hmm yeah never really thought of it like that. I saw monitors and TV as the same - but moving something on the TV ... yeah mindblowing once :) Also the fact that they don't care for greater and greater grafic - it's the same :) We have something called "Text TV" here which I always hoped would make games ... same grafic as Videopac and such.
@chrisstoffer TextTV sounds like our Teletext. I think they shut it down a couple of years ago though. It was originally done using Acorn BBC Micro Model B computers.
I always find the paddle games very difficult to play without a paddle on these game compilations on more modern systems. I tend to simply avoid playing those games on the compilations because I wind up just getting frustrated at the controls.
@PixelOutlaw Given that the Dual Shock wasn't released when this game came out, it's not really their fault. It'd definitely be better with analogue control, but what can you do?
well you took my comment cos I thought I was the only one whom noticed the fact that the ball would go through a whole load of bricks and not hit one.
Awesome review as always Steve and keep up the good work
The Saturn version of this collection has analog support, but only with the Mission Stick. It won't work with the 3d controller in analog mode. I find Mission Stick control very difficult, though. The stick is the paddle, instead of just controlling the paddle. The paddle is on the left edge when the stick is at its leftmost point, at the rightmost point on the other side, and tracks the stick in between. Confusing! Missile Command and Centipede, however, greatly benefit from the Mission Stick.
Thanks for showing this Steve, I am trying to find those Atari collections on various platforms. I'm going through a 2600/5600/7800 fixation at the moment LOL
I've never seen this game in action before, I don't think and I have to say: that's the most brutal Arkanoid-type game I've ever seen. Ridiculously small Vaus (sp?), only able to hit one brick per launch and no power-ups.
Super Breakout is a fantastic game, but I couldn't play it well with a D-pad (shudders at the thought) either , which is why I only play it on my Atari 2600. Love those Paddle controllers! :)
the games awsome

I have played quite a bit of this over the years, but it's Arkanoid all the way for me, class game.

@Croooow111 The time it took to record this video was about long enough to last me for some time... lol.

This conversion of the game is botched. It really becomes pretty close to nonsensical with the ps2 controller.

@ABlackFalcon I had to go Google "Sega mission stick" just to see what it looked like. I don't think I've ever seen one of those.

I really like this game, but I'm terrible at it lol
wow, the bat/bar at the bottom is small...

You got to have that paddle controller to really play these type of games.

Arkanoid was the best version of this in my opinion and you can only enjoy this game with analogue controls, great video.
ArcadeMameMachine 1 year ago
@ArcadeMameMachine I agree, Arkanoid is definitely better, but they had quite a while to develop it.
Super Breakout was around '78 while Arkanoid was '86.

I don't think I'd like this version, actually. :(
Good SWILL, though! :D

@AtsumaKarin Arkanoid is a Breakout style game :P
Though to be honest, I do prefer Arkanoid.

Great childhood ideas Steve... long may they live.

i remember this game, it was very annoying cos it got too quick and difficult to play, but its a simple game and i like it,
Blitzpheonix2010 1 year ago
It's incredibly basic - it seems it only hits one brick each time and ases through any others...
