  • Been on my favorite for umpteen years, and still unbelievably haunting - Thank you for the upload; again!

  • it would be great if some kind soul posted the lyrics to the song, as well as its verbatim translation.

  • harsha1942:

You are dumber than dog $hit - this song/poetry has nothing to do with Krishna or any other deity. It's merely about surviving in the desert, with the bare minimum of life's provisions - so, for the love of Shiva STFU!

  • This song is in praise of Krishna. One of many names given to Lord Krishna is 'Kesariyo' in Rajasthani language. The same word is also used for 'beloved'.

This song is saying Kesariyo is like a flower with thosand petals.

Hazaar = thousand Gul = Petal

    Phool = Flower

His glow is like flash of lightning.

Bijli = Lightning Chamke = glow or Flash

'Beloved' is taken for the Lord in a broader sense. Biro = Brother or the lord is like a protecting brother to a woman.

  • @harsha1942: could you also tell what the other song is about ( by people of the same tribe)? You can watch it here: watch?v=FV8trqxz2t0&NR=1. Would be great, thanks in advance!€

  • i wish that i could join you :)

  • hi, where u from? pm me. i am glad u wanted to join.....

  • You are one lucky fellow.

  • these are kalbelia's from thar desert of India which is in state of Rajasthan. They are nomads and iron smiths. History goes that they own their alligience to Maharana Pratap who lost Mewar in battle of haldighati to Akbar. He swore never to settle on any land except Mewar. He could never defeat Akbar and died a nomad. His kinsmen decided to keep his word and till date remain nomads. They are fun loving folks with talents for music and dance. They travel all over Rajasthan in their caravans,

  • that is amazing! my ancestors are from Gujarat, but in Roumania we are not longer allowed to travel. I hear they are doing this also to the other nomads in India as well. that is how you remove the culture.

  • stii tu sigur ca fix din gujarat?sunt tigani care nu mai stiu nici limba d-apoi locu de unde au plecat din india

  • si te unde sint

  • is din Rajastan astia, le zice Banjari ce Gujarat?

  • @DanceSuriya So sorry to hear that. The harsh realities of the modern world and new economy. In about a 100 years the Romany way of living shall be mostly gone. Its good to make videos like this for the preservation of a memory. Times have changed.

  • Nice Girl

  • The Gypsies were the first Indian people to migrate into Europe a few hundred years ago, and follow similar traditions to modern day Indian people, most notably the Punjabi's. They still speak an Indian language called Romany, similar to Punjabi. They still dress similar, they sing and dance just like my Indian people, since they inherited thier music from India. They even look the same as modern northern Indian people like Punjabis. The only people who can understand their language are Indians.

  • all right dude... I am from rajasthan, rajasthani is their lingo and they dont look like pujabis and I dont know where u got ur facts bu they are way off.

  • I could be wrong, but I think AryaVarta was talking about the Gypsies who have been living in Europe for centuries... not the people in this video.

  • @AryaVarta glad to hear/read that someone knows about our history :) its true that we "european" gipsys all come originally from India. The first group of Roma-People came to Sweden in the 1500-centurys. Sadly, most countrys in europe truly hate us and wants us to leave.

  • @MzKatitzi I live in the U.S. and am learning about the Roma and their culture for the first time. I LOVE the music, dance, and costume! I am particularly interested in the Gitano of Andalusia. I can see how this Indian origin had an influence on the development of Flamenco. Wonderful stuff! (Don't ask how this American, with Irish ancestry got interested in the Romani. I can't explain. LOL)

Watching the girl in the black dress is like watching a kaleidoscope. Amazing!

  • @MzKatitzi no, it was much earlier, 1100 I think. read Gypsies, from the Ganges to the Thames By Donald Kenrick

  • I love the dancer!!! :D :D :D :D

im dancing this dance at a little concert in my local village. :)

  • post a video! it's a gorgeous dance!

  • Thanks for posting this portion of the film. Gatlif's film Mondo has some great music too but not to the same extent as this one.

  • this is from Tony Gatliff documentary Latcho Drom. You can probably find it on amazon or netflix, maybe even Blockbuster...excellent film.

  • this documentary is always amazing every time one watches it...this little boy's voice is amazing, he projects so well, i love the part where he is just jamming with the rhythm with his head movement.

  • that gypsy was preety lol

  • Beautiful dancer!

  • i looove it!! that little boy has an amazing voice n rythm!!!! the 2 girls are so graceful!! YEAHH!!! XD

  • This film is amazing.

  • sar jal tuke bre!

  • that gipsy is hot

esa gitanica esta bien buena jeje!

    nice video!

  • There are a lot of gispy tribes like

    Roma(east europe), Sinti(west/central europe), kalderash(balkan), Gitano(spain/portugal) , Arlije(turkey) , Lovari(hungaria) , romnichal(UK), etc. etc.

  • amazing.........for so many days i have been lookin for actually something like this......just amazing!!!!!! the boy singing the folk song and his voice are just wat a typical rajasthani solk song demands,. after saying this still m speechless.....

  • Desichhokri is an amazing handle to have, congrats and thanks for your comment. I would like to say something about the word "Gypsy" and why it has been used. The generic term for Nomads from the Thar is Banjaras in India - the closest English approximation is the word Gypsy. As you can see the title does refer to them as Banjaras.

  • cmon man i knw all about them, i'm frm the same soil...and we call Binjara=banjara to the nomads ofcourse, but the Kalbeliyas are the ones who actually wear this kinda black clothes and dance inspired by snakes.....:P, so better to call them kalbeliya instead of binjara......omg i love ma culture!!!!!

  • I am sorry the Banjara clarification was for the forum, I just happened to include it in my reply to you - as far as Kalbelia - it is a word that I was entirely ignorant of so thanks.

  • no worries, jus google n find abt it urself.....btw where is this clip frm? is it some movie or a doc.?

  • The clip is from "Latcho Drom" a Tony Gatlif movie, traces the movement of gypsies from the subcontinent to Andalusia.

  • ta!!

  • They just look like people from India. What is the difference?

  • allot of the rajasthan/romani music is so enthralling+most beautiful dresses!---ive heard that the desert snakes inspired their dance+movements,+ notice near all rajstan/romi vids have men playing those snake charming horns !just amazing music+visual! these rajastan/romani people are just one of many sanskrit-derived people based in pakistan-india-bangladesh [sindhi, bengali, gujrati, panjabi, marathi, etc,,hindi+urdhu of cours].only differnce is allot of romani left old india.

  • Simply perfect

  • This is so beautiful.. It's just like the title, 'sand sensuality and color'... Bellisimo!

  • Kaman Garo Kanhaji is great too!

  • I'm a British born "Indian" & it makes me feel proud watching these clips,& wish i knew more about my motherland...

  • What's the criteria by which you define them as gypsy's? To me their Indian.

  • Watch this movie.. Gypsy's originated from India..

  • I was aware of that. I read the wikipedia article prior to ever seeing this clip. Gypsy as a term only applies to those living outside of "India". It is not an "Indian" word.

  • I'm Indian and my ancestors didn't live like the Roma, so there's a specific community in India that the "gypsies" trace their heritage from. I have a friend who is 100% Indian, but her grandfather is specifically Roma, so she's only a quarter Roma. Being Indian doesn't equal Roma. I don't if that explains it, but I hope it helps :)

  • The use of the term gypsy is fundamentally incorrect if it is applied to an current inhabitant of the country known as "India"

  • Well, I think you're saying things now for argument's sake. I didn't use that word to describe Indian Roma, I used it in reference to the Roma known in Europe as gypsies or gitano or bohemienne. But in India, gypsy is used in a similar context as in Europe (perhaps due to colonization). They are nomadic people- singers, dancers, artisans.

  • edudrepus. You are jus another diehard nationalist. "Indian" is also not and indian word. Get it.

  • I was aware of that. There is nothing in this video that quantifies them(the performers) for being referred to as gypsy's or roma.

  • the word gipsy is from egypt that they say there from during there journey, from north-africa to europe, i'm a sinti(holland) myself an gipsy tribe, from the north of india near the sindh a part in india/pakistan and our language is romani an sanskrit language, like Hindi and Punjabi

  • gipsys migrated out of india about a 1000years ago..

do the sinti hav any language similarity to the sindh language?

the video of the banjara tribe in rajasthan.. its similar to the clothing n customs most gypsies follow?

  • i know that our language is an sanskriet but i believe it's similar, but i'm not sure

    rieke toet, Iwan

  • there are these gypsies in Rajasthan, South of India as well.....but they wear same kinda dresses over there........they all speak sindhi/barmeri mized rajasthani language.......

  • Excuse me? Rajasthan is North of India.

  • The film this clip is from is about the Rom ('Gypsies'), their history and migration. This clip was intended to show the beginning of their travels, when their culture, dance and music would still have been quite Indian.

  • Thank you. finally an answer that addresses the material shown.

  • Latcho drom from french director Tony Gatliff , like others of his films, is a masterpiece dedicated to gypsy music.

    And beauty, dignity and peace.

  • Gatlif RULES! Loved Latcho Drom.......... great ethno musicology there....... wow! Loved this part best.... and Spain....

    thanks!

  • Sounds so beautiful, is this from a movie?

  • This is the opening scene of Latcho Drom, by Tony Gatlif. This movie gem retraces the migration of gypsy culture, from India through Turkey, Western Europe all the way to Spain, following only music and dance performers, no blabla, just pure ethnomusical bliss!!!!! One of the best movies ever made...

  • Beautiful.

  • The song name is Oh Kesario Hazari Gul Ro Phool ...

  • thanx ;)

  • I have gypsyblood as well. Sinti as a matter of fact. It makes me proud to belong to such a beautiful group of people.:)

  • The film is called Latcho Drom

  • I thought it had to do with spain?

  • The journey of the Romany people told through musicians and dancers of India, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain.

  • Oh thank you!

  • youre welcome :)

  • Well, Gypsies originated from India. And the movie Latcho Drom tells a story about Indian Gypsies' journey throughout Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain.

  • wich film is this?

  • This is just beautiful! Godly touch...

  • Wow c'est trop beau.

  • you song zooo cool thank you

  • rajasthan :)

  • cool cute

  • the purity of nature. just beautiful!!

  • ce film est une grandeur .

  • I went to the villages in the deserts of Rajasthan, India the summer just before the release of this film. When I saw these images in the film my heart dropped because I had just left these people. This is exactly

what you see when traveling there. What a groundbreaking powerful documentary film.

  • waoooooo cool biutipul haat wook thank you nais musik

  • Yes, wonderful!!

  • beautiful

  • This movie educate you, how the gypsys left india 1.0000 a years ago

  • well people that `s how the gypsy coming from india 1,000 a years ago we come from india the gypsy, and we are allover now.

  • I am so glad all of you liked the video - please make time to see the movie 'Latcho Drom" if you haven't already - the clip is just one of the many good sequences in the movie

  • Are there more sequences from India? I'm considering buying it.

  • i totally agree :D

  • i really this vid..there s so much expressions and emotions in the same time

  • Wow how the woman danced, that was amazing! And her dress was so beautiiful! I loved this video!

  • A great favorite scene from this movie - amazing how the children's voices are so strong so early. Thanks.

  • this video is very good...the music makes you wanna dance. the boy and girl are sooooo adorable!! the gypsies of europe and the gypsies of rajasthan have a alot in common...the roma(gypsies) sould be proud of thier indian roots.

  • This is real music. This is good music, culture that is a positive force in the world. :)

  • This is so interesting, please pay attention to the beginning of the video. I think it has a special message. The way they started making music out of some random sounds is very important. In flamenco, a gorgeous rythm named "MARTINETE" was born exactly as the video shows. Out of small sounds from hammers and other tools for labour. And well.. flamenco is very well known as a dance and culture from the gypsy culture. Excellent job!

  • Yeah - most music around the world has at one time or another drawn inspiration from it's environment, like you pointed out, this video underlines that fact - I am glad you liked it.

  • yea this video is coo as shit...I hope Michael Jackson never gets his hands on that lil boy...couse that kid can sing...and that gipsy girl is beautiful and she dances better then any one that I have ever seen...

  • Bellissimo-fantastico grande regista

  • QUE BONITO VIDEO , MUY BONITO

  • OMG! YES!! I love this sequence to death. That girl does the best damn barrel turns in all of the universe! And I positively love that boy's singing. He's so adorable. Latcho Drom is a fantastic film and I'm so happy you shared this with us. ^_^

  • Brilliant!!!

  • I am glad you liked the movie and this sequence in particular - Thanks.

  • tambien es mi favoritaa!!

  • My favorite movie! My favorite sequence!!! Thanks for putting this on youtube!

  • Same :)))

  • Yup that's what Latcho Drom is all about, the thread that strings all gypsy culture together, from the east to the west - glad you liked the clip.

  • WOW!!! i cant wait to go home and see this for real ! so sad so many of us indians havent witnessed the beauty of our own culture ! also, we can note the similarities between the banjaras and the gypsies of the west.

  • Thanks!

  • Fantastico !!
