I can't say how common it is, but the key is to elevate their food and water dishes, and feed them 2 small meals a day instead of 1 main meal. I have two danes, almost three years old. My husband built them a trough that holds their food and water dishes, and it's 2-3 feet from the groud, with a roof and everything!
If you do research and feed the correct diet the correct way you actually won't have to worry about it too much.
It just takes alot of knowledge, research, and patience to do as much work preparing food for them. If you can do it, they are AMAZING dogs....My pup is 5 mos old, and pretty much the calmest dog we have. I'll never get another breed....I'm hooked!

on Easter Sunday my great dane , Ruckus, ( perfect name ) sat on my face! Thank god my mom was there cuz i couldn't breath. They are crazy!!!

I don't think it is super common, i hav only ever heard of it happening 2 or 3 times but when it does happen it isn't always fatal
