  • this video is 240p for safety reasons. great artist.

  • now play it blindfolded lol

  • These of you who disrespect Lisitsa are just very close minded bigots without a true musical criterions. According to you Arrau, Kempff are better as they're more established names. Fools.

  • Lisitsa plays it a lot better. She's great!

  • @Hobott Yeah, Lsistsa is a great player but I don't think she plays this better than Arrau. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences and there's nothing to be doing a fight about it.

  • El mejor!

  • In many of the videos i have seen of this movement the pianist plays the presto section so fast it looses its clarity and you cant hear the melody, each note.

This gentlemen cares so much about music he is willing to slow down the tempo a little bit both in the allegro ma non troppo and the presto section in order to keep the expression accsesible.

    And i like that.

  • Lisistsa is pure techinique, no feelings, no heart, no pauses only techinique.

Arrau play with great technique but he plays with heart, with feeling, he turns Beethoven to play this great and beautiful piece... this is play piano.

  • @fbarrazc Beethoven is beyond Lisistsa and should be reserved for the greats (Arrau, Richter, Barenboim etc

  • Best bethoveen‘s sonata

  • Maestro!!!!

  • His face at 7:29... along with the music, you can just feel the power and energy.

  • Oh, thats wonderful. MUCH better than Valentina

  • lool Im young and thats why im shy

  • I am a great admirer of Lisitsa but this simply trashes her performance.

  • Arrau in his 80's plays this piece far better, far deeper than the pianists in their prime... yes including Valentina Lisitsa...

  • Very smooth and professionally done....Bravo

  • @adjustme100 Yes, that it is... the professionalism of Arrau, the concept of what is the role of the pianist respect the composers and their works, this concept was very different from actual master's. The main reason lays in how old masters were educated by their teachers; formerly was very different from today. Krause inculcated in Arrau strict, absolute respect and fidelity to the composers, keeping total control and avoiding any personal outburst, overshadowing the true meaning of the work.

  • Life doesn't get better than listening to this. I am surprised that Arrau is not viewed as THE preeminent Beethoven pianist.

  • hmz I just wanna have fun with you

  • Rubinstein,Gilels,Clara Haskil,Annie Fischer,Ives Nat,Aldo Ciccollini,Alicia de Larrocha,Brendel,Von Sauer,Perlemuter and the last romantic CLAUDIO ARRAU.

  • I encountered much more emotions a person possibly can throughout life in just 9 minutes. I can't even dare try to describe the vastness of emotions in this video. It would be like trying to describe everything about universe. Claudio Arrau is legend.

  • Very nice! My only complaint is that I always pictured this song being played with fury and agitation, and I just can't hear/see it in this presentation.

  • @Ray0X0 I have listened to this sonata for about 2 years from differents pianists and especially recapitulation and the coda for about 50 times every day last year !!!

if I don't take into account the tempo and some accidentals (which is not really important), there no mistakes in this performance except the 8:07 as you said.. and I check it with a software which reduce the speed of the video..

  • ¡Qué cantidad de estupideces hablan algunos acá!...What quantity of stupidities somebodies say here!...The great masters are not comparable each others...

  • Dear Joeblack6661,

You could convince me why Claudio Arrau plays better than Valentina Lisistsa? She seems flawless.

  • @Caju10jose The feeling that this man puts into the piece. His tempo is perfect, and also captures the mood perfectly. Lisita is a great pianist, this man is one of the best...

  • He was the teacher of the teacher of my piano teacher!! \O/

I'm so honored for this! ;)

  • MARAVILLOSO MAESTRO!!!

  • @chilenoHDU Wow. You have certainly mentioned the whos who here. I would add Gilels to your list. Rub is number one though. What ever happened to Ashkenazy and Barenboim, the darlings of the 1960s? I personally like Radu Lupu also. He has a sweet sound.

  • @SugarTomAppleRoger Sure!! send them an invitation too! :D

  • Chile

  • I don't understand. How they dare to criticize to the best interprets of Beethoven?

  • Comment removed

  • @prsguitar22 ozzy osbourne made it best

  • @pianofuentes he's probably joking, let him talk...

  • Many years back, watching tv, I was asked "Wound't it be great to win the lottery? to which I ,w/o , hesitation , said , "NO, I would prefer to play my piano like this". 20 odd years on, still say the same. WJW

  • What a pleasure it is to listen and watch a great pianist play with that special quality that comes with greatness! Bravo maestro!

  • awful

  • @FingerMyFinger Awful? This man has some of the best interpretations of beethoven ever...

  • @PhillyB702 well not this one theres many mistakes

  • so i think you are a bad musician. you dont understand about sonority and articulations. "sonata" comes from sonare-sonority of an instrument and the most important thing that we must understand when listening beethoven sonatas. you cant concentrate it only tempo or "mistakes" as you said ,its a poor adolescantly comment, bullshit!!! Arrau has really a great sense of sonority and you envy him.

  • @FingerMyFinger Please... awful is Horowitz playing this, not Arrau.

  • @Ray0X0 havent heard horowitz play it so i dont know but either way this was still awful... sorry

  • Comment removed

  • @prsguitar22 Only at the end there is a very small error, the rest is perfect both in intention and precision.

We must note that for this concert Arrau was not in good health, in some places you can hear him coughing, but it was still a truly extraordinary and exciting concert, which showed that the interpretive and communicative qualities of Arrau, were intact.

  • Comment removed

  • @prsguitar22 Ok, that is your personal opinion, which I do not agree at all.

I have heard dozens of times this version and the truth I have not heard anything you mention.

Obviously many people will not like Arrau's style, due we all have different tastes and perceptions of beauty, but apart this nothing can be criticized, because this presentation is simply superb. (Just listen to the audience reaction at the end ...).

  • @prsguitar22 Excuseme, but you are talking with no sense, in fact it's absurd absolutelly... if you are professional you should know you are wrong. Arrau follows the dynamics with extreme neatness, personality and emotion.

If you want compare Arrau with great pianists, please take great interpreters of Beethoven, not Horowitz.

Anyway, If you take him as model it is understandable the error.

  • @prsguitar22 technical perfection is just a small detail while we're talking about playing music with emotion. arrau used to have some mistakes when playing, but the most important thing is that he has shown us something in beethoven's music that noone could see previously

and not just beethoven... liszt.. chopin.. brahms.. debussy..

sorry if my english isn't good enough

  • This is what happens when man is one with the music! I wish I had the chance to watch him live... But, thank you for this video.

  • this interpretation makes me go grrrrARRAU

  • he plays it a lot better than Lisitsa!

  • @joeblack6661 well, lisitsa is not in an untouchable status... good pianist but far from playing like the greatest yet! she has potential, but she is getting older by time, and insists on a type of play that lacks the needed finesse and feeling in many of her interpretions

  • @joeblack6661 dont think so

  • @joeblack6661 i said that cus if u hear the very lst part hes out of tempo hes an awesome pianist 1 of my favourites but in this piece ima go for valentina just do the final PERFECT.

  • @recipoldinasty If you want a perfect final search the Sviatoslav Richter rendition.

  • @hellboyreloaded not kidding u when i say that guy makes some mistakes i appasionata .p still awesome and very fast

  • @joeblack6661 - Being that he probably has @ 50 years more experience playing I'd say your comment is rather dumb.

  • a gift.

  • OMG this man is the best Beethoven performer ever, just pefect ¡¡¡

this is the meaning of "appassionata" ¡¡¡

Gracias Arrau, Beethoven y... Youtube!

  • A very remarkable and cultured man.

  • Every note is clear and played with the right emotion. Excellent!

  • June 9th 1991 Claudio Arrau passes away!

It's been 20 years we still admire you maestro!!!

    Thank you!

  • this is a recording from his 80th birthday recital. great program, great renditions from the Chilean master. amazing for his age, amazing for any age.

  • when was this

  • Gonna have to change the strings after that one! This guy's one in a billion, but doesn't he look like Jerry Stiller in this video? Friggin' awesome! Arrau plays more notes NOT trying, than I do in an entire day! Makes it look easy.

  • 34 people probably like hip hop.

  • The piano just got raped !!

  • 7:30 ... Look his face ... he is in another world ...

  • 33 people have their ears buried down into a mine.

  • @pianistaamateur Ha ha !!

  • @pianistaamateur Ha ha !!

  • @pianistaamateur Haha one of the best comments related to dislikes on youtube. This performance is awesome.

  • WOW!!! That was simply incredible. Amazing and inspiring!

  • It never ceases to amaze me to see this master in his old age (80) playing this difficult work without the slightest effort, not even tired and never overwhelmed by the performance. All the videos I've seen about him, at any age, he always looks the same way, playing without any effort, as natural as talking with friends ... incredible!

  • @Ray0X0

Exactly, I remember reading that when Barenboim first did the Emperor with Arrau, he was dripping with sweat, but Arrau came off the stage beaming without a drop. He just couldn't understand how this was possible!

  • He put the "Bible" to music, in a passionate way!

  • He put the "Bible" to music, in a passionate way!

  • jeje he is a chilean person!

  • And the best thing it's that My master claudio arrau is chilean fuck yeah, wherever you are claudio rest in peace sends regards to beethoven, nobody during the XX century could interpreted beethoven as you, it's amazing the way that claudio arrau plays the piano from Chile regards claudio (god) :D

  • How old is he here?

  • @ann03071874 Its his 80th Birthday recital

  • @alexilmagnifico Jesus Christ!

  • Wow, this interpretation had little mistakes and some stuff people might moan about - but it was absolute MUSIC and absolute understanding of each note. This is just a GREAT MASTER beyond any technical stuff. BRILLIANT !

  • VOU PRECISAR DE 10 ENCARNAÇÕES PRA TOCAR 1/4 DO QUE ELE TOCAVA!! REALMENTE VC É INSUPERÁVEL !!!GRANDE CLAUDIO ARRAU!! THE BEST OF UNIVERSE!

  • This is what Beethoven had in mind.. bravo Beethoven, bravo Arrau... you are the best !

  • @Ray0X0 Exactly.

  • SUBLIME CTM!!!!............MONSTRUO!!!

  • I used to know shit - nowadays I know I knew shit. But what I do know now is that music, in all its complexity, remains a simplicity. Which most recording artists do not grab. Richter did. Entremont does. Beethoven did. Arrau does. Phenomenal.

  • 33 people don't understand music.... amazing

  • It's our national proud, the best interpreter of Beethoven during XX century and It's Chilean, regards from Chile Your land Claudio Arrau our land Rest in peace wherever you are.

  • 33 people don't know what mean MUSIC ! (3:55 killer ass modulation)

  • 33 people don't know what mean MUSIC !

  • He is briliant

  • too much rubato for me i prefer rubinstein's recorded version...

  • Amazing talent- manages to create two entirely different instruments in dialogue: the right hand and the left. Haven't heard anyone else that can do that.

  • the sad thing about the appassionata is that when I youtube it thereappears some kind of horse show....

  • that man just played the fuck out of that piano

  • Arrau and Horowitz were both great, in different ways.

  • Arrau is my favorite....... Arrau and Horowitz cannot be compared because of their greatness, master and etc.... They are the masters of piano

  • Amazing! This is a masterly interpretation! Bravo! Arrau's Liszt and Brahms were also thoroughly convincing.

  • @ssprokofiev and chopin, schumman, schubert, debussy, ravel, bach and mozart

  • Wonderful, but I still prefer Horowitz and Litsitsa.

  • why is it that i simply can't get tired of his Interpretation? it stirs ones sole to undifine limitations.

  • No other pianist has interpreted Beethoven in such beautiful, deep and electrizing way as Claudio Arrau... ever

  • @Ray0X0 i think gilels did .

  • Yeah, Gilels was a great Beethoven performer, but in my humble opinion some lighter than Arrau.

Did you know that E. Gilels was the best friend of Claudio Arrau, among all the other musicians? In fact there is an interesting anecdote .. (see the next comment).

  • In May 1968 Arrau gave a concert in Moscow of Brahms Piano Concertos 1 and 2, after this wonderful concert that criticism has catalogued as one of the best offered ever, Gilels headed to congratulate Claudio, but he just could say "liebe Claudio..." (dear Claudio) and began to cry with emotion on Arrau's shoulder, saying that after this performance he could no longer offer these concerts in public again.

Ha ha.. those musicians!! obviously is absourd, Gilels was a great Brahms performer!

  • @Ray0X0 wow. It seems that you know a lot more than me. Anyway i think the two performance are great, and I'm not musician or something so I guess someone who know a lot about music (someone like you) is more able to say than one is better than other. Sorry for my mistakes I'm french.

  • @Ray0X0 what about beethoven?

  • @jimmyranaway Mmmhh (thinking) Beethoven... Beethoven... I know him? ha ha, I'm kidding :D.

What about Beethoven?! is there something else you can say about the greatest composer of all times? Beethoven was the greatest musical genius that nature gave us as human race, that's all.

  • @Ray0X0 electrizing? lol but otherwise, yeah

  • Always reminds me of Hard Target!

  • Very impressive. But it strikes me as more elegant and technically perfect than passionate...

  • I have a question. How modern composers make they piano compositions , in a clasical way of course ??????

What method they use??? I believe there is a terrible missconception about music theory nowadays

  • Pay attention to the anger on his face during the 3rd movement. You can tell that there is some kind of epic musical battle being channeled through his fingers.

  • @krogdog101 ... That it is precisely... that's Beethoven's face...

  • Increible! Maravilloso!

  • @alexilmagnifico well do you know "France Clidat" ?? when Arrau died she declared "there will be no one like Arrau ever again".

Or Do you know "Joachim Kaiser" ??? well he decribed Arrau as "The most Noble, profound, meticulous and precise pianist of our time"

Just 2 examples, also Arrau has a "Direct" link with Beethoven himself

  • i love the 3rd movement so much:D

  • piano genius, one and only!

  • I'd like to know at what level of fame that rubato becomes allowable in a sonata, because it's still against the rules for me.

  • @Ray0X0

    Agree :-)

I feel many pianist are "forcing" the note to go out

But in here, even the piece have several place that needed to be accent but he plays them naturally and all sound produced are harmonious

  • Bravo!!! Miss Valentina is too young,I felt. Maestro Arrau was a big river of music...

  • MASTER
