T.T I don't give a shit about the ppl dying, but the horses...why did they have to be damn dicks by running into them with the horses....now they have to get brand new horses all over again cuz the perfectly fine horses they had before are dead now. fken foolss
Dont know the date. But the TEMPLARS fought on Scotlands side as KNIGHTS I think after France hunted down the Templars. Those that were still alive from France fled all over Europe. Most went to Portugal? And others went to Great Britain. Only the ELITES in the Templars were recorded? Intresting
If you find out who they are. Props to you! Gave the English a run for their money. Im pretty sure they were under Scotlands command.
back in those days, the fear you get from a British cavalry charge is like tanks coming at you, nothing but respect for those men who fought against it
@techracer2003 The only way this could be less historically accurate is if the Scots had lost. There was no English charge at Sterling Bridge, note the English charge, not the British. This film is stupid, the writers seem to have made it up as they go along. Most importantly, this is the Battle of Sterling Bridge, where's the fucking bridge?
William Wallace would have fought with a Claymore. I don't know why they didn't put that in, because a Highland noble of his stature would often have a sword over four feet long. That would have been sweet to see.
This is how a war should be fought. Not today were civilians are slaughered with cowards dropping bombs and snipers shooting their enemies at 300m distance.
I know what you mean, but war in those days still meant many dead and injured men who could no longer support their families, plus it meant many horses killed or suffering horribly. So rather than say: "This is how a war should be fought", I would ask "should wars be fought at all ..especially with our modern day destructive capabilities?'.
@dcdoyle Back in this time period there was no such thing as Britain; it was England vs Scotland. Nowadays Britain is composed of England, Scotland and Wales so saying who is the British commander in reference to Braveheart makes no sense.
You do realize that when it actually came to the part where the horses made contact with their pikes that they substituted fake horses on hydraulic pistons, right? Using real horses for that sort of thing went out with Cecil B. DeMille.
i was in stirling last week, it was my first trip to scotland, it was soooooo beautiful! the scottish people are so friendly, so kind and felt soo welcome in scotland! i love your country, yes Country! free scotland! william wallace was awesome by the way!
Funny thing at LoTR's last battle 6000 or so rohirim vs 10s of thousens or orks and mordor urukhai is pathetic, no chance in hell that human could win. Is more like a tipical small medieval army vs a fantasy hell. Now if you would trow a few roman legions at them (about 5000 men each), they would rape the orks and Sauron all the way to the end of the world.
Strange that they never featured the bridge, which was a major factor in the battle. From what I remember reading the English got stuck with half their army on one side and were then attacked by the Scots.
Even a trained warhorse won't charge into a wall of spears. That's why pikemen were so effective against cavalry.
Another thing - cavalry were seldom used in frontal attacks - they would wait until the infantry had been engaged - then cavalry would come upon the flank of the enemy and force them to break formation.
Before all of this, each side would exchange arrow barrages. That is the way old wars were fought.
Men died more from injuries and diseases than anything.
@NicholasGeschke i think it MIGHT be posible to force the horse to keep going, but this to me shows what happens if youDO. against a solid pike wall. that said if these cavalry hd been in proper 2 line formation, the scots wold be torn apart by the second wave.
@NicholasGeschke You have to keep in mind that battles were often fought one way, but not always. There have been a few battles with full frontal cavalry charge, but a smart general would usually avoid it. But yeah the horses would refuse to charge that wall.
Anyway, I think they are holding the lances wrong, the horses should have some kind of armour too.
@ivanlagrossemoule True. However, in the novels, Prof. Tolkien closely mirrored the Free People's formations after the English tactics during the 100 Years' War. Particularly the battle of Agincourt, where a numerically inferior army of English troops decisively defeated the French.
Anyways, this clearly demonstrates that Hollywood tends to fluff up the tactics a bit. Probably for dramatic purposes. Make it more "heroic".
it's a good thing my sister never watched this movie. she'd have cried for the horse at 2:00. and the horse at 2:01, and the other one at 2:02. she'd have cried from 2:00 till the end.
Lool the british commander is like "humm... this is gonna be easy... just send the cavalry......................OH SH*T, Those scots are killing all my cavalry, send the infantry quick!!!!!" :D
lolwut...are the english knights wearing lamellar armour ? I'm pretty sure the english had semi plate and mail armour. And didnt knights wear great helms ?
its a shame it didnt happen like this in real life. if it was like this in real life, in an open field the scots; as brave as they were; would have got slaughtered. just because of the sheer amount the english had and the superiority of the army. in real life they ambushed the english on a bridge
@NorthWeezy2010 Whats funny is a suggestion to charge the Scottish army with cavalry in a different place that was more acceptable for horse maneuvering was rejected.
Contrary to the pro-scottish nationalism c.1300s, they were not fighting for freedom but for a succession claim. So Scottish and English 'groups' fought to be oppressed by varying different groups of feudal, largely Norman, nobles and royalty.
But then again when has Mel Gibson movies been influential on peoples thinking...oh wait it has sadly
This was just weak light cavalry, with only 2 ranks of depth. These mounts could never break those lines even witouth the pikes... Stupid tactic? Where they so arrogant?
@TeunisD No. The battle at Stirling was nothing like this, It's amusing to watch, but Mel Gibson's over inflated ego had him commit more historical errors than is even usual for a Hollywood production, and the film shows no understanding what so ever regarding the Scots-English wars of the 14th century.
To start with, the Bruces and the Platagnets were both Norman houses, William Wallace was minor nobility and not a commoner, and I think they forgot the bridge at the Battle at Stirling Bridge.
edward 1 raped scotland like his woman the sad bastard, then made the claim for the throne into some sort of duck duck goose game. no wonder this happened.
yes some of this movie is historically inacurate, like them painting there faces blue and wearing kilts, but the sticks that they used hear are exactly what they used.
I agree that this movie is very historically inaccurate, but imagine how much it did for the Scottish tourist industry, and how many Americans suddenly claimed Scottish ancestry.
@TheDemonstrater Right, because the fact that my mum immigrated from Scotland in '71 and that I lived in Glasgow for 5+ years had nothing to do with it, amirite?
this is very inaccurate what happend at the battle of sterling bridge is the Earl of suarry - english - was a idiot ( no offense ) after half of the english men crossed "stirling bridge" the Earl has called them back as he had a late breakfast a scottish noble man who was on the english side fighting against wallace had suggested that they could use a ford to cross the caverly up stream but the Earl declined after 1 third crossed the scots attacked as the ground was marshy so caverlry had failed
OK so maybe the English thought the Scots were so inferior they could pull an Iraqi 93 Easting on them, but the theory remains the same. The English commander deserved his head on a stick for this foolishness.
An incredibly inept use of such a force of armored cavalry... strong as they can be, you just don't charge a mobile armored group directly into the teeth of prepared defenses. That as applies as much to modern day as it did then. You occupy the enemy frontally with infantry etc. and then use armored/cavalry to hit them on the flanks or rear (first breaking through a weak point or going the long way around if necessary). A battle is usually over at that point.
*Several horses were killed during the making of this film* ;]
