  • This apparently was the first use of a Roland TR-808 drum machine in a music setting, other than as a clicktrack in the studio which is what it was used for before then. :)

  • The Japanese are pretty afraid to cut it up huh?! LOL They are very reserved! That must be a cultural thing?

  • I love this group. this stuff was so absolutely revolutionary. Very experimental and great for those who have the taste for it!

  • if i was going to record a live album i would do it in japan because the crowd would be polite

  • I literally raised my hand to at the beginning too it was natural.

  • Apparently, this is a dance song that everyone dances to internally.

  • Hahah i like how all the Japanese are sitting there so politely clapping like their some folk group

  • audience looks half asleep

  • @narudh

    culture t'ing

  • MASTERPIECE!!!

  • As a Synth Lover i have to say some serious Gear Porn is going on in this video ;) Excellent playing of course! Top musicians - no doupt. I wonder what they do now...

  • I think in Budokan they're give the beast music ever they played...

  • @SuperFreddyFingers well why would he cover it if he didn't think the original was any good? it made an impact to him somehow if he chose to honor YMO by covering it out of any other song that's ever been written, so don't be quick to judge.

  • This was a live in 30 years ago. Back then audience were not allowed to stand-up in Japan. Things have changed a lot since then :-)

  • YMO may well have been the first musicians to adopt ear monitoring, rather than the stage or side fill monitors.

  • If i'm not wrong, the audience (i was one of them) were not allowed to stand up during the live performance.

  • WOW, you mean to tell me that musicians back then actually had enough talent to play an instrument?

  • soooooooooo goooooooooooooooooood

  • boring audience

  • I WANT TO SEE THIS LIVE. Pity I was born 12 years after this concert, f-f-f-

    I love Akiko Yano's dancing. :)

  • I sign that to :)

I have heard this group since early 80`s.

If there is a concert in 2010 with YMO!=I book a flight frpm Sweden over to Japan!

Really like them, along with Kraftwerk :)

    // Sweden Fan!!!

  • epic

  • AMAZING SONG and video!! I agree with MacabreBerries - why is the audience sitting down?? I guarantee those cheers at the beginning are fake!! LOL - still the song and video/concept are mind-blowing!!

  • Man that audience is square, just sitting still in their seats like that

  • thank you very much, i will have to find some now!

  • Does anyone know the brand/model of headset that they are all wearing in this clip?

  • They use Victor HP-550 head phones, and Shure SM-10 headset microphones usually. The girl uses a Sennheiser

HD414 sometimes as seen at 4:20.

  • 1.15

Pure synth sex right there. Brilliant!

  • I want to make sex to those synths

  • what does the person middle back do?

  • He was the "Computer programmer". He controlled all the background sound effects (MOOG-III modular), and/or click tracks that the band played along to. Before the advent of computers, laptops, and sequencers, you needed this guy!

  • Who knows the name of the dancing Girl???

  • Her name is Akko

  • Akiko Yano

  • Formerly Mrs Sakamoto

  • is it live?

how can he be playing chords on an odyssey?

  • It is live, and Haruomi Hosono (bassist playing the ARP) is playing octaves, not chords.

  • Genuinely awesome music.

I cannot understand how the crown can stay still - I'm nearly moshing here :D

  • Damn, this is how tokyo ROCKS!

Place is going off right there!!!

In the US mofos be crowd surfing. LOL

  • Madonna's 'Into the Groove' sounds similar to this great composition by Yellow Magic Orchestra. Just note after 1:15. I won't be surprised if she (or the person who composed it for her) was directly influenced by the rhythm on this track.

  • Similar to SOS 'Just be good to me' as well

  • jajajajaja

  • She was also a very accomplished session musician back then.

  • jaa

  • For all you drum machine enthusiasts out there, this song is one of the first uses of the Roland TR-808, which came out the same year. You can hear the claves and hand claps. As these guys are from Japan (as is Roland), it's possible that the 808 wasn't even available in the United States (where it has become entrenched in popular music) at the time of this performance. I can't find it in the video, though. This is before MIDI came out (1983).

  • You are most likely to be right. Thank-you for that information.

  • Yup, they pretty much had the most high-end gear months before they were to be publicly released. At least, that's what I've come to understand.

  • @fooloof

Thanks for the heads up - nice to hear from other like minded people. Subscribe to my page to listen to some classic analog synths.... :)

  • yeah, this is tight...

  • the chick is getting so into it.

  • Akiko Yano, she's published albums on her own too, also a collaboration with Rei Harakami.

  • The old Mrs Sakamoto

  • Why people keep posting such nasty comments about this brilliant piece of music??? I love it! There's nothing to work with opium here whatsoever. Lots of love to YMO!

  • 当時はymoのライブはこれで結構いいのりでしたよ^^;

  • ok i cant read this

  • This is SO hot!!!!

    I want a 1000 KNIVES t-shirt!!!

  • nasty version, sounds awfull compared to the other more acoustic one thats knocking around here on youtube - that one is the shizzle - this is nasty

  • They are sooo tight, what band today would match this?! I freakin love the base line!!!

  • Greatest japanese orchestra in the world !

  • great dance music! great concepts! great stage!

    great everything!

but, how come the audience is not dancing??

  • Cause it's old school Japan like most said this band WOKE UP Japan...it just took a while.

  • so killer!

  • Beautiful! YMO is the master. If only bands like them would exist nowadays..

  • I AGREE WHOLE HEARTEDLY!!

  • The Nippon Budokan is located in Kitanomaru Park in the center of Tokyo, two minutes' walking distance from Kudanshita Subway Station, and near Yasukuni Shrine. This 42 m (140 ft) high imposing octagonal structure holds 14,201 people (arena seats: 2,762, 1st floor seats: 3,199, 2nd floor seats: 7,760, standee: 480) and is modeled after a hall in Hōryū-ji in Nara.

  • I need opiate to live this rotten world but they never smoke opium...lol

  • If you're talking about the version from BGM, it's not the original! Sakamoto made an album called 1000 Knives before YMO's first album. I haven't heard this real original yet...

  • Sonic Team has lost it. Sigh...

  • Sonic?What they has lost?

  • eww,no...^^;

  • awesome video. thanks for posting it.
