  • what about if your engine DOESN'T start at all...

but still having spark but not at the right time...

  • oh dont start the car in a confined space. make sure you have good ventlation

  • ALRIGHT IM READY TO DO THIS!! I FAILED MY SMOG CUZ OF TIMING IM GONNA DO IT !!!!

  • I've never attempted it thinking it was too hard and finicky but after watching this I feel informed enough to confidently attempt it on my own vehicle...... Still wish me luck! lol Thanks for the informative Vid Appreciated!

  • he should have added, "if your parking brake doesn't work and you know how to set ignition timing, you should probably get your priorities in line then come back in a week or two...or whenever you get your paycheck" :-D

  • not only was this clearly stated, but his moustache instills a sense of the fact i can trust him.

  • FINALLY. That makes sense! Chiltons and Haynes were not making sense to me. My 87 Taurus finally runs properly, not rich, nor lean. THANK YOU!

  • awesome video! Plain and simple!

  • ive never owned a car which has ever had timing marks

  • @paulhunter123

speechless...... how? all cars are REQUIRED to have a timing mark. its a factory mandated feature! infact it might even be a law to have a timing mark, because your smog emissions would be bad and your car will have awful performance without that mark. and your either lieing or your a car noob and doesnt even know what a spark plug is. XD

  • @rebelformetal how dare you!

  • @paulhunter123

you know what dude, i apologize for my comment, you must have owned a later model car that has computer controlled ignition timing. i just realized that only older cars have timing marks. cheers mate

  • i love guys talking technical

  • have someone an idea what happens when the timing is misplaced?

could that be a reason for a shaking engine?

the car is shaking while idling (when its warm)

    what will happen?

  • at 2:20 he kinda looks like Edgar Allan Poe lol

  • 1992? This guy is the Boss.

  • 1992?

  • Some distribitors you do not set with a timing light.Vortec 4.3 and 350 are set with a scan tool.Same with the 1992 and up 3.9,318s and 360 distribitors, not set with a timing light

  • Ahhh, if it were only this easy.

  • and if my car is disturborless?

  • @provehito44 then it most likely is self adjustable by your car's computer unit

  • Dont always trust factory specc's when it comes to a worn engine or modified engine such as cam or heads changes, this will alter the idle speed and optium idle timing. This guy also failed to mention timing advance curves and totel advance.

  • helped me a lot

  • I dont see any marks on the belt, only flash...

  • @limpampoo its a little notch right behind the crankshaft pulley that looks like its not moving when the timing light is shined on it.

  • Very awesome video!

  • I always checked the timing on older vehicles from the 70's that way and wonder if you can do the same thing with the electronic ignition systems with the computer on board? I liked the video very much and the reason I ask is that I have to set the timing on a 1987 S-10 Blazer with a 2.8L engine. The guy who rebuilt the engine didn't know the setting for the engine and told me that I have to get it set. I have a manual for that vehicle and want to know if the timing can be set on it the same?

  • @semco72057 On a lot of GM vehicles from that era, you had to short the A and B terminals on the ALDL connector in order to set base timing, easiest way is a paper clip. On some newer vehicles, you ground a wire, or unplug a wire somewhere.

buddycraigg has a video on here called "setting ignition base timing on a V6 fiero 1of2" that goes over how to do it with a 2.8 V6, probably the same as your Blazer.

As for WHAT the timing should be set at, there should be a sticker in the engine bay.

  • @rwdplz1 Thanks so much for the information. I'm about to order new door seals for the S-10 Blazer, and also window seals since they are shot too. I got this truck new and loved it so much, and got plenty of miles out of that vehicle and still want to get more out of it.

  • I wonder if newer vehicles are this complicated... I have a 1986 Jetta

  • I have no decal :(

  • i think my cars timing is out It starts fine but when I let it Idle it sound like its going to run out of petrol but there is heaps of petrol in it and if I open the throttle right up it stays between 3,500 4,000RPM and the revs go up and down

its a 1991 Subaru Legacy GT If needed I can upload a Vid to youtube to get sum better answers

  • @Panasonicsubs fuel filter

  • @Panasonicsubs The main issue will be the subaru logo stamped into the engine. try taking it to a toyota dealership and trade it in for a real vehicle. failing that push it off a cliff and report it stolen. insurance will pay out more than the low resale value of a poobaru

  • Big problem ! You forgot to mention that the engine needs to be re-timed if you enter a different time zone !

Thankfully I came along to make this gargantuan tip.

  • this video seems a bit old.. but still good food for thought..

  • I dont need to buy anything? for some reason when i did my smog they told me i needed a new part or something, y is that, r they just trying to take money from me that i dont need to pay

  • very informative

  • helped alot many thanks

  • THANKS SOO MUCH

  • There are distribitors out there you do not use a timing light on.Chevy vortec 350s and 4.3s starting in 1996 are this way using a scan tool instead of a timing light

  • Your lucky it started after you moved the distributer that much!

  • Never use a bolt to seal a tube off. I guarantee it will leak. Use round stock
