  • Screw all these safety nuts! I've been sawing down trees and sawing them up on my saw mill for years. I wear flip flops, shorts, and a tee shirt. I also drink beer while doing those things! I can't stand listening to these OSHA loving safety nuts.

P.S. I still have all my fingers and all my toes. Though I did get a splinter once.

  • @BrianStocking, a kindred spirit. I would love to visit your set up some time in Florida. Sounds like a blast!!!

  • Haters gonna hate

  • lathe abuthe!

Hey, Matt, have you ever seen "Stapler Fahrer Klaus"? Look for "German Forklift Training Video(funny)" on youtube and you may wish to create your own safety video for high schools called "Mr. Matt: Shop Teacher Gone?(wild)" .

  • You should probably run the lathe at a slower speed until the work piece becomes round and therefore balanced. You're tearing up the lathe by running so fast and out of balance. Also, the tool rest needs to be attached more securely. The way you have it, you might never actually get to roundness since the tool is allowed to follow the profile of the wood.

  • you are extremely fortunate that you didn't kill yourself. I had a small bowl fly off my lathe and crack me in the head. That along with a fair amount of blood taught me a lesson. turn down the speed and quit acting like some kind of "fonzie the wood turner" If that big piece of wood had of flown off the lathe, it would have killed you.

  • You want to rough out a big piece like that at much slower speed...that was around 500 rpm, you needed maybe 100 rpm to start, then increase the revs once it is round and balanced. Nice piece of wood.

  • Why don't you find another hobby rather than give real woodturners a bad image?

  • Wow, you truly have no common sense or any idea what the hell you are doing. As well, you are abusing the hell out of the lathe and it's bearings! You've probably done a fair amount of damage and don't even know it!

When a lathe that big is rocking that bad from an off-balance piece, you are just destroying the bearings and stressing everything to the max.

And the face shield is to protect you from large chucks that fly off, not the whole log. If you hold it properly, that won't happen.

  • Insert favorite pejorative here. Scary video indeed.

  • I used to run OD and surface grinders. What you did mate, was very dangerous. Please don't do that again. Cheers.

  • Pair of wankers. Dumb being led by dumber. I just hope it is them that gets killed not some bystander.

  • Кто этого дыбила учил так резец держать?И что он хочет из этого изготовить? Загнивающая цывилизацыя!!!

  • The Sign said Danger Stay Clear, It meant Him not the Lathe

  • This indeed is a prime example of what NOT to do. Yes the RPMs are way high. Spinning that large of an unstable piece is not only unsafe but damaging to the tool, which appears to be an expensive commercial grade lathe. Do you own this tool? Are you responsible for it? You say you were a HS shop teacher???? Also, in your tags you mention pints of guinness? Way too many fails going on here.

  • Actually im not concerned for the guy, he'll live, im concerned for the headstocks spindle bearings :-D

  • Frankly I am THANKFUL this young man and others like him are our future. With what we most likely will be facing, we sure don't need no by the booker, panty waist, too afraid to ever take a risk (even silly ones), or people too whimpy to ever dare live life-taste death. Just as many "safety Bob" types get killed ever day as us insane dare devils. Be sure to take as many wild and crazy memories into your old age as you possibly can. You won't regret it.

    Granny W.

  • ROLLLLLLLING LAUGHING !!!! LOVED IT!!! You guys hush that can't appreciate this young man's taking on that log without ever touching a lathe in his life.

My favorite part was his "body language" LMAO !!!!! Go back and watch it again and note how he was indeed scared but he darned sure wasn't going to run...LOL Have to show this to my sons, they will crack up too.

Thank You for making me run to the tinkle room from laughing so hard.

    Granny Wallace (still LMAO !!)

  • i can´t watch.

  • speed wasn't too high, atitude might be. he has gotten a bit better since then and with a disconnected tool rest and the lathe wobbling like that no wonder things were moving as for face shield verses glasses like he said doubt the shield would have been better. like the helmet idea. would have been nice if the lathe tool had been presented to the wood properly tisk tisk, matt gonna make you take lessons again, see ya scott

  • @62schmidt speed is way to high and tool was way to low he could have torn a finger off !

  • молодец -все было точно просчитано,хотя риск был

  • i have one word; stupid

  • woah man these guys are harsh!!. i think it was a bold move to spin that sucker. Did it ever get true? It seems the wobble messed up the possibility of it becoming round.

  • dude, you just reaffirmed my believe that some people should not procreate

  • what is this, parenting class? leave the guy alone. besides this could've been an instruction video on what NOT to do with a lathe. (just without an intro)

  • that looks like a solid General lathe and its movin pretty good... i hope its bolted to the floor....

  • You claim to be shop teacher. If you're truly concerned with teatching technique and respect for tools, you'll take that video off youtube and never upload it again. Think about it. You're setting an example, and not a good one.

  • not the most inteligent person ever, and as for managing to survive this , quite amazing.

rock and roll i dont think so , blind stupidity i do

  • Why would you run something so big so fast!

  • funny in Canada you could get thrown in jail for that...or the mental hospital....

  • are you making a bat?...

  • Rock the fuck on!!!!!! Woodturning...beer....punk..... = AWESOME

  • i think its very dangerous to showoff on such ocasion and saying that im using lathe first time dont make it better. When i ordered my first lathe, till it came i watched Video tutorials on YT about wood turning (it was 2 days) you can find so much material about that and any other topic that you need only to gather experience after that. On first day i made a perfect baseball bat (cause its easy shape;P) and i worked with spruce wood which is hard to turn cause it brakes quick

  • And this is the future of our country? If you have a death wish I hope you don't take anyone else with you. Did you learn any common sense at anytime in your young life? Trying to be cool on youtube won't protect you from your self. It is obvious that being arrogant and ignorant is the most favored thing of the 17-20somethings to do these days, hope some of the comments get into your head and help you live a little longer.

  • WoodenNicol , your statements are very true!

And yes though I haven't turned any thing that large since, I am the future of our country.

  • @mfunkbarley you phuckin turned that shyt as long as it doesn't move you're safe I think the tool rest should be further away and a stronger piece of steel should be applied as the shank what I mean is a thicker piece of steel but once the wood is leveled in diameter it doesn't shake anymore anyway the main ingredient is the shaking and size but I likey. "thumb$"

  • what the hells he going to make out of this???

  • Totally Idiotic.

All safety rules have been thrown out the window. This isn't tough, and it isn't Rock & Roll -- its just plain stupid.

Learn how to turn, and please, stop posting garbage like this.

  • In a situation as this project I highly recommend a motor cycle helmet.I use one from time to time.

  • That is a great idea! Brilliant. Thanks.

  • Plus, every one keep talking about a face shield.

How is that going to help me if 80 lbs of green catalpa flies off the lathe at my face?

The difficult I can do right a way, the impossible takes a little longer.

  • do yourselves a favor before you get seriously hurt.

go to a woodshop, and ask someone there how you should use that machine. the rpm's are way to high, the tool rest should be stable, and the chisel shouldn't be aimed at your crotch. the safety glasses are a very good idea, but you need a face shield. you are making me very nervous watching this video. please get some schooling on this machine. don't do that again.

  • So I have done stupid with zero's on the end!

I have to confess I love the reactions I get out of this video.

And yes, I was a high school shop teacher for the public schools and yes we did win first place in the state of Oregon for woodworking that year.

No. I won't do that again.

Yes, I'm glad I didn't clock my crotch with the tool.

because yes, I do to have a family some day!

  • @mfunkbarley

ahhhhh the ol "bill n ted" way.

you word it properly and it comes true in the future....

  • Right On, Russ!

"never let down, never let down!"

  • Don't let the Fu$%ers drag you down! Awsome!

  • this is wonderful...don't let the fu%&

  • wow you really dont know what the fuck you are doing m only 16 and i have been woodturning for 5 years and i have had 3 ascendants one of them was like what you were doing i got my arm pulled in and broke it so learn some fucking safety. a real wood turner. tyler

  • pure genius.......NOT

  • Another idiot on his way to removing himself from the gene pool. Don't worry about the brain damage, you clearly already have it.

  • I love how he just fucking bothers to wear eyeglass....Hahahhahhaa

  • You will eventually die doing this.

  • lol, I hope not but if so I, It would be a lovely way to go. 70lb chunk of wood to the fore head.

  • Sure, as long as it's quick. I'm only mentioning it because something similar happened here. He didn't die but has permanent brain damage. Good luck!

  • I almost lost my right hand sanding at 1500rpm...But I guess this would make a great vid nowadays...?

  • Hey, good vid. Thanks for sharing.

  • This is why people think woodturning is dangerous.

  • yeah. that's BIG

  • very nice
