This apparently was the first use of a Roland TR-808 drum machine in a music setting, other than as a clicktrack in the studio which is what it was used for before then. :)
As a Synth Lover i have to say some serious Gear Porn is going on in this video ;) Excellent playing of course! Top musicians - no doupt. I wonder what they do now...
@SuperFreddyFingers well why would he cover it if he didn't think the original was any good? it made an impact to him somehow if he chose to honor YMO by covering it out of any other song that's ever been written, so don't be quick to judge.
AMAZING SONG and video!! I agree with MacabreBerries - why is the audience sitting down?? I guarantee those cheers at the beginning are fake!! LOL - still the song and video/concept are mind-blowing!!
He was the "Computer programmer". He controlled all the background sound effects (MOOG-III modular), and/or click tracks that the band played along to. Before the advent of computers, laptops, and sequencers, you needed this guy!
Madonna's 'Into the Groove' sounds similar to this great composition by Yellow Magic Orchestra. Just note after 1:15. I won't be surprised if she (or the person who composed it for her) was directly influenced by the rhythm on this track.
For all you drum machine enthusiasts out there, this song is one of the first uses of the Roland TR-808, which came out the same year. You can hear the claves and hand claps. As these guys are from Japan (as is Roland), it's possible that the 808 wasn't even available in the United States (where it has become entrenched in popular music) at the time of this performance. I can't find it in the video, though. This is before MIDI came out (1983).
Why people keep posting such nasty comments about this brilliant piece of music??? I love it! There's nothing to work with opium here whatsoever. Lots of love to YMO!
The Nippon Budokan is located in Kitanomaru Park in the center of Tokyo, two minutes' walking distance from Kudanshita Subway Station, and near Yasukuni Shrine. This 42 m (140 ft) high imposing octagonal structure holds 14,201 people (arena seats: 2,762, 1st floor seats: 3,199, 2nd floor seats: 7,760, standee: 480) and is modeled after a hall in Hōryū-ji in Nara.
If you're talking about the version from BGM, it's not the original! Sakamoto made an album called 1000 Knives before YMO's first album. I haven't heard this real original yet...
