yeah but he said he biggest regret was not playing it more...doh! Dear me is that the best you can come up with......the oldest and toughest test of golf and it's not a straight putting contest. As magical as the Masters can be, the greens make it as without them the players would be shooting 65's each time!
Moe Norman was autistic as well as a savant; his quirky behavior was in part a result of these disabilities. What most folks do not know is that along with the quirky behavior caused by these so called learning disabilities come incredible abilities. The ability of imagination, focus, concentration, feel, insight, and often athletic ability are just some of those abilities. Moe Norman was blessed with many incredible abilities and in his words and actions are lessons for us all
He was insulted because those people were afraid of the fact that his ways were so different, yet so better then there own. They were insecure, I MEAN 17 HOLES IN ONES? 9 DOUBLE EAGLES? people 9 double eagles is like 27 birdies... in 9 shots damn..
Blah blah blah...yep the masters is great but treated certain players very badly in the past. Did I mention a country is better....no I didn't pal!!!! Just mifted me that the good old USA think they are better than anyone else as usual, when in fact when it comes to it the oldest and most prized comp in the world is the Open Championship! By the way, I've been to Augusta in 93 and loved it, and have you tried to get a tee off time at St. Andrews........if you want to go down that route!!!
Since when is the Masters the greatest in the world.....what aload of American popas crap! The biggest and main competition in the World is The Open Championship!
@ScruffyNick33 To make the argument of which is better the Masters or the British Open about which country is better shows your lack of passion for golf. I believe the Masters is the greatest event in golf, yet would never argue with a Brit if they thought different. Augusta in spring is unlike any other place, the green jacket, Jack Nicklaus, Amen's corner, it's hard to believe some one would question why so many people love it! Have you ever tried getting a tee time at Augusta? Let it go pal!
@philouvet But in all seriousness this is one of the greatest video's on Moe. He inspires me and in my eye's the best golfer who no one knew about. My dad caddied for him twice and my dad said he never spoke a word to him. just an amazing guy.
I would like to commend you for putting this up and also I noticed you asked a question about Todd Graves, I believe he has a website he teaches a one plane swing much like Moe's. I believe its a very effective golf swing and is coming from a very credible teacher
Quite a shame this extroadinary man was not of a later generation. Had he been playing today he would be the most revered, respected and loved player on tour. Golf has changed significantly since the late 50s. No longer do we accept the dull and the boring, but relish and desire the eccentric and compelling. I would have loved to have seen this man strike the ball , just watch him for one range session to see if all that I have read and heard is true. Thanks you for your story Moe Norman.
Thank you so much Moe. The people in the PGA know now the folly of their foolish ways. I will always LOVE and RESPECT you, even though we never met. Rest In BIRDIES, our friend.
standard behavior by people who have an elitist mentality. conform to our groupthink or hit the road. congrats to moe for telling them to stuff it . the world of golf needs more characters, not fewer.
Still they are picking on Moe in this video by posting what he is saying in words over it. I am from England not Canada and i can understand what he is saying it did not need this but great to see the fine swing he had in his younger days."
he was definetely one of a kind and very effective. He prob had more holes and one and double eagles then anyone in competition. i didnt realize that. just his swing looks wild and crazy. they SHOULD of let him play on pga tour with these results and didn't even offer help.
Thank you so much for your comments, specially from those who had the chance to meet Moe or to watch him playing. The funny thing is that I am French , and nobody has ever heard something about him over here. From my point of view It is a golf and spirit inspiration. Legends never die...
@philouvet I'm glad that at least he got to RULE in Canada and only had to do drudgery labor work sparingly.
He had friends that would take him in as he made his way to Florida in the winter. And when he got to Florida people would pay for his buckets of balls and stand hypnotized and in awe of hie robotic repetition.
I was not allowed on my High School golf team, and in honor of Moe and all wrongly ostracized athletes I continue to burn my hometown to the ground.
I watched Moe Norman give a demonstration at a Winniipeg golf club for about a half hour. He called every shot left to right, right to left, high draw, low draw, 2 bounces and a 10 ft roll, etc. It was unbelievable the control that he had. In the end though, his final comment was: now why would you want to hit all those shots when you can just him em straight and would proceed to hit 10 of the the nicest, straightest 2 irons off the dirt that you ever saw.
His coach was Craig Shankland who is now at LPGA International in Daytona Beach. He was a perfect match for Moe's personality and high regard as a human being and one of the greatest ball strikers. RIP, Moe!
heard sam snead mad a list of the top ten golfes who ever lived and left # 1 blank ...its speculated that it was becuase it was moe norman and he didnt want to anger his advasaries
I had lunch with him once and asked him who his coach was.... He said he would visit his coach down in the US and and never hit a ball.... they just talked about the game for hours...and believe me...Moe could talk!...
I was not familiar with the coaches name... does anyone know who he was?
Moe popped in and out of our golf course when I was growing up. (Uplands GC) I even saw him at the North Yonge Driving range on several occasions. Later when I became a member of the Canadian PGA(inspired by Moe), I saw him working with the all the aspiring young Pro's at many local events. He lived the Game. Greater words, at the end of this piece have never been spoken. He was a great ambassador for Golf.
My father took me to see the Canadian Open at Richelieu Valley in the early 70's. When Moe was announced on the first tee, he didn't acknowledge the crowd and took no practice swing. He just put his tee in the ground and hit the ball before the crowd had finished clapping. His drive split the fairway and he started walking after it before the ball landed. I remember the crowd didn't clap for his drive because he was already gone.
How can mike weir say moe was jus a 'LITTLE BIT' of genius!! This guy was amazing and he knew the secret, the same secret hogan figured out. Moe was fantastic!! Thanks for sharing the vid!!
I never even heard of this man, and this piece on him and his life is some the most interesting stuff I've watched pertaining to golf. And as much as I love to watch and play golf, it just further proves my theory of how elitist this sport can be, both professionally and recreationally. The game needs people like Moe Norman-- someone who will go in there and shake things up while letting the world know that you don't need to change who you are to do the things you love. Excellent video!
One of my heroes - like so many of the truly great people who've graced this planet, sadly, they're better appreciated after they've left us. I wish I had met him to shake his hand.
Living in southern Ontario, I was lucky enough to see Moe play on several occasions. He would come to the club where I worked and did a clinic every year, as he did all around the province during the summers. I was also a handful of people who followed him for a private 18 hole clinic at the former I.B.M. country club in Markam,Ontario when I was about 12 yrs.old. I would have never guessed how treasured and affective this memory would be be. God bless you Moe-you poor bastard. Rest in Peace.
moenorman, org has a great 20 min vid of moe out on the range explaining his swing.click the tab on the bottom right hand corner.best on internet of him explaining his swing
as a caddie i heard a story of moe standing on the 18th tee only needing a par to set the corse record. the thing was it was the first time he had played the course.he asked his playing partner how the hole played. his reply,"it's just a 3 wood and wedge". moe preceeded to tee off with his wedge and hit the 3 wood approach for the par.
it's said he would practice hitting balls on the range until his hands bleed and got blisters, even before tournaments. he had no routine whatsoever either, just smashed balls into the range. he really loved the game.
Golf is happiness It's intoxication w/o the hangover It's stimulation w/o the pills It's price is high It's rewards are richer Some say its a boys pastime Yet it builds men It cleanses the mind Rejuvinates the body It is these things and many more For those of us who know and love it Golf is happiness MO Norman was simply before his time. Simply Amazing
I have changed my swing 3 years ago to the exact way Moe swings. I can't believe how straight it goes now. it's just plain ridiclous. I went to the Todd graves golf academy down in Orlando, FL. Todd graves is known is "Little Moe"
Watched Moe Norman on a driving range in Altamonte Springs, FL one evening back in 1994. The entire place stopped to see what me and the rest of a small crowd was watching--Moe Norman hitting 25-30 balls with a driver that you could cover with a king size comforter. Never saw anything like it before or since. A legend for sure...
Its like God played a trick on golf, giving moe the greatest swing of all time. It will be a long time, if ever that you'll see someone be able to hit the ball like this.
What a legend! Maybe he wasn´t the best golfer ever, but he was the best ever off the tee and fairway, and his swing was pure genius. Nice to a see a good piece on an overlooked character.
I'd love to see his story in a good movie. Epic.

my coach used to play on the canadian tour and was friends with moe norman.
He said that if there was a pond in the middle of the fairway, like a forced carry moe never layed up.
He would hit his drive right at the bridge crossing the pond, and his ball would roll over the bridge. the ball never moved offline for a second.
