It makes it easier once you know how to use it. I do a little wire walking myself and when I first learned I didn't use anything extra to balance. When I first tried it with a bar it was really, really difficult because I wasn't used to it. They're really heavy so one of the problems I had was really controlling it and not letting it tip and then pull me off the wire. However, once you can get control of the bar and can keep the bar balanced, it makes it a lot easier.

This is indeed an athletic competition, not art, but many of the folks in this are artistic performers - highwire, skywalkers, tightwire dancers, etc. Many did this to help bring attention to the art of it.

Of course, once they signed on, they all wanted to win. Like actors and athletes, all highwire walkers have rather impressive egos to stroke.
