@hipasssports -----Doug, glad you liked that trip down memory lane. I guess you knew some of the same people that I did from the class of 1961: Bill Sumner, Gerry Kirk.
What a gem. I grew up in Chula Vista in the last 50's and 60's. I remember marching in the children's parade as a 3rd grader. Then on to chula jr high and marched in those red uniforms. Mr. Grant was the best! Wore those uniforms for part of my sophmore year at CVHS. Got some much nicer ones for Maytime. Thanks for the memories
The band that you said "I don't know who they are" at about 7:40ish is El Capitan High School. They were a fairly new school. I went there, haha, it obviously isn't new anymore! I was in band too. Cool!
Thank you for that, I also marched at Hilltop, under the direction of Don Marshall. The year before I went there 1978 was the last year that they had audition for the band. I also played in the Chula Vista City Band the one year they had it. My senior year we marched Maytime 1981 we had the highest score for the whole parade. I hear that this year Hilltop is celebrating the 50th year.
What a great video. Richard Slinkard and I wathced this together last september when I visted him in Chester, Virgina. We were both in most of these activities with John in the 50's and at Hillttop and Chula Vista High Schools until our graduation in 1961. GREAT NOSTALGIA!! Bill S
Johnny Downs had a children's show on TV, ch 10. Known dancing on top of a large Golden Arrow milk bottle with a pogo stick. There used be a fruit packing house just west of that on the corner of 4th and F st, with RR tracks going East on F st to 3rd over the K st where another packing house was located at the corner of K st and 3rd( current location of the BoA bank.
Thanks for bringing back to my memory Johnny Downs. The name was familiar but I couldn't quite remember who he was. I am going to make a YouTube video on Chula Vista back in the 50's and 60's.
Just right down the street, West, from that corner of 3rd and F st was the old school building( currently the library. The Sears store sits over the old navy housing, Johhny Downs did a on-location show on the opening day of shopping center.
The packing house was where the current police station is located. The RR tracks cut at 4th and F st then continued East behind (North of the park)the park onto 3rd Ave then south down the middle of 3rd to the other packing house.
It is so great to see Chula Vista in the old days and it's really neat to have someone like this guy post these images so everyone can share in them. Great use of Youtube!
Loved seeing the old footage. My grandmother lived on the corner of 1st and G also. The Workmans. You may of known them. Small World.
