I'm a definite Trekkie. I think that Star Wars is ok. I saw all the movies. I still like ST better for some reason. Funny part is, of all the rivalries between movies and shows, this SW-ST one is the most vigourous. Anyone know any other ones?

One person likes one type of fiction, someone else likes another. I actually do enjoy them both, I just prefer the ST universe...perhaps because it's closer to science fiction rathter than science fantasy. And perhaps because it's based on the human experience, not 'a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away'. Again, just a preference.

Also for those who have not watched SW or ST: 1: the first DS did not jam, cause you know the fighters never lost their sensor locks on the vent and on other fighters, nor did the fighters lose the ability to communicate with one another and their base on a planet/moon. 2: at STL the DS was slow, very slow. 3: STs photon torpedoes have never missed due to jamming, as far as I know of. there are examples were torpedoes were dodged by very fast maneuvers and faulty programming.
@ISSFIPhoenix Yet, they failed to detect the Tie fighters, and we could see that the targeting sensors struggled to get a lock-on. And how can the Death Star be considered slow when it covered over 300.000 km in 15 minutes with an average speed of 333 km/s. And ST torpedoes have failed to hit many hundred meter long warships from a distance of just a few kilometers (seen often in DS9 battles), and ST barely use dedicated jamming as it would fuck up their transporter abilities.

A photon torpedo could hardly achieve a lock-on with such sensor disruptions.

@MrOrionII1999 The problem with those weapons are that they are chain reaction based, or so it appears (except for the Doomsday machine, as I remember we never saw it fire so it's most likely that it used brute force). The problem with a chain reaction is that it needs matter to react with, and if a shield is in the way it's going to be very useless. All of those weapons you mentioned are hardly impressive compared to the Death Star when it comes to power output.

@billywarp1 They tried it on USS Enterprise NCC-1701 once. It broke their power system. (TOS: "The Paradise Syndrome") Though, they managed to pull it off on Enterprise NX-01, so they probably just did it wrong.

Also for those who have not watched SW or ST: 1: the first DS did not jam, cause you know the fighters never lost their sensor locks on the vent and on other fighters, nor did the fighters lose the ability to communicate with one another and their base on a planet/moon. 2: at STL the DS was slow, very slow. 3: STs photon torpedoes have never missed due to jamming, as far as I know of. there are examples were torpedoes were dodged by very fast maneuvers and faulty programming.

And how can the Death Star be considered slow when it covered over 300.000 km in 15 minutes with an average speed of 333 km/s. And ST torpedoes have failed to hit many hundred meter long warships from a distance of just a few kilometers (seen often in DS9 battles), and ST barely use dedicated jamming as it would fuck up their transporter abilities.

@ISSFIPhoenix Besides, the "A New Hope" novel clearly describes massive distortions near the trench area of the Death Star. General Dodonna even suspected the fighters to loose much of their maneuverability thanks to that.

I think Star Wars and Star Trek are both fantastic, and it's pretty funny how people like you and others try to compare the two together. @MrOrionII1999 No, I don't. The jamming around the trench was so severe that the fighters actually lost maneuverability, and had zero functional computer targeting. Hell, the only reason they succeeded was that Luke used the force to guide the torpedoe into the exhaust.

@onlypeaceindeath what shields? the DS had a useless magnetic shield only. two Jamming would not stop a photon torpedoe as they have been seen flying into a star and they can be fired right down the vent from a distance. three jamming was never stated to have been caused by the first DS only the second. four no jaming has canonicial stopped a photon torpedoe as far as i can remember.

Shields that could withstand the firepower of entire starfleets. As I understand the shields had badly overlapping fields which created holes large enough for fighters to fly through. And what do you think jamming is? Jamming is the disruption of communication and sensors. The jamming the Death Star produced was so severe that all the fighters lost all forms of sensors and even lost most of their maneuverability. A photon torpedo could hardly achieve a lock-on with such sensor disruptions.

@onlypeaceindeath dude there were no shields for the first DS other than a weak magnetic shield. The first DS again did not produce any jamming. I know what jamming is, my point was that natural and artificial jamming sources have never been seen to disrupt a photon torpedoe's sensors in ST as far as I can remember, and Dude the photon torpedoes can also be fired/programmed as dumb weapons and shot in a straight line at the vent from a distance, no need for a ship to travel along the trench.

Photon torpedoes have been shown to miss from time to time so its obviously that they can be fooled. @MrOrionII1999 The problem with those weapons are that they are chain reaction based, or so it appears (except for the Doomsday machine, as I remember we never saw it fire so it's most likely that it used brute force). The problem with a chain reaction is that it needs matter to react with, and if a shield is in the way it's going to be very useless. All of those weapons you mentioned are hardly impressive compared to the Death Star when it comes to power output.

SW and ST in itself has a relation through Scify, but technially St has a hight tech level... However - there is a much more solid relation for SW to Dune then ST.
