  • I frequently travel through S.E. Colorado and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas; if you pay attention you can still see the lasting results of the dusters. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it must have been and I have often wondered, while making my way down highway 287/385, if folks today could survive such a disaster.

  • I remember Black Sunday in 1935. As a boy I helped my Parents put wet rags over the windows and doors, it slowed the dust down, but made a muddy mess at the door.

My father got work with the CCC to help wih the tree planting and built several lakes in the Kansas area. The farm was restarted about 1941.

The Great Depression didn't help as well.

  • @MrCraig1930 You must be at least 85?

  • god bless them

  • This is a very well done video! neet to see a 1925 Dodge Brothers Sadan! at 1:44 I Own one just like it I named it "Scrappy" after Harold " Scrappy" Lambert. one of my favorit 1920s singers. My Other Dodge is a 1926 named Rusty!

  • Sounds Like you have quite a collection of cars...would love to see them, I bet they are amazing! :-)

  • WOW! Can't wait to share this with my 4th grade class. It really brings history alive with such wonderful slides. Thank you!

  • I will say this about the dust bowl. My grandfather lived through it and he said it can be summed up this way "During the dust bowl years the men where men and the boys where turned into men those who died during the dust had it better then men who had to live through watching there land blow away."

  • I tell you, back in 2006 we all thought we were going to have another dust bowl here in Oklahoma. The following year's rain season brought two years worth of rain in one spring.

The rivers swelled and flooded all the bottom lands. The winter of 2007 brought the worst ice storm in recorded history. It's been over a year and I still don't have my 15 acres of woods passable yet. Just goes to show you, God is in control, not me.

  • very nice job....I just finished reading a book about the dust bowl years called "The Worst Hard Time" which I would highly recommend. It's just astonishing the amount of hardship they endured, and that anyone was able to survive at all.

  • Thanks for the pictures. I lot of quality people came out of those difficult times. They worked hard. My father came from Oklahoma to escape the dust bowl with his mother, father and two brothers. They slept under bridges as they came west. They all lived a good long life. My father died this year at the age of 86. He was a very humble man. BTW, after the war he went to college and received his masters from Vanderbilt University, he just never mentioned it.

  • Your father and his family show the strength and resilliance of the human spirit. These people knew what they had to do to make their lives better and did it without complaining or expecting someone else to do it for them. Kudos to your Father on his accomplishments - your family has alot to be proud of!

  • nice vid. creepy song though

  • Bob Wills is NOT "Creepy"!

  • Thanks for sharing your family's story with me. In our modern age with all the comforts and conveniences we have, I don't think many of us would have survived or had the resillience to continue on like they did. It's a testement to our past generations. My condolances to you on your mothers passing, and I'm glad you enjoyed watching the video.

  • My grand father was a dairy farmer in OK and lost everthing to the dust. My mom was born in the mid twenties and lived through the dust bowl. I can not imagine how they kept their sanity . It no doubt affected them for their lifetime on earth. My mom passed away today and it has taken all these years for me to finally totaly understand her ways. Thanks for posting this.
