I don't understand what makes the Canon 500d a great camera and the Nikon d5000 just a 'standard stuff', or is this guy strongly biased towards Canon? I think the CA mode is even more useless than the 'rotating' LCD of the d5000.
If one doesn't want to know what F-stop is one's gonna buy a point-and-shoot not a DSLR. I think the 500d and the d5000 are equally good cameras and the only difference between them is simply just the name of the brand.
does the sensor in the camera heat up after prolonged video sessions and does it degrade the picture quality over time because of constant use of the video mode?
I cant choose between D5000 and EOS 500D. There's quite a price difference for D90 (worth it?). Maybe the price will lower a bit after D3000's out? Initially I wanted Nikon, but it does feel a bit silly to be so stubborn. Also, for D5000, is the "rotating" LCD screen of good use? And the 19 scene modes? Cuz I like how it has the graphic mode, which makes it easier for beginners.
Yea, I got notified when I went to the shop to check the DSLRs out. That's what my mom is worrying all about now, preferring the 500D. Yet personally I prefer the D5000. I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes, the D5000 is said to be out again late this week.
i fel exactly the same although i have owned the d90 which is a very very sweeeeet camera, but i also am a bit stubborn and think with my heart instead of my head but i think im gonna go with the canon, hd recording, 3in screen with 921 pixels, creative auto. lots of same features as the higher end canon dslr's
no they dont have to be image stabilised, as long as it can be connected to the camera, its fine. Its better to have IS in mens cos then u see it in the viewfinder, if its in the camera it does mean it will be cheaper in the long run cos u can buy non IS lenses, but then u will not see what the IS is doing through the viewfinder
I got one today. I compared it to the D90, 40D and 50D:
The 500D has the same sensor as the 50D and the picture quality is equal with both cameras. It is better than that of the 40D. The Nikon 90D is comparable to the 50D. Some tests say the Nikon is better others say the 50D is better. I think the difference in picture quality is really minimal and depends on how you measure it. I looked at sample pictures and intuitively preferred those of the EOS 500D so that made my decision.
Of course the 50D has a few better features. I.e. more AF points, a solid body and custom auto programs. The same may apply to the Nikon but for me all that mattered is picture quality and if I can save 150 to 250 Dollars and have the same pictures then I don't need 11 instead of 9 AF points or a solid body. The only thing I am going to miss a bit is the custom programs but I guess I can live without them.
I have this camera (500d/t1i) and it has one big error. The video keeps "dropping frames" once in a while. Especially in quick pans. It seems like the processor or the chip (20mb/s) is too slow. Anyone else have this problem...?
My advise no need to wait the best dslr are already here the nikon d90 or canon 500d, both have everything you need for taking pictures and HD video coz if you wait nothing much is change basically only the megapixel and more megapixel is not all good actually, first thing more pixel you gotta spend more on a memory card, 2nd it will take a long time processing photos, 3rd more pixel on a small chip is more noise plus picture quality somehow degraded i can go on but this are the major back lash.
capitalism dictates they can charge what people will pay. the price of everything is relative to the demographic. canon would make them for $50, the poms aren't being smashed by the recession as hard as the US, yet... simply put, they charge 850 quid because they can...
Are you serious ? i think there are major improvements.. the sensor is the same as the 50D, HD video mode gonna be a revolution for the DSLR world, 920k screen now looks great, i am just desapointed at the finish quality, the nikon D40 looks way more solid and metal-like than the 450D/500D...
its not the same sensor as the 50D. Its the same quality but it has a sensor that is full of gaps, hence a gap full sensor. its not the same as the 50D and the video is not that good. the 720 is 30fps but the 1080 is only 20fps. and its not full HD its just almost. i'd go for this if the sensor is truely the same as the 50D and the video is Full HD
hahah yeah, i was just exaggerating, i know its not the same, what im getting at is that guy is saying theres hardly no difference. where in fact, for an entry level camera, thats fkn awesome. hopefully the price isnt too bad here in Australia.

For a total newb what's the main advantage to the 500D over the 450D? Is it just the HD video recording or is there more to it?

alitap 2 years ago
@alitap It can heat up but canon has implemented an auto off for that problem, I haven't seen it degrading my images at all either.

Need your advices
i have have a budget that is just enough to buy 500d with kit lens
Should i go with the 500d set or buy the cheaper cam with better lens
I just an amature
thanx in advance

I'd say buy the 18 - 55 Mm lens that's the standard and good for beginners...
Get 55 - 200mm if you take photos of objects far away like airplanes or mountains..

we have the same thought but I bought the Canon Rebel T1(500D).
The reason was Nikon issued a statement that there is a malfunction in some of D5000s and should be send back

D90 is better than the 500d than 500d is better than the d5000.
The "rotating" LCD screen is a bit useless, or for beginner. And the D5000 is a non-motorised reflex, really expensive for what he does.

Both offer superb picture quality... hard to be disappointed with any of these new DLSRs.
Aside from that
For best photo (Picture quality): Any Canon
For best cinematic / Film quality video: Nikon D90.
