The thing about Jon Brion is, he has the ability to see past the acting and faces people portray in their daily lives, and under stands the rhyme and reason of social norms that force people to be who they are. But he uses that understanding to reach out and relate, to the deep down true inner self of the people who listen to his songs talks to you where you're most vulnerable. The part of yourself that you thought only you knew.
@brandoncondo, I don't find it to be sad at all! I think it is hopeful about love. We have our blinders on, feel stranded, etc until you meet that person. "Amidst all the to and fro, someone can say 'hello.' Here we go." It's interesting that we saw two completely different things in this song.
There is a certain amount of Wangst in this movie....but I think this journey is about how another eccentric artist helps save him from that darkness. As A. Sandler's character is so damned beautiful.....this movie is about how the power of friendship and love can save someone trying desperately to climb out of the abyss......
Really a sad song.....you've gotta hope that there's someone for you as strange as you are who can cope with the things that you do without trying to hard. hes got a grasp on reality, the ending really got me. his voice suits the lyrics its kinda creepy but in a good way. i dont know if ive ever related this much to a song before
popnutty. don't speak what you don't know. its a choice. jon brion chooses to stay where he is...he works with numerous artists on their albums..because he is a producer...all those people he is "cashing in on" are friends..that he chooses to help.

@BeSheGoo Very unique..id compare him to elliott smith though..fitting since jon brion sings on elliots song "happiness"...definitely up there with my favorite composers
Jon Brion is a genius. If you like this, you should check out "Synecdoche, New York." Not only is it an amazing movie, but it also has the best original score I've ever heard.

read my previous reply. many have searched VERY DILIGENTLY for it. NO one has a copy. No one. Guaranteed. Period. People like me and cupcake012 have scoured 30 pages of Google results for every different combination of keywords, Limewire, Soulseek, Bearshare, iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, BitTorrent, Jon Brion-esque related forums...everything. And/or 2) go to Largo at the Coronet in LA on almost any Friday around 9:30p and hope to catch him before or after the show and harass him for it. I <3 that song too!
I didn't realise that was Adam Sandler until he said something to the woman at the desk. That happened with Robert Downey Jr too, couldn't see his face but reconised his voice.
PTA's long takes with Brion's music makes me wish this movie could somehow be longer, but i have a feeling it was a good choice leaving this out to enjoy as an extra scene.
I can't believe people gave you a -6 for that comment. It was clearly a joke that I found hilarious (PTA used almost all Aimee Mann in Magnolia for those who are too stupid to get it).
I primarily speak of his orchestral-string arrangements, creativity, and Producing skills as they may appeal to film score seekers. His vocal work alone outdoes Brion by far and beyond! Everything else is... well you get the picture.
Roger could eeaasily do film scores if he just chose to do so, but he spent most of his career behind the scenes and have decided to be a bit modest in lack of a better word. My bad on coming down on Brion too hard, he has made his own niche in film scores and koodos for that but I stick to everything else that I've said. Roger's songs on all solo albums, "Till We Meet Again", "Sleep Children" What You Don't Know About The Girl" are basically "score" potential, goosebumps galore! Beautiful!
Inspector Gadget anyone?! This is pretty obvious. Aside from Jon Brion, Jellyfish made a living out of "who can spot the influence" approach to songwriting. Their songs were so different from one another like show tunes/score type music, jazz, psychodelic-bubblegum, pop they were notorious for it. Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish has always sited Henry Mancini as an influence and Roger J. Manning Jr. contributed to The Pink Panther Theme released in 2004. Check out Roger's credits on his website.
I'm not trying to come off as a Jon Brion hater I just think that he's trying to "cash in" on someone else's ideas. Maybe that's my problem. I mean the man has been around a wealth of talent from Jellyfish, Jason Falkner to Glen Phillips, to name a few. It could be about the convenient deliberations of putting together The Grays w/ Jason Falkner a number of years ago. Again this is all just my prejudgement of the guy and, like my previous comment, that can show otherwise that'd be great!
I agree that he is heavily influenced, but you have to go back farther than the Jellyfish. He has admitted that the Beatles influence is quote "Inescapable for me" Jason Falkner is a great songwriter, and the Grays were ahead of there time as far as ability. It is kind of sad to say he has a big head though. He comes from a gifted musical family, if anything he has balls, for dropping out of school to pursue music. Sometimes his tonality is lacking, but his lyrics are remarkable.
Thanks for replying TheOddbody and I'm aware of his absolute Beatles love affair to the nth degree but my issue is that there is this striking similarity in production and playing wise with him and Roger Manning of Jellyfish. He doesn't have Manning's dynamic and stunning vocal range and his voice isn't as clean as his but he plays a jazzy piano and baroque/ orchestral arrangements SOMEWHAT similarly but without the circus! Coincidence? Maybe. What was his approach to music before Jellyfish?
Ok?...but this is the second vague response concerning his influences that I've gotten. Earlier it was.. "I agree that he is heavily INFLUENCED" and now it's "I think he's influenced by "past great songwriters"? Somehow I'm being bated here. Just kidding-kind of... knobody here wants to agree with me at least directly. I'm going to assume that these GREAT PAST SONGWRITERS and being "heavily influenced" are in part JELLYFISH(Jason Falkner/Roger Manning), Beatles, and I'm sure others, thankx!!
The man has many, many, many influences obviously. I have seen him mention them in numerous interviews. As far as the Falkner/ Manning similarities, it has more to do with the fact that they have all are influenced by a lot of the same artists and play the same styles of music. Roger Manning met Falkner by finding an ad of his in a newspaper which listed many bands as his influences which Manning also liked.
Falkner said somewhere in an interview that he felt he had a lot in common musically with his bandmates in Jellyfish and The Grays, but not much else and they didn't really get along otherwise. Each member of the Grays basically did their own thing without much input from the other members. Brion wrote his songs, Judge wrote his songs, and Falkner wrote his. Having similar influences and styles, the songs somewhat fit together on their album.
Sure Brion was influenced by working with Manning on Spilt Milk and Falkner on Ro Sham Bo, but they are all contemporaries of each other. I have downloaded many of Brion's demos which are dated in the late eighties and early nineties, some of which would be used in his film scores 10+ years later. I think the more important connection between them though is not so much how they influence each other, but how their music contains more of the same common influences.
Funny, I was just listening to his "Drunk Punch Love"? and coming over here to make a comment(I think that's the name), anyway there's a song on there that sounds exactly like this one, maybe an instrumental version. He seems to have carved out a niche' for himself hasn't he- like a fish outta water, composer/arranger type who wants to be out of the ordinary and cool, a big head who craves the attention. I'm not a big fan of this guys voice and never have been, a highly skilled wannabe IMO.
@popnutty Who does he wannabe? Anyone who could call Jon Brion a "wannabe" has never seen him perform at Largo in LA. This guy is literally the most talented person I have ever had the honor to witness. Anyone I meet that hasn't been, I always offer them a money-back guarantee on being blown away by his show. That guarantee has yet to cost me any money. If you're ever in the area, you should check it out.
@bballtim one question, you seem like you could know this. this is the first jon brion song i've heard and i listen to a lot of Elliott Smith, so this song seems like it is addressed at elliott. Do you know something about that? Maybe every JB song deals with a familiar topic to this and i am just over-interpreting.
@JAYKAYAY91 I don't think you're overinterpreting. Jon Brion was a key player in, and producer of, Elliot Smith's figure 8 album (One of my favorites). It's entirely possible he could've been the inspiration for this song, but keep in mind, JB is the type of guy who can write a song every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all of them will be fantastic. Either way, keep listening; all his stuff is killer...
@rockpirate thank you for the response, but i think you got the part wrong about him producing figure 8. i think they did some stuff for the basement album but then jb confronted elliott about his drug abuse and elliott started the album from scratch without jb. anyway, thanks for your comment and i will definitely listen to more of his songs.
Check out "Dragonfly" and "Drive Thru Girl" by Roger Manning. Interesting similarities in putting together the video. If someone can prove to me that Jon Brion was into "scoring" before his stint with Jellyfish then I will be a good boy, but 'till then he was most likely(like all Jellyfish fans) inspired by them, including Jason Falkner. I believe Jellyfish's first score was "Ignorance Is Bliss" before Jon came around..92'? Jellyfish's approach to song writing and production is undeniable!
Ignorance is bliss is not a score, it is a single track from a Nintendo album. Jellyfish never did a "score" (unfortunately). In fact, Brion has done plenty of complete scores whereas Roger Manning has merely contributed to relatively few, and he started this much later. Sturmer wrote some catchy cartton theme songs, also much later and not all that many. Falkner doesn't do scores.
The Manning songs that you mentioned came from his first 2 solo releases which were released within the last few years whereas punch drunk love came out in 2002. Brion released his first solo album in 1999 I believe and has been doing scores since '96.
I agree with you, Manning hasn't done any film scores(much less for long periods of time) like Jon has, I will take your word on that but he has come damn close. Since he practically writes naturally in this mode-songs are at least 5-9min. long and stacked beyond belief with inventive and melodic riches. You're right they have a musical kinship that is inseperable at times, each one unique! Roger's(alias as Malibu) Dance/Electronica album and Logan's Sanuctuary r good examples of what I mean.
He sounds the same as he did when he was in The Grays when he he did "Nothing Between Us". The orchestration and production of it is likened to Spilt Milk.. Jellyfish was well known for this type of production well before few others have tried themselves. Example "Ignorance Is Bliss", "Brighter Day", "Russian Hill", heck all of Spilt Milk and pieces of Bellybutton. What's the big deal? Roger Manning of Jellyfish wrote and arranged tons on Spilt Milk than some think- He taught him well.
Thank you for posting this gem! God. Shit. Holy shit. Does anyone know what song plays at the tail-end of this song, it sounds like Patsy Cline, a very cool little transition. Jon Brion is my new BFF.

I never knew Aimee Mann had a sex change. ; )
Very nice song.

I can't believe people gave you a -6 for that comment. It was clearly a joke that I found hilarious (PTA used almost all Aimee Mann in Magnolia for those who are too stupid to get it).

There is no video for it, not saying someone can't make one. The song alone is hard to find.

I primarily speak of his orchestral-string arrangements, creativity, and Producing skills as they may appeal to film score seekers. His vocal work alone outdoes Brion by far and beyond! Everything else is... well you get the picture.
popnutty 2 years ago
Roger could eeaasily do film scores if he just chose to do so, but he spent most of his career behind the scenes and have decided to be a bit modest in lack of a better word. My bad on coming down on Brion too hard, he has made his own niche in film scores and koodos for that but I stick to everything else that I've said. Roger's songs on all solo albums, "Till We Meet Again", "Sleep Children" What You Don't Know About The Girl" are basically "score" potential, goosebumps galore! Beautiful!
popnutty 2 years ago

Again this is all just my prejudgement of the guy and, like my previous comment, that can show otherwise that'd be great!
popnutty 2 years ago
I agree that he is heavily influenced, but you have to go back farther than the Jellyfish. He has admitted that the Beatles influence is quote "Inescapable for me" Jason Falkner is a great songwriter, and the Grays were ahead of there time as far as ability. It is kind of sad to say he has a big head though. He comes from a gifted musical family, if anything he has balls, for dropping out of school to pursue music. Sometimes his tonality is lacking, but his lyrics are remarkable.
TheOddbody 2 years ago
Thanks for replying TheOddbody and I'm aware of his absolute Beatles love affair to the nth degree but my issue is that there is this striking similarity in production and playing wise with him and Roger Manning of Jellyfish. He doesn't have Manning's dynamic and stunning vocal range and his voice isn't as clean as his but he plays a jazzy piano and baroque/ orchestral arrangements SOMEWHAT similarly but without the circus! Coincidence? Maybe. What was his approach to music before Jellyfish?
popnutty 2 years ago
I don't think he's trying to cash in but I think he's influenced by past great songwriters. I love this song. Very beautiful.
topseysasha 2 years ago
Ok?...but this is the second vague response concerning his influences that I've gotten. Earlier it was.. "I agree that he is heavily INFLUENCED" and now it's "I think he's influenced by "past great songwriters"? Somehow I'm being bated here. Just kidding-kind of... knobody here wants to agree with me at least directly. I'm going to assume that these GREAT PAST SONGWRITERS and being "heavily influenced" are in part JELLYFISH(Jason Falkner/Roger Manning), Beatles, and I'm sure others, thankx!!
popnutty 2 years ago
The man has many, many, many influences obviously. I have seen him mention them in numerous interviews. As far as the Falkner/ Manning similarities, it has more to do with the fact that they have all are influenced by a lot of the same artists and play the same styles of music. Roger Manning met Falkner by finding an ad of his in a newspaper which listed many bands as his influences which Manning also liked.
mcmokken 2 years ago
Falkner said somewhere in an interview that he felt he had a lot in common musically with his bandmates in Jellyfish and The Grays, but not much else and they didn't really get along otherwise. Each member of the Grays basically did their own thing without much input from the other members. Brion wrote his songs, Judge wrote his songs, and Falkner wrote his. Having similar influences and styles, the songs somewhat fit together on their album.
mcmokken 2 years ago

I'm not a big fan of this guys voice and never have been, a highly skilled wannabe IMO.
popnutty 2 years ago
This song is from "Punch Drunk Love"
TheOddbody 2 years ago
@popnutty Who does he wannabe? Anyone who could call Jon Brion a "wannabe" has never seen him perform at Largo in LA. This guy is literally the most talented person I have ever had the honor to witness. Anyone I meet that hasn't been, I always offer them a money-back guarantee on being blown away by his show. That guarantee has yet to cost me any money. If you're ever in the area, you should check it out.
bballtim 1 year ago 3
@bballtim one question, you seem like you could know this. this is the first jon brion song i've heard and i listen to a lot of Elliott Smith, so this song seems like it is addressed at elliott. Do you know something about that? Maybe every JB song deals with a familiar topic to this and i am just over-interpreting.
JAYKAYAY91 1 year ago
@JAYKAYAY91 I don't think you're overinterpreting. Jon Brion was a key player in, and producer of, Elliot Smith's figure 8 album (One of my favorites). It's entirely possible he could've been the inspiration for this song, but keep in mind, JB is the type of guy who can write a song every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and all of them will be fantastic. Either way, keep listening; all his stuff is killer...
rockpirate 11 months ago
@rockpirate thank you for the response, but i think you got the part wrong about him producing figure 8. i think they did some stuff for the basement album but then jb confronted elliott about his drug abuse and elliott started the album from scratch without jb. anyway, thanks for your comment and i will definitely listen to more of his songs.
JAYKAYAY91 11 months ago
is there a instrumental version of this song?

Check out "Dragonfly" and "Drive Thru Girl" by Roger Manning. Interesting similarities in putting together the video. If someone can prove to me that Jon Brion was into "scoring" before his stint with Jellyfish then I will be a good boy, but 'till then he was most likely(like all Jellyfish fans) inspired by them, including Jason Falkner. I believe Jellyfish's first score was "Ignorance Is Bliss" before Jon came around..92'? Jellyfish's approach to song writing and production is undeniable!
popnutty 2 years ago
Ignorance is bliss is not a score, it is a single track from a Nintendo album. Jellyfish never did a "score" (unfortunately). In fact, Brion has done plenty of complete scores whereas Roger Manning has merely contributed to relatively few, and he started this much later. Sturmer wrote some catchy cartton theme songs, also much later and not all that many. Falkner doesn't do scores.
mcmokken 2 years ago
The Manning songs that you mentioned came from his first 2 solo releases which were released within the last few years whereas punch drunk love came out in 2002. Brion released his first solo album in 1999 I believe and has been doing scores since '96.
mcmokken 2 years ago
I agree with you, Manning hasn't done any film scores(much less for long periods of time) like Jon has, I will take your word on that but he has come damn close. Since he practically writes naturally in this mode-songs are at least 5-9min. long and stacked beyond belief with inventive and melodic riches. You're right they have a musical kinship that is inseperable at times, each one unique! Roger's(alias as Malibu) Dance/Electronica album and Logan's Sanuctuary r good examples of what I mean.

John Brion's score in 'Stepbrothers' was brilliant, a full display of the man's creativity.
