I think I finally know why John wanted Gnat. She didn't challenge him. You heard her, she accepted him just the way he was. She didn't help him to evolve into a better person, to try to new things, to live on a higher level. Gnat didn't do anything except to feed into the person John already was. Gnat constantly put herself in dangerous situations and John always had to rescue her. Gnat was easy. Evangeline wasn't and John couldn't handle her. John loved Van the most and that scared him.

The writers and producers broke up John/Van. Now had Van tell Natalie the truth about herself and how she went after John!!!! Natalie cannot act and sooooo fake!!!!
I loved Vange and JoVan. That was a very adult relationship, whereas Nat seemed so juvenile with him. And I love how Vange caught that hand. I think she would've won, lol.
