@maths36 I think that deep down, Elizabeth had every reason to question the motives of any man she knew. Yes, she and Dudley grew up together and under suspicion of treason by the then ruler of England. But she would never allow any man to control her, and so I don't think she ever put herself in the position to lose the respect of her court or the people of England, by risking pregnancy, or ever marrying for the that matter.

The historical Elizabeth may never have wanted to marry, because it meant giving up or at least sharing power with a husband, but by pretending to be in the marriage market she could use it for diplomatic advantage.

I doubt whether she spelled it out openly, but some such thoughts probably motivated her. Her sister lost much of her power as a result of marrying Philip, and would have lost more if he had stayed in England.
On the other hand, pretending to be available for marriage was useful for diplomatic goals.

It's unlikely Elizabeth would have had sex out of wed lock whilst she was queen. She was a very intelligent woman and she probably wouldnt' have risked the scandal of an affair simply.

I loved the way that, when the France ambassador tried to present that proposal to Elizabeth. I loved how she handled that with France. She is not stupid! She knows what the real intentions of the French were at that time. And how that Mary in France had been running her mouth.
It's like she basically said to him, "I'm not stupid, I know what you all are up to. And I don't trust you ass wipes" Ha! Tell'em my lady, tell them. =)

Also take note that she was a devoutly Christian woman of the 16th century who never married, that makes it highly unlikely that she was anything but a virgin. As Elizabeth said, she is married to the people of England.
