Factoid: in 1994 Atlantic Records put out a promotional compilation CD "Spew 5" on which Jawbox's "Savory" appeared with Tori Amos' "Cornflake Girl." Perhaps this is where Jawbox got the idea of covering "Cornflake Girl."
@demoncleaner45 looser you, it is not because she did it more emotional and slow that she butchered it. you don't know how to open you ears the right way.
if any of you fucks lived through the eighties, and THEN the ninetys, then you, like myself, would think this is the sheite! But I'm just bias (LOOOOVE me some Jawbox!)
ok so it may not be the same as the tori amos vertion. isnt that what makes a good cover?. if it was a exact copy of tori amo's vertion you would complain because it sounded to simalar. to be fair have you even ever heard a jawbox song other than this?
@gokhanthesilencer actually, they probably have a lot of respect for Tori Amos... That is why most artists cover others. People who bellow along with their favourite artist even though they are tone deaf doesn't mean they "don't have respect for the artist".
To that, I'm not saying Jawbox is like that, to the contrary I think they did a great job with the cover. They didn't make it sound exactly the same, nor did they bastardize it.
to the tori fans, she herself says in interviews (as when questioned about her cover album: strange little girls) that taking a song and making it your own is the thing and slowing down and speeding up is all just part of what makes music amazing. listen to any live concert of any band you like and very few sound like the perfection of studio, except for jawbreaker saw them and jawbox on tour back in the day.... jawbreaker: sounds great, looks boring. jawbox: just plain amazing. tori? ♡
The song is inspired by the book possessing the secret of joy. which, contextually speaking, is about female genital mutilation. "cornflake girls" and "raisin girls" were descriptives for the narrow minded and enlightened, respectively. so i am left to wonder how that fits into this cover of the song.
@Sweetforthesoul I totally agree. I keep expecting the great timing to go with the song, and then the singer hits early and I'm like "wtf? Are you trying to speed up the song or something?" I personally think Tori's pauses made it really interesting, so hearing them taken away makes it sound weird to me.
@Sweetforthesoul this song was made familiar to my by jawbox first (since i'm awesome and grew up on the DC post punk scene) so the timing thing doesn't bother me...also- i can understand basic math. ;)
are you serious? wow. She's amazing. she used to own a great little label called Desoto records. She has signed really great bands like Juno and Dismemberment Plan.
Oh god no, Panoply. I had a listen to that version and it's just a rubbish faux goth Lacuna Coil/Evanescene bollocks version where as this version is excellent.
Why is it that people insist on comparing ALL rock bands with female vocalists to Evanescence? Just because theyre all female doesnt mean you can lump them into the same group... Both of the covers are decent, although this version is pretty poor quality, unfortunately...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy just cannot sing at all, and they hardly did anything with the song. for a good cover of this song, check out the version by Tapping The Vein. now THAT'S some crazeh shit.
J Robbins is a fantastic rock vocalist, IMO, and I love their treatment of the song. I would give a listen to the actual recording, though, and not just go by the video here, as the audio quality naturally blows
i dont think this version adds anything to the song, the original version has a lot more drive and rythm, better musicians and production, jawbox make this tune sound really bad. goes to show how good tori amos and the people she works with are at their thing
Holy shit , these people made real music! I know this is not their song but I have all of their cd 's and they put out a hell of a effort in writting their material! Their 1st cd ranks! It's all killer musicians music with hooks... unbelievalbe. And I missed them when they passed through my town back when.
hahaha. Yes, I do love the TtV version as well...but judging from my two thumbs down there, people don't seem to realize the "THE" before the word "shit". As in, I love this and thinks it's great.
But what can I do.
Seriously though, Tapping is great too, I've just been a diehard Jawbox guy for a looong time.
The thing that makes the song Cornflake Girl brilliant to me is the stunning piano solo. Being that there is no piano in this version, obviously, I would have expected to hate it. But it's actually amazing. I'm sure Tori would like it as well. They're both equally perfect. I am a die hard Tori fan, and I can't even say which version I prefer, which means this is a brilliant cover in my opinion. Thank God they didn't try to copy her or it would have been a disaster.
The inspiration came from Alice Walker's novel Possessing the Secret of Joy, about a young African woman going through the ritual of female genital cutting. Amos was angered by the idea that a mother could subject her daughter to such a brutal act, and the song arose as an exploration of the idea of betrayal between women."Raisin Girls" are "multicultural" and open-minded while the "Cornflake Girls" are "narrowminded and full of prejudice".
It's JAWBOX...They did a great job covering this song. Have you heard the other covers that they have done. They took the song and owned it. If your a Tori fan you may not like it, but if you are a JAWBOX fan it fits right in!
