@durianriders lol i still find you guys hilarious, you guys dont have any idea that spearfishing is actually about the most humane way of harvesting, because most fishermen use longlines so there is massive amounts of bycatch. and the fish pretty much freeze to death, so really with spearfishing, you can pick what fish you want to shoot and harvest, and if you get good you can hit their spinal chord on about half to 3 quarters of your shots therefore killing them instantly

The small shark at the beginning is a nurse... the one later in the video IS a bull. Trust me- it harassed us for nearly an hour while I was trying to get a speared black out from under that coral head.... and please for your own safety learn to tell the difference! Those bulls are the meanest thing in the ocean....
No, it's not a protected area. You've obviously never speared hogfish before... if you know where to find them, they're pretty easy to shoot. Most of the time we actually just use pole spears or Hawaiian Slings to make it more challenging. Don't worry, trying to find a legal black grouper or big mutton snapper while freediving in the Keys is plenty challenging enough to make up for it... they're spooky as hell!

im guessing your on the atlantic side of marathon but i was wondering if hawks channels is a good place to start if your beginning i know it relatively shallow like 15 to 20 ft
That's where I learned, there honestly aren't many legal grouper or hogfish on the Hawks Channel humps but they're great spots to start learning on. All the grunts, porkfish, and 10" mangroves you'd ever want to shoot. Great spot to learn fish identification and start learning to judge size underwater- plus lots of nice reef fish and coral to look at. Depth ranges from about 8-30 ft, start shallow and take your time learning to dive and hunt deeper, remember freediving can be dangerous!!
can u get grouper in 20 ft? casue i jus started free diving so im not tht good yet, cause we went to tah keys in june, but it was to rough to dolphin fish so i got me a gun, and gota buncha mangrove snapper. thts all
Nothing wrong with a bunch of mangroves! You gotta start somewhere, mangroves and grunts are fine! And if you ever find a school of spadefish, shoot em up! The meat is nasty looking purple-ish but they taste AWESOME fried!
As for grouper, you can get them in 15-20 ft but you've gotta be careful, 95% of the grouper you see in shallow water will not be legal. You start seeing a lot more legal blacks in 50-60 ft water....
Ya that was a rad shot on that hogfish. Never spearfished in florida but those hogfish kinda remind me of the sheepshead here in san diego that warm water must be nice haha its not too bad here though
Funny, I actually just moved to San Diego! Haven't speared here yet, have gone freediving one time so far but it was in the LaJolla reserve. The water temp is ok but the 10ft vis sucks!
There may be a few boats that will do spearing charters, but it's kind of a hard sport for new people to break into without some real dedication.... you can't just have someone motor you out, put a pole in your hand, and then tell you if the fish you catch are legal. You have to learn all the legal fish species and learn to judge legal size underwater, which can be very difficult sometimes. Also, the sport of freediving itself can be very dangerous... Try A Deep Blue Dive in Marathon, maybe!

They're all over, but you gotta know where to look! They can be found on the primary reefs and humps but the real honey holes are right in the middle of nowhere- you gotta be lucky to stumble across a good spot or get some decent pointers from someone.

Camera was a Pentax Optio W60, says it's waterproof to 13ft but Ive taken it to 20 a lot of times.... not great footage but I just go a GoPro HD that'll be my next camera whenever I get to get back in the water!

A fish in 100ft of water out of my diving range has a hell of a lot better "chance" that one presented with a chunk of dead squid by any jackball with a rod/reel (or worse, an electric reel!)

The small shark at the beginning is a nurse... the one later in the video IS a bull. Trust me- it harassed us for nearly an hour while I was trying to get a speared black out from under that coral head.... and please for your own safety learn to tell the difference! Those bulls are the meanest thing in the ocean....

No, it's not a protected area. You've obviously never speared hogfish before... if you know where to find them, they're pretty easy to shoot. Most of the time we actually just use pole spears or Hawaiian Slings to make it more challenging. Don't worry, trying to find a legal black grouper or big mutton snapper while freediving in the Keys is plenty challenging enough to make up for it... they're spooky as hell!

im guessing your on the atlantic side of marathon but i was wondering if hawks channels is a good place to start if your beginning i know it relatively shallow like 15 to 20 ft

That's where I learned, there honestly aren't many legal grouper or hogfish on the Hawks Channel humps but they're great spots to start learning on. All the grunts, porkfish, and 10" mangroves you'd ever want to shoot. Great spot to learn fish identification and start learning to judge size underwater- plus lots of nice reef fish and coral to look at. Depth ranges from about 8-30 ft, start shallow and take your time learning to dive and hunt deeper, remember freediving can be dangerous!!

can u get grouper in 20 ft? casue i jus started free diving so im not tht good yet, cause we went to tah keys in june, but it was to rough to dolphin fish so i got me a gun, and gota buncha mangrove snapper. thts all

Nothing wrong with a bunch of mangroves! You gotta start somewhere, mangroves and grunts are fine! And if you ever find a school of spadefish, shoot em up! The meat is nasty looking purple-ish but they taste AWESOME fried!
As for grouper, you can get them in 15-20 ft but you've gotta be careful, 95% of the grouper you see in shallow water will not be legal. You start seeing a lot more legal blacks in 50-60 ft water....

Anywhere from 5 ft to 60 ft, and 1/4 mile to 15 miles out... not that that narrows it down much!

Ya that was a rad shot on that hogfish. Never spearfished in florida but those hogfish kinda remind me of the sheepshead here in san diego that warm water must be nice haha its not too bad here though

Funny, I actually just moved to San Diego! Haven't speared here yet, have gone freediving one time so far but it was in the LaJolla reserve. The water temp is ok but the 10ft vis sucks!

There may be a few boats that will do spearing charters, but it's kind of a hard sport for new people to break into without some real dedication.... you can't just have someone motor you out, put a pole in your hand, and then tell you if the fish you catch are legal. You have to learn all the legal fish species and learn to judge legal size underwater, which can be very difficult sometimes. Also, the sport of freediving itself can be very dangerous... Try A Deep Blue Dive in Marathon, maybe!

Thanks for the reply. I'm a padi certified diver btw, I forgot to include that in my previous response.
I've never spearfished before and I thought it would be something new to try. Thanks for the advice man. I'll visit a few dive shops when I get there and see what I can find out.

They're all over, but you gotta know where to look! They can be found on the primary reefs and humps but the real honey holes are right in the middle of nowhere- you gotta be lucky to stumble across a good spot or get some decent pointers from someone.

We go anywhere, some spots are right off shore, some on the reefs 3 mi or so, and some WAY out there on the bayside... lots of water out there!

Camera was a Pentax Optio W60, says it's waterproof to 13ft but Ive taken it to 20 a lot of times.... not great footage but I just go a GoPro HD that'll be my next camera whenever I get to get back in the water!

I take it you've never tried it then? Put down your beer, learn to hold your breath and risk shallow water blackout, get in the water and then get back to us on that... A fish in 100ft of water out of my diving range has a hell of a lot better "chance" that one presented with a chunk of dead squid by any jackball with a rod/reel (or worse, an electric reel!)
