In 1979 the USSR invaded it for a bloody long unwinnable against the Mujahideen. 11 years & 11 months after this happened & after many years of "Debt" & economic decline the USSR totally collapsed. From my limited knowledge on the subject (it is growing as I study the Cold War and International Relations) the US and USSR went from allies fro WWII, the US didn't want communism to spread so they went to war in Korea, then the Soviets funded he Vietnamese, so the US funded the Afghans! The US leave Afghanistan in an absolute mess, the CIA training camps that they set up in Afghanistan turn into terror cells and disgruntles fundamentalists attack the US. Crazy!

America was afraid to deploy troops to Afghanistan because of the whole nuclear war scare. But the Afghans went up against a force with helicopters, tanks, trained men etc. The Afghans had a few m16's and stingers but only a few men would have these, the rest used weapons like AKs and RPG's, even WW1 weapons! And the Afghans won, no offense Russia but you suck

The Soviets lost fifteen thousand men while the Afghans lost over a million. The Soviets eventually got tired of it all and withdrew. They weren't destroyed or anything like that, if that's what you believe.

@Hyperman09 The Soviets and Chinese weren't allies. Since the death of Stalin, Chinese and Soviet relationship took a turn for the worse. And with the death of Mao, they completely dissolved. The PRC and the USSR had very different political and economic beliefs. Though they may of both been Socialist, they did not see eye to eye.
