How to install windows xp from a usb flash disk drive (USBmultiboot)

i have two computers, one im using right now, andthe other one which isnt working.

I want to be able to uue the usb to install windows on he oe that isnt working, because xp cd doesnt boot. Do ia hve to download this usb multiboot to the pc im usign right now, and then once created from here, then I plug it in to the pc that im trying to install windows xp from?

Using a USB Flash drive as a system drive like this should be a last resort, such as when installing Windows to a netbook or laptop that doesn't have a CD drive.

Flash drives do have near instant access times, but they have much lower data transfer rates than hard drives and so their read/write speeds are much slower. They're also not designed to stand constant read/writes either, so the chances are it wouldn't be long before they fail.

don't understand why people still install xp with usb drive. it can be done after a long struggle. however, you can install the os, that's it. many programs needs to modify windows files and will give you an error because the path name is wrapped by whatever program that makes your usb stick bootable. there is no way your program can find the exact file cause the file location has been modified. bad idea to install xp.

there are still computers laptops/desktops which are low on resources, and therefore XP is a far better choice for them, even if win7 rocks. It can be done quite easily if you know what you are doing.

@ime021 I have tried installing xp with usb extensively. doesn't work if you need more than serving the web. A crippled operating system is all you get. I spent $15 on a dvd drive and my life is much better since to say the least.

you should mention hardware that you were using (machine/ usb stick) because of the the other users.

As I stated earlier on my "Dell inspirion 1020 atom n450" its working great...much better than I expected.

The point that might be in question is the bios settings for the hard drive and the question in some point of creating usb XP installation, where you are asked will the sistem would be run from the usb or Hard drive....this busted my first installation...hope this helps...

@ime021 the os works fine as is for me. the only down side (very significant) is that when ever I install drivers or other addons that requires system files update, it won't work because the address is hard coded in many drivers and the usb installer wrapper changes the location of these files. xp has reached it's limits a long time ago. linux is much better than windows in many regards.

@ionutbreana You need to slipstream harddisk driver. Recommend you to go to nLite and read up (will take long time so prepare to spend a week). But eventually you can do that and more. nLite is used for customizing the installation media. Again, dont believe me. Read up on it.

@ayushme29 It depends on you BIOS. I dont recommend you to change it unless you know what you are doing. Often you can just change media to boot up from. Google your computer model + choose boot device. Most of the newly made have that function.
