, you rock ^^

    Keep it up :-)

    Greetings

  • i want to learn gates of gnomeria

  • @matheusmarinidutra

    me flippin too !!!!!!!!!!

  • how are you supposed to slam on the guitar while playing a note?

  • Comment removed

  • @32ROCKERCHICK32 Try to slam a bass string with your thumb while playing a note with your index or middle finger on the string that needs to be played . Try to do it at a lower speeds at start then go to your normal speed . Also pay attention to the strings in between , usually they have fo be muted , depends on the situation . Hope that helps .

  • @32ROCKERCHICK32 andy mckee knows

  • @32ROCKERCHICK32 Use the force! lol It just takes some good practice and concentration. If you're new to percussive techniques try slowing it WAY down and think about every step, and build up speed over time. Once you've got it it will become almost second nature for you :)

  • I've been trying to learn this song for a couple of days now, and I've got it all pretty well-practiced with the exception of the bridge. I just came across this video, and it's definitely helping me break it down, but I still can't quite make sense of it - is there any piece of insight you could offer me as to how to conquer this beast?

Good job, by the way - AM is no slouch when it comes to writing technical, yet beautiful, pieces.

  • im gonna assume that i shouldnt try to play this without a "baritone" guitar. what is that by the way?

  • @dallasbean36 It works just fine in standard tuning. Ok, so it lacks the bass and some of the 'funk' but I think it sounds ok... Certainly worth learning anyway.

  • your ending is wrong. its the way the tab says, and it makes sense, but andy's tab says differently and so does his playing. i do the same thing though.... i'm actually trying to find a tutorial to explain his ending because his doesn't make sense AT ALL.

  • ah great lesson thanks :D but one question, in the intro, where your hand position is: x7577x, how do you get the 2nd and 3rd strings to sound so high?

  • Comment removed

  • @stickerbooth Those are harmonics.

  • most appreciated brother, those who dislike this can go to hell

  • How long are your nails?

When doing the harmonic tappings my nails keep screeching the strings :(

  • I'm a guitar freak?!, lol, yes i am

  • Great tutorial!

  • THANK YOU!

  • may god bless you with plentyful descendence

  • thank you so much for making this. still stuck on the bridge, but im getting there!

  • hey bro great vid...wats the tuning for it??

  • hmm.. thats nice.. but may i know what tuning did you use?? .. gaddad? daddad? dadgad? hhmm??

  • @eww1299 Its just standard

  • @eww1299

It is standard tuning for Baritone.

So if you want to play in the same tuning as him, you will have to tune your E string down to B and then retune the rest of the strings to it.

  • 1:32 orgasm

  • Thank You very much...

    its a very helpful tutorial!

    thank YOU!!!!

  • Very well done!

  • First off, thanks for this tutorial! It sounds great so far, but I'm having a little trouble. I can play up to 2:44, but I'm finding it hard to see exactly what you're doing at that section.

I realise it would be a lot of work, but it would be amazing if you could record yourself playing through the song slowly, in standard tuning.

  • please do tis in standard tuning

  • I'm having some problem with the left handed middle finger slap. Any suggestions?

  • Hey.

First thank you 4 the tutorial.

I was sad for a long time cuz I dont got a baritone.

Today I`ve tried to tune my regular guitar to the baritone-tuning.

Its not as bad as I thought.

SO DUDES! Just try it out on a regular guitar.

    It works quiet nice.

  • i dont like how u dont atleast do a close up of the riff around 1:45 im stuck when u start adding that open string

  • I can't figure out nothing from this point of view ;(

  • Thanks Champra

  • thank you so much for this video! it's so awesome to play :)

  • good job . Wait many lessons from you !!!

  • Where did u get that hat?

    I want one.

  • Champra, is there anyway you can do Heather's Song tutorial? That would be fantastic.

  • Thanks for this, just what I needed.

  • right on brother! Take care - Welter

  • @champra Class video! You can write to me tabs?

  • I so got this Champa...after like 5 full day of practicin at least 2 hrs a day. Some days I did 4 hrs. Now to watch McKee and put the pieces of the puzzle togeth. Def gotta get some kind of arrangement togeth. Hopefully I'll vid and post to demo how you excellent tutorial was not wasted. So great to finally digest this beast! Thanx man!

  • how do you get the percussion sound from hitting it with your left hand middle finger, when I try it just makes the sound of the note?

  • Thank you man!!!

  • thanks man, brilliant tut!

  • still a noob to guitar found this very useful, big mahalos.

  • Top Man! thank's for the awesome tutorial, only heard this tune yesterday & it's made me pick my guitar up for the first time in about 2 years, this track is one in a million & a must learn....luvin your chilled style, proper cool

  • Thanks man~! Love this tune~!

  • it's a takamine guitar. thanks for the video

  • its ok got it fellas its standard sweeeeeeetttttt.......lol

  • whats the tuning ,standard?

  • I believe the tuning's 2 steps down from standard

  • its actually 3.5 steps dwn buddy

  • what kind of guitar do you play in this vid?

  • Mmm could you say which strings are you playing in the beginning part? And the finger position is on what fret?T=Nice Playin btw :)

  • man, you rule big time, i mean it

  • @jehzbell i second that

  • i cannot play the bridge part using both hands on the bar... can u port another tutorial for that....it's really hard and i cannot see your fingers at some pointT_T.

  • he probably uses .013 .056

  • May I ask what are the string gauges you use?

  • in the side bar

  • For this son in particular I used what AM does - Dean Markley Alchemy 13-56.

Sorry for the late reply Welter

  • Thanks :D

  • great tutorial

  • Brilliant tutorial, the best on Youtube - thanks for this!

  • its the best because its the only one haha this isnt a tutorial at all.... its just a slow demonstration of playing this song....regardless thank you for posting it. It is still useful.

    peace

    brian

  • I've been using your tutorial video for this song in combination with the tabs - and it's been really helpful.

Would you be able to make a similar slowed-down version of the song in standard tuning at some point? It would be super helpful. My guitar sounds particularly shitty in baritone tuning.

  • standard tuning, tuning down will buzz this is for a barritone guitar, and harmonics try playing them closer to the bridge..great song, good tutorial

  • I NEED TUNING for this sht...

  • I just broke my string trying to tune my a to an e. fuck me hard

  • you're supposed to tune it down..

  • i know i noticed after i broke it lmao

  • you should a tutorial of she...just throwin it out there

  • got it, cheers =] x

  • btw i can barely do the first part right now =/

  • im having a hard time getting the harmonic on x7577x

  • Okay, for the life of me, I can not figure out how exactly the beginning of this is played.

I am only an intermediate guitar player, self taught, and I can't get the intro, even watching closely. How exactly is the pinky of the left hand being used on the strings? It looks like there is minimal movement, but from the looks of it it should be blocking the third string from playing at all (which is my problem). I guess this is the disadvantage to being self taught.

  • The pinky is used to do harmonics on both second and third string.

  • this version's being simplified a great deal by champra....missed a deal of notes and beats here and there...but still a great tutorial no matter what:)

  • Ugh I need help on the ending. please some correct tabs on it or a quick lesson.

  • thanks man....helped me alot!:D

  • Yeah, and its either that or spring $1600 on a baritone guitar lol....

  • I would kill to see a tutorial in standard tuning because i can't tune that low without completely messin up my guitar

  • Can someone please play (and post) all the open strings individually so I can get in tune from a video post?

I know that the tuning is B F# D A E B, but I don't know which strings are octaves up or down and can't quite get the tuning correct.

  • EADGBE

    BEADF#B

E goes down to B, A goes down to E, D goes down to A, etc

  • from E tuning go down to those notes on each string up to down

  • Don't listen to this guy. Buy them yourself and support a great artist. It's only $2 for God's sake!

  • where on earth are you buying these tabs? there's no tab for this on candyrat.

  • andy mckees website

  • This lesson helped ALOT Thanks!

  • I'm fairly new to this style and even with the tab I'm slow, but this enables me to learn it 10 times faster. Thanks you #1 !!!

  • Thanks for this, i just bought the tabs and this makes it easier to learn with

  • Dude a gr8 and helpful video!! Infact the only tutorial vdo on Youtube. I learned the bridge part and the ending part of the part from your vdo nice work!!

  • Hey, I actually learned this song using the original Andy Mckee's video and your video!

Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I think the slowing down part helped me a lot on figuring out the notes.

    Thanks again!

  • amazing man, I have been learning this song with your vid for about 5 days, recommended to me through a friend also, you play it perfectly though and its a great tutorial, I'll sub when I finish learning the tap bit lol

  • Amazing, thanks so much :D

  • gracias el video me sirvio mucho para comprender el tab !!!!

  • thank you very much. I am very happy that there are such people. (Sorry for my english,

    I am Russian)

  • So hard ):

and i cant finger pick and i dont have long finger nails/ haha.Gahhhh.

Ill just stick to electric (:

  • just play like a bassist

  • Its to hard haha

  • you definately dont have to have long finger nails at all it just helps all you need is fingers to finger pick

  • Well done! Thanks for the tutorial. I saw your video channel you play very good mate! All the best.

    Jovan.

  • u r way off brow! I guess you didn't hear the rest of the sentence...

  • i was kidding man XD

  • Thanks for this, and kudos to you for figuring this out without tabs, that's the mark of a true musician!

  • Can you make a vid about the BEADF#B tuning?

  • Comment removed

  • ok, this is a great tutorial, but its very difficult for me to tune down to baritone standard, cuz my action is really low. could you PLEASE re-record this in EADGBe? im sure im not the only one with tis issue. thanks SO much.

  • do you think its possible to at least show he tabbing of it with the annotations or something, cuz just watching your fingers all over and over again without knowing where they exactly go makes it more hectic on us but for you its not so hectic just adding tabs...right?

    so...please??

  • I'm sorry, I don't understand a thing about tabs!

    Welter

  • Right on me neither i cant read tabs.. i just sound everything out.

  • Nice job. Good tutorial.

Plus, all the advantages of a Baritone without the stretches. : )

  • GOD BLESS YOU !!!

  • you rock man. thanks so much for doing this, this is one hell of a song!

  • Cheers, Good man!

  • read the vid notes - standard baritone:)

great job champra thank you so much for taking the time and effort to do this.

  • soooooo helpful. awesome job

  • zup?! kinda hard the first time... 2nd time... 3rd time!! shit!! its really hard no matter what time!! even a girl can do it but i cant! saw Ciarra Marie play this on youtube... Fuck its hard!

  • fuck man! awesome job.

  • Hey, thanks a lot for the tutorial. Is there any special tuning to this song?

  • Someone needs to read the video description. ;)

  • I posted half way through the video and I now see he did some right hand modeling. That is cool. Is having nails like that really needed?

  • You get a better sound out of using your nails if you grow, trim, and use them properly.

It's usually part of finger picking on nylon string guitars. Steel string acoustics can chew your nails up if you play a lot.

  • Not that sure, but if you look at Andy McKee's fingers closely, you'd realise that he only grows his fingernail on his right thumb. His other fingers look stubby by comparison.

  • only need about 1/8th inch off the tip of the finger to get a good sound.

  • When you make a tutorial, show us the grip better then you did in this video. It's almost impossible to see what you press.

  • Actually... he does a good job. It is up to you to get a good tab out of the song, and apply the technique. Granted I wish he would have worked more on right hand technique then trying to to teach fretting. Any moron can goggle the tabs, I would like to learn the picking and slapping.

I know I can learn this on my own, but that's what I was expecting out of this.

  • hey! good tutorial! i only needed it for one part, and it's that damn bridge. and since im planning on covering this song too, it puts a damper on my progress. i cant seem to be able to tap both my hands in sync! any idea on how i should go through with it?

    Matt =D

PS: i 5 starred and bookmarked ur cover =P very good.

  • If you mean the bridge as in the part where the right hand is used like "Drifting," you should take it slow.

Also try this: try playing only the right hand and not worrying about the left.

Then try playing with only left hand not worrying about the right.

Then slow it down and put it all together.

That's how I got through "Drifting" and partially this part of the song.

I'm still kinda frustrated at it, but I think you'll get it.

Whatever you have trouble with, take it slow.

  • WOW! This is what i was looking for...

The tabs i downloaded didn't have the last part, so i'll learn from here.

    =)

  • Use the Tabs for guitar Pro;)

  • This is great! Thank you!

  • it helped but ya shoulda said the tuning

  • the tuning is standard on acoustic (EADGBE from low to high). If you had a baritone (which McKee uses) then its still standard tuning but 4 whole steps lower (BEADF#B low to high).

Basically what i'm saying is you can play this tune on your standard tuned acoustic and all the fingerings are exactly the same but the tone is higher.

    Have fun creativekiddo!

  • Oh. Thanks. I just tuned my e to a b, my a to an e, my d to an a, my g to a d, and the last two are are standard. Thanks. Once I figured the tuning, this really helped.

  • i see,now mckee's tuning makes sence lol

im just playing it with standard tuning,it sound great.

    thanks.

  • five steps down not 4.

  • yeah, bad typo on my part! cheers

    ^_^

  • Look at the description! :P

  • I'm a little confused about the intro, when you get to the second part of the harmonic at 1:33. What are you doing with your right hand. Also I'm curious too see how your fingers are placed on the strings because I'm inexperienced so they just look as if their not really pressing anything.

  • Man, I don't know if I'll ever get that tapping part, haha. So hard to figure out what's going on.

Good stuff, thanks for making this. It helped a lot.

  • This is DOPE!!! I taught myself a good portion of this song just from watching version with andy, but this will make MUCH more sense of everything. nice work

  • Its probably really poserish of me to try to learn something this complex when I only got a few months of experience with a guitar... but... damn... just wanna play it, hehe.

  • Nice spirit! The best thing to do is to stop yourself when trying to play it in fullspeed, 'cause since your finger/hand/wrist/arm muscles aren't familiar with the moves, they will tense up, and that tension will make your playing worse! Play as slowly as possible first dusin of times, that'll let your muscles memorize the movements, then increase the speed little by little, as you stay aware of whether you tense up anywhere or not. If you do, stop yourself and play slowly again. Hope it helps!

  • Many thanks for the advice! I'll definitely slow it down; my goal is the learn as much as it is to pick up an amazing song. I'm not a big fan of people just mimicking movements of great artists to look cool (aka posers). Music, after all, is more than an image!

Happy playing Mattheflamme, learning Mckee and Don Ross songs are journeys within themselves.

  • You are not alone, I'm in the same situation...trying to learn this one and development for Antoine Dufour as my first "real" pieces. Glad to see I'm not alone in this crazy but how amazing situation that it is to learn this awesome song for nothing.

  • Oups... from nothing sorry...

  • excellent teaching video, good job!

  • Hey NickCN, I'm having trouble with bridge as well, are GP5 tabs correct for this, sounds slightly different to whats being played here?

  • The tab I'm talking about can be found at 911tabs, the 4 pages guitar pro one. You n
