OK OK, I will settle this. It is a sprint car. Not long after this incident we put big rubber bands around the quick release arm so that nothing could accidently pop the latch while racing.
@Brettz0r056 It doesn't need a wing to be a sprintcar. Sprintcars have full size car engines. chevy, chrysler, ford engines up to as much as 410 cubes. Midgets are much smaller and run a variety of smaller engines like vw's 4cylinders ect it has nothing to do with wings whatsoever
@lenyo123 ur an idiot bro haha a full size car engine would never fit in a sprint car.. they are specially buit by a few elite engine builders... yes ford has made some but not many they are NOT the standard car engine
@Swartzie6 midgets are much smaller, weigh around 900 lbs w/o the driver, and usually run 4 cyl engines on methanol. the average midget engine today puts out close to 400 hp, which makes them lightning quick considering their light weight. sprint cars weigh about 1500 lbs w/o driver, are bigger obviously, and usually run v8s on methanol. i think they put out between 600 and 900 hp depending on the division and motor size. whether the car has a wing or not doesnt really matter.
got to love the advances in safety you practically never see that now a days... wish they ran sprints at the track near me on a regular basis... but big block 358 modifieds still just as interesting
My father died in a sprint car this exact way, in Austin Texas. But If you love what you doing then its worth the risk. Kudo's to all the Great Drivers! the ones who make it and the ones who don't.
actually he probably was since you cant even start your car without one... the seatbelts break dumbass ive had it happen. they either break or the bolt holding them breaks or the spot they are tied into breaks.
You dont need seatbelts to start a car. I broke during a feature took my belts and restraints off and there was a caution, my crew fixed the car and i didnt have time to do my belts and went out and finished the race. but yes everything else i agree with.
you my friend are trying to blow smoke up peoples ass's too! No One and I say No one with a half a brain would do this, and the fact that the officails would see you and not start the race, you are a idiot
Early sprint cars and midgets were kind of hard to tell apart, considering that neither of them had wings at the time. Winged sprint cars didn't start to appear until the mid 1970s. However, these are definitely sprint cars. Most early midgets did not have roll cages as sprint cars, like the ones in this video did. Also, there are even some types of midgets that run wings, like NEMA and early ARDC, so you can't really base your definition of a sprint car on anything that has a wing.
This was a California Racing Assoc. (CRA Sprint Cars!) race at the great Ascot Park, in Gardena, CA. June 10th 1972, heat race action, John Kellar flips over Frank Burgin's car. While he was upside down, Kellar's hand hit the release on his seat belt quick release, and well, releasing him! He suffered only a broken pelvis, pretty amazing when you see the crash.
sprint cars have 8 cylinder engines and midgets have 4 cylinder engines... both run with and without wings although i think that this video pre-dates wings on either
Wow, you really don't know shit about about sprints and midgets. Just because it has or doesn't have a wing means nothing. Think before you open your mouth (or type in this instance).
@SoFasttv why does everyone think that just because the car doesnt have a wing on it that its a midget? midgets and sprints are two entirely different racecars...
@SoFasttv Yes I was there! but what happened was the driver slid down in his seat and the shoulder straps came loose and the the centrifugal force of the barrel roll ejected him out of the car, he was very lucky man.
That's nothing compared to Rod Jones' flip at Sharon Speedway last year. His sprint got (literally) torn right down the middle. Engine totally separated from the cockpit, about ten feet away. Stunningly, Rod walked away. (Search for it, it was heavily publicized)

Sprint Cars. On the car that the flipping car rolled over, you can see intake ports in the hood. That would mean a V8 engined sprint car.
