Great video! What is the crate size in this video? My Shih Tzu will be 8 weeks old when I get her. I plan to crate train her as a puppy and eventually take the crate away. She will be 7-9 pounds as an adult. What size crate do you suggest? I purchased the 30". Thanks!
This is the best crate training video I've come across yet, even better than Howdini and the Petsmart video that I had to actually pay for! Thanks so much!
What type of crate do you recommend to purchase (plastic-sided or wire) and why? Also, where is the best suited place to put a crate in the house - should it be somewhere where the dog can see everything that's going on or in a quiet, isolated room?
@MsZoraZ That's great you like my video - thank you :)
The type of crate will be a personal preference (for both humans and dogs) - I personally like the wire type like the one in the video. It's best to test where to place the crate - where he/she can see is usually good unless it creates a stressful reaction in them such as something passing a window etc. Test when you are home so you feel confident that he/she is OK when you are out :)
@GoodDogsSharonBolt Yeah, I've always liked the plastic kennel crates because they are more cozy and den-like, also you can use them for travel and keep pets safe in the care. The plastic crates are also less expensive. On the other hand the wire crate is nicer to look at, and isn't as much as an eye-sore if you plan to place it in the living room. The dog also gets more ventilation.
The best time for you to do the crate training is when you get home from work or when you have a day off rather than wait for night time/bed time. If 30 seconds is too long make it a shorter time and build it up gradually - remember to use treats and to stay calm - lots of repetition and consistency is the key to success. I wish you all the very best :)
Like the previous commenter, I have a puppy who whines, particularly at night. Her crate in my room is not an option as it is too small. When I take her out to go to the bathroom at night, she starts screaming when I put her back for the rest of the night. She bites and scratches at it. She has to be in her crate in the daytime while I am at work, so she doesn't like it at night. When I tried your technique she kept scratching at the door when I closed it, even for 30 seconds. Suggestions?
Yes, you're right if you go to him when he is making a noise he will associate that when he does that you come. I suggest giving him short periods in the crate during the day whilst you are in another room so he gets used to being on his own and to try a night light during the night in case it's the darkness he is adjusting to. I wish you all the very best.

If you're not able to use puppy treats then use a toy or something he really likes to bring him in and out of the crate.

Thank you for your video, it was quite helpful.
I'm just wondering what your opinion is when the dog has voluntarily gone into the crate and fallen asleep and then wakes up screaming in the night.
I've read that you mustn't go to it or it will associate this behaviour with how he gets his way.
The noise is terrible and I'm really concerned the neighbours are going to complain.
I really want to get him crate trained properly though!
