@pmeitner....watch the beginning of the movie after the opening credits. The wagon wheel actually seizes up (or appears to) as the wagon is moving at a good clip. It MIGHT be they had a brake mechanism applied to it to make it appear that way...when the wagon gets to town, the rich dude tells someone to have a look at that left rear wheel, it was noisy- might have been part of the script after all.
Look at the back wheel on the Wagon at 2:02. It Stops! They used models in the old days for some of the scenes. Pretty Funny. It's not the only mistake in the Movie. Watch when they pick up Billy and he's scruffy, the next scene he's clean shaven. It's like that with him through the whole movie.
In the movie we are told that the the war wagon makes a 43 and a half mile journey carrying its load. I don't know a lot about horses but I'm pretty sure they couldn't keep that pace going pulling a heavy wagon loaded with gold. One of my favourite westerns.
@9mrmac I'd bet if such a gold shipment operation as depicted in War Wagon did exist, they'd have relay stations set up along the 43 mile run, and change out horse teams (like stage coach lines used to have) every so many miles. I don't think the movie script rules out this possibility and going after the wagon at one particular spot, as executed in the movie, doesn't rule this possibility in or out.
Very catchy tune done real well by the late Ed Ames. Love the hard working horses. I think they might have needed another team if that sucker was real iron plate, but at least they added another pair beyond the normal.
Which is rather strange as it was mostly filmed in Arizona- I looked it up. Its just your town needed a role model to upgrade from mud huts, they saw this movie and said "yeah, we can do this"
I don't know where you "looked it up" but everywhere I've checked says it was filmed in Zacatecas, Mexico; Durango, Mexico; and the Universal Back Lot. Nothing about Arizona. Next time try IMDB. I would think 84lok would recognize his hometown. Wouldn't you recognize yours if you saw on TV?
I wished someone would post the whole movie. One of my favorite John Wayne movies.
Ya know, they don't make'em like they used to...and I bet a bunch of money, John Wayne rolled around in his grave two, or three times (or more...haha) after Hollywood made Brokeback Mountain.

Loved this movie. Also too is the background shots they used to make at the begining of these movies. Great to Americas splendor.

Yes and in the first scene of the movie, the guy gets out of the wagon and tells the livery guy to have a look at that back wheel.

I noticed that a 2:01 the back wheel of the war wagon looks like it got stuck and quit spinning for a couple seconds.

I heard that the wagon was wood and spray painted gray in order to
look like Iron.
