Imagine being about ten, and you find your older brothers records. You start hearing George Carlin...Eddie Murphy...and BARNACLE BILL! The version I have on lp is very dirty.
Hello, can someone send me the sheet music of bix (for pianoforte): in the dark, flashes, candlelights, I can share many pdf of sheet music..... of bix I only have in a mist if you need i will send to you.
Cajmere and Dajae reworked this great man's work in the house music timeless classic, "U Got Me Up." Being from Chicago, blues and house music are in my blood so this discovery will allow me to die a fulfilled man. hahahaha!!
Carson Robison wrote over 500 songs mostly country western tunes- he is mentioned in the opening verse of Hillbilly Heaven by Tex Ritter because Carson was a powerhouse f a musical influence in the early days- Carson had a split tongue due to an accident as a youth He used to whistle for many country records because he could effect a very interesting whistle
An all star session indeed. Quotation marks around all-star are superfluous. You could not have put together a better jazz band than this in 1930. Bubber Miley, Bix, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, Bud Freeman, Venuti & Lang, Gene Krupa. And they made this record that sounds like it's from a Betty Boop cartoon. I love it but wish they could have made better use of the lineup. They did record Rockin' Chair the same day, but I wish there was more.
Actually this isn't the first time this song was recorded. That honor goes to Bud Billings' (a pseudonym of Carson Robinson) who recorded it on 12/28/1928. The song was written by Robinson and Frank Luther. Luther was on the recording, but he was not credited, on the label, under his psuedonym, Joe Billings.
This record was recorded on May 21, 1930. It's Bix's first record date since his breakdown and illness with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra in September of 1929. Besides Bix the other soloists are Benny Goodman (clarinet) and a brief solo on tenor sax by Bud Freeman. Gene Krupa is the drummer and can really be heard throughout.
I don't think this was censored at all--it was actually issued. With the primitive technology of those days, it was hard to hear Joe Venuti say "shitter" (I've also heard "shithead"). He was considered a real cut-up, and he would do something like this -- RG
I love this version!the trumpet playing is amazing, and the gruff voices of the band, fit the character of bill perfectly-thanks for a childhood memory...

America in the 1920's was pure party and debauchery. Hence the "Roaring 20's", Then the slap in the face in 1929.
Again in the 1980's.............lesson not learned.

This was an "all-star" session under the direction of Hoagy Carmichael, who provided "vocals" with Carson Robison and Joe Venuti...

I think compared to the original lyrics it was censored?
mojoman4147 2 years ago
Yeah if you check on Wikipedia you can find the original raunchy lyrics for Barnacle Bill, This is definately a sanitized take on the song,
I always wonder if any record company from that era put out an uncensored version with most of the lyrics intact.
