those blowers are real... gear drive... that two stroke won't run w/o them... at the bottom of the piston stroke there are ports around the  bottom of the cyl... fresh air enters the cly, all 4 exhaust valves are open. The exhaust valves close, just before the intake ports are covered by the piston, now the compression begins. in those old skool diesels, the comp ratio is close to 20:1.

The scoops on the blowers are more for show than anything else... but they are functional. And it's cool.

@louswire the scoops on the blowers are not for show, the butterflies on them allow the drivers to shut off air to the engine in case it starts running often its own oil (it will run all on its own) the builder removed the origional safety air shutoff.

No those are real. All internal gearing on the detroits. They dont look like that factory though.

They are gear driven on those engines. That engine will not run without it's blowers. Learn about Detroit 2 cycle/2 stroke diesels and you will understand them. That engine is a 12V71 Detroit Diesel.
