  • Anyone possibly know tabs for this? I would love to cover it!

  • I fucking adore this song. I can't stand the original. Kudos to demoncleaner for his great comment though.

  • Fucking fabulous.

Still remember the first time i heard this........ :)

  • The bassist was my history teacher - Kim Coletta

  • This is awesome. You bet your life it is.

  • Factoid: in 1994 Atlantic Records put out a promotional compilation CD "Spew 5" on which Jawbox's "Savory" appeared with Tori Amos' "Cornflake Girl." Perhaps this is where Jawbox got the idea of covering "Cornflake Girl."

  • to everyone bitching about how Jawbox butchered a Tori Amos song--consider it payback for the way she butchered Smells Like Teen Spirit.

  • @demoncleaner45 yes. yes. and yes.

  • @demoncleaner45 looser you, it is not because she did it more emotional and slow that she butchered it. you don't know how to open you ears the right way.

  • if any of you fucks lived through the eighties, and THEN the ninetys, then you, like myself, would think this is the sheite! But I'm just bias (LOOOOVE me some Jawbox!)

  • @gokhanthesilencer

ok so it may not be the same as the tori amos vertion. isnt that what makes a good cover?. if it was a exact copy of tori amo's vertion you would complain because it sounded to simalar. to be fair have you even ever heard a jawbox song other than this?

  • @gokhanthesilencer actually, they probably have a lot of respect for Tori Amos... That is why most artists cover others. People who bellow along with their favourite artist even though they are tone deaf doesn't mean they "don't have respect for the artist".

To that, I'm not saying Jawbox is like that, to the contrary I think they did a great job with the cover. They didn't make it sound exactly the same, nor did they bastardize it.

  • i've heard really bad reviews about this version, but it's not so bad

  • it's not a horrible cover.... i just found myself wanting to slap him on the back to spit out the lyrics, what's up with all the pausing???

  • galīgi garām

  • poor drummer at the end. all he got to take into that little room was his hi-hats.

  • horrible

  • Comment removed

  • to the tori fans, she herself says in interviews (as when questioned about her cover album: strange little girls) that taking a song and making it your own is the thing and slowing down and speeding up is all just part of what makes music amazing. listen to any live concert of any band you like and very few sound like the perfection of studio, except for jawbreaker saw them and jawbox on tour back in the day.... jawbreaker: sounds great, looks boring. jawbox: just plain amazing. tori? ♡

  • The song is inspired by the book possessing the secret of joy. which, contextually speaking, is about female genital mutilation. "cornflake girls" and "raisin girls" were descriptives for the narrow minded and enlightened, respectively. so i am left to wonder how that fits into this cover of the song.

  • @SkotFischer :), Oh and Tori did it better..

  • I find it hard to get into the song, all I can think about it's the singers timing in the verses...

  • @Sweetforthesoul I totally agree. I keep expecting the great timing to go with the song, and then the singer hits early and I'm like "wtf? Are you trying to speed up the song or something?" I personally think Tori's pauses made it really interesting, so hearing them taken away makes it sound weird to me.

  • @Sweetforthesoul this song was made familiar to my by jawbox first (since i'm awesome and grew up on the DC post punk scene) so the timing thing doesn't bother me...also- i can understand basic math. ;)

  • @FistsOfTime I understand, the first time you hear a song is always the correct way :p Even though it's a cover!

    Basic math? Sorry, don't follow..

  • @Sweetforthesoul: the verses alternate between 4 and 7, which is why the timing sounds strange to you.

  • @symmetrymatty Ah OK ;p Well, if I don't get caught up on the rhytm I think you did a good job :D

  • I definitely like this. In fact, i might even prefer this to some of Tori's live performances of this song,

But it doesn't come close to Tori's studio version with the backing vocals/clear piano....

  • god bless 21st century technology & curse 21st century (shitty) music. damn, i really miss the latest 20th century music...

  • This is one of the best covers ever. Insanely good. Funny that one of my other favorite covers is by another DC band Shudder To Think.

  • @FishRock77

    Crosstown Traffic?

  • greats!!

  • I'm a huge Tori fan and I don't normally like covers... But I do have to say this is great :)

  • @rachbobach: It's Jawbox - of course it's great. If they covered Jedward it would sound like genius.

  • This is no doubt better than the original. Just watched her (Tori Amos) preform it live on Letterman circa '94, not feelin' it.

  • @Rilez47 CD and music video quality trumps live sets most of the time. Not to say this is a bad cover, just her video seems to be a better take, imo.

  • awesome cover!

  • totally awful

  • Comment removed

  • this song is no good what so ever

  • It's not bad...but it's not as good as Tori's. There's no beating her high register on "YOU BETCHYOUR LIIIIIFE IT IS!!!"

  • I like this one more then tori's XD!

  • oh my goodness no.

  • @xtraordinarymachine0 sorry i just like it a little more rougher it sounds better to me like this :P

  • just saw em on jimmy fallon...fuckin a!

  • they gave an awesome performance

  • ms colleta is my substitute teacher.

  • are you serious? wow. She's amazing. she used to own a great little label called Desoto records. She has signed really great bands like Juno and Dismemberment Plan.

  • @alejandro15187 Oh shit Dismemberment Plan? Bitchin!

  • can't wait to see Jawbox play on the Jimmy Fallon show.

  • December 8, 2009. Set your DVR now people!

  • i still enjoy tori's more.....

  • Oh god no, Panoply. I had a listen to that version and it's just a rubbish faux goth Lacuna Coil/Evanescene bollocks version where as this version is excellent.

  • Best thing is that its possibly their worst song even though the covers class...ha..ha....bring forth the consolation prize

  • Why is it that people insist on comparing ALL rock bands with female vocalists to Evanescence? Just because theyre all female doesnt mean you can lump them into the same group... Both of the covers are decent, although this version is pretty poor quality, unfortunately...

  • J Robbins is a fantastic rock vocalist, IMO, and I love their treatment of the song. I would give a listen to the actual recording, though, and not just go by the video here, as the audio quality naturally blows

  • Hey. I have only a few words for you. Two, in fact. FUCK. YOU. J. Robbins has one of the best voices in the business.

  • women around the world scream! just kidding, this is an amazing cover. One of my DC favorites!

  • Killer cover. Done uniquely

  • u r a horrible insult to humanity :D

  • why thank you ;)

  • Understand that you do not speak for Tori Amos. She liked this version enough to provide backup vocals (after 3:05). Look it up...

  • Timing isn't awesome and some of the lyrics are off, but it's still cool.

  • i don't like the timing but the music is okay.. Tori Amos version is much better

  • AWESOME ! never tought of checking if there was a video for this song! very good cover.

  • I have always felt as though the singer from Jawbox sounds a lot like Greg Gaffin (Bad Religion), especially in this song.

  • classic

  • moldy fucking cheese!

  • I didnt even realise this was a cover until months after id heard it!

If you like this band, also check out Far

  • Agreed.Far is just another awesome band from the 90's...and don't forget quicksand.

  • Awesome, Quicksand rocks! And there's always Hum.

  • Jawbox made some of the best music and worst vidios in the early 90s

  • it wasn't horrible!

  • they made this song punk rock so it sounds bad and some of the lyrics are diffrent so it makes it more diffrent still tori amos is the best!

  • are kim and bill playing ibanez in this vid?

  • I think I remember them both playing Schecter around the time of this video, at least live.

  • actually im a huge Tori fan and (beside "peel out the watchword" part, they totally fucked it up ; O) i quite enjoyed listening to this version ;)

  • i dont think this version adds anything to the song, the original version has a lot more drive and rythm, better musicians and production, jawbox make this tune sound really bad. goes to show how good tori amos and the people she works with are at their thing

    greetings from the troll

  • Holy shit , these people made real music! I know this is not their song but I have all of their cd 's and they put out a hell of a effort in writting their material! Their 1st cd ranks! It's all killer musicians music with hooks... unbelievalbe. And I missed them when they passed through my town back when.

  • how does this girl get such a good bass tone?

  • any tori fans out there who got into jawbox after hearing this cover?

  • Comment removed

  • good stuff

  • Fucked up time signature. Love it.

  • I thought this was gonna be the shit and I was right

  • Quoted for truth.........Tapping the vein kicks it with this. More than jawbox

  • hahaha. Yes, I do love the TtV version as well...but judging from my two thumbs down there, people don't seem to realize the "THE" before the word "shit". As in, I love this and thinks it's great.

    But what can I do.

Seriously though, Tapping is great too, I've just been a diehard Jawbox guy for a looong time.

  • i thought this was gonna be shit but it's actually pretty amazing.

  • The thing that makes the song Cornflake Girl brilliant to me is the stunning piano solo. Being that there is no piano in this version, obviously, I would have expected to hate it. But it's actually amazing. I'm sure Tori would like it as well. They're both equally perfect. I am a die hard Tori fan, and I can't even say which version I prefer, which means this is a brilliant cover in my opinion. Thank God they didn't try to copy her or it would have been a disaster.

  • The inspiration came from Alice Walker's novel Possessing the Secret of Joy, about a young African woman going through the ritual of female genital cutting. Amos was angered by the idea that a mother could subject her daughter to such a brutal act, and the song arose as an exploration of the idea of betrayal between women."Raisin Girls" are "multicultural" and open-minded while the "Cornflake Girls" are "narrowminded and full of prejudice".

  • It's JAWBOX...They did a great job covering this song. Have you heard the other covers that they have done. They took the song and owned it. If your a Tori fan you may not like it, but if you are a JAWBOX fan it fits right in!

  • Well I guess she has two meanings. Cause all the interviews she says its about backstabbers more or less. However all her songs can have SO MANY different meanings. That is why I LOVE them and HERRRR!!!

  • What the fuck are you talking about?!

It is about backstabbers (cornflake girls). She even explains that herself.

  • Its always a problem when you know the original version. So yes, I prefer Toris version. It sounds more energetic, I miss that. But I appreciate what they did with it. It's different, and that's how a good cover should sound. The double voices in the end are cool.

  • ha!!! i always thought this was an odd cover (not being a tori fan) but they totally "jawbox-ticized" it, of course...i miss them so much!!

i love the part at the end where they're in their separate rooms...remind me of spinal tap doing "rock and roll creation!"

  • yeh not bad theres just so many variatios to a song that it's really interesting to see them flung through different styles...some may not work as well but hey RULES ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN!!!

  • jawbox = math rock \o/

  • Sometimes the cover just rises above and beyond. Full credits to the originators but I still prefer Tori's version.

  • i'd like to lick her bass strings

  • I liked Tori's version, so it was a nice surprise when I got this CD back when it was new and found this excellent cover version hidden at the end. Cool to find a video for it as well.

  • Such a cover. Sometimes I actually love my hometown.

  • I'm keaping the original one, really.

  • RAWKS!

  • One of the best band ever!

  • ah it's Jawbox....always awesome.

  • zombies, youve got dam good vids!

  • It really does suck that I can't embed this in my facebook page. :-P

  • It sounds OK, but I don't like the timming! (that's to bad) the version of Tori, my opinion, is better. but I'm a Huge Tori fan so thats not a surpris!

  • I love jawbox

  • I'm not one for covers, Hendrix being one of the exceptions as well as this nugget. I'm not even into Amos but this truly shines. Had no clue that a video was ever made for this.

  • WOOHOOOO how cool is that please...speachless!!!!! BEST COVER!!

  • Dude...that's the original.Tori Amos covered it.

  • Really? Oh, my fault...yeah you're right...Tori released it in 1994 and Jawbox in 1996...it's so obvious...and hey scan the credits (music + words: Tori Amos) but that must be a lie...I hate the music industry...and the girl in the kollegs-spot was not Tori...it was the lead singer of Jawbox

  • I meant Kolleg's-Commerical

  • the track that got me meathooked

  • I like both versions and Tori's piano solo kicks ass. Picked up Jawbox's FATAL ACCIDENTS last week, its amazing stuff.

  • one of my all time favorites

  • 2 bars of 4, 1 bar of 7...nice touch. Tori Amos also does this. Kim C is cute here...good band.

  • hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm............. wtf

  • Great song.

  • hmm. nice but. fucking skinheads. Where's the fallLLSETTOOO!!!! sing HIGH!

  • Very interesting... Funny seeing a dude singing "Never was a Cornflake GIRL", hehe... Nifty take, prefer the Tapping The Vein version from "Songs of a Goddess", myself, that is harsh and wicked. The wierd offbeat part kinda throws me off, though I see what they were going for.

  • throws YOU off?

how do you think the band feels!

  • This version funking rules!! Jawbox rules!! Tori is great too, but she can't rock this hard.

  • Apparently those who don't listen to Jawbox obviously don't realize their tendency to play some kick-ass off-time signatures. This song is perfectly timed for the effect they are trying to create.

  • this is soo good.

  • hmmm. not sure about this. no question tori rules this song. i think the timin was a pretty poor effort to make it original whilst still robbing her. failed. but i guess its not a bad listen.. once! haha! ok im done

  • I'm pretty sure they arranged the timing. Most of their songs (covered or original) follow that scheme. I do love the fact that you incorporated the word "whilst" into your commentary, though :)

  • killed it. the timing they have is sooo fucking off.

  • they did that intentionally. whats the use of playing the song exactly how tori played it? Likewise as tori covered Nirvana's "teen spirit". what makes jawbox so good is their ability to utilize odd time signatures.

  • That's why I love this band, their unique time signatures.

  • Jawbox own Tori.

  • Bleah. Jawbox got nothin on Tori.

  • anybody need jawbox mp3's i got everything. Best band ever!

  • Jawbox rule....I hadn't even heard of them till today.lol

  • the compelation...wat myscrapbookof fatal accident. -that doesnt have it

  • I've never seen this.Nice to see this after all these years. Excellent video!

  • yeah i know but the self titled album is discontinued :@ anyone know why?

  • not sure. might be re-issued. i know the compilation has this song on. it was re-issued, so you shouldn't have trouble finding it.

  • i never heard the tori amos one but this is nice and jawboxish anyway... how the hell do i get this album?!!

  • it's the hidden track on their self-titled album, i believe.

  • I lyk it...it's very different, but theyr tres good, the lyrics are a lil different i think, but hey.

  • awesome

  • TIIIIIIIIIIIGHT! This version is so much better then Tori Amos'

  • uhhh... okay. it'a a different take on it, definitely. i wish they would've at least got the lyrics right. i'm so used to her piano, this was very different.
