i'm really considering this as my first DSLR camera. i'm a make up artist, so it's important that i get crisp portrait / close up shots. do you think the kit lens is a good lens for portraits? or do your recommend any other lenses for portraits?

the kit lenses is good, also consider the 75-300 mm is not expensive :) for sure extra-batteries too!!

dude , DSLR's are made so that u can change the lenses, i suppose its personal preference ,and canon advertises whaaaaaay to much, i prefer nikon aswell :)

the xt and the xti. is a great camera for ebayers and general use. the canon ef 28mm 1:2.8 and the canon ef 50mm 1:1.8 is a must have for this camera. they are cheapest among the canon line up that give the best results!

cause i know where you can get the camera plus 18~55mm lens for 450 and the body for 250

yeah its the same thing as the 400d they just have different names in other countries

as far as I know, you can get the body, plus an 18-55mm and a 75-300mm for 899 flat.

everyone thinks the nikon D40 is the best because it's been advertised so much. feature-for-feature, picture-for-picture, the olympus E-510 as wells this canon xti are far better.

For a beginner the Sony and Olympus are simplest, therefore most ideal, however if your skills develop and you wish to upgrade lenses there is not much scope to upgrade here.

The canon and nikon have a wide range of lenses and accesories if you wish to upgrade. The user comunity is larger and therefore more helpful for these cameras.

On price alone the 400D wins. They are both very capable and it mostly comes down to preference.

Just bought this camera... used the old film Rebel for years and have gone through numerous lower quality digitals... very happy with the XTi.. amazed how fast it takes shots.. can click away almost as fast as I can and it keeps on goin... and the shutter sounds nice.
