  • From October's Ryde Beacon 2008 (Part One)

Lazy afternoon Gets Scooterists Worked Up!

The annual Scooter Rally-goers - its not music to their ears

During the recent Lazy Afternoon event, a free music affair organised by local businessmen on the Western Gardens over the August Bank Holiday weekend, many Ryde Town Council members were approached by local businesses, representatives of the scooter clubs and other members of the public.

  • (Part Two)

The comments made were almost wholly negative, with criticism of the lack of engagement by the organisers with scooterists, the impact of the event on local businesses and the use of a site that has always previously been a key meeting place for the scooterists and their bikes. Petitions from local businesses and scooterists expressing these concerns were handed to Town Council members, along with emails from scooterists showing their negative and emotive responses.

  • (Part Three)

Questions about the event were raised by members of the public at the September meeting of the Town Council, which is now extremely concerned that, if the scooter clubs decide not to return to the Island next year, Ryde will suffer economically as a result. The Town Council would therefore like to clearly state that it will not be able to give its support to the future hire of this site for the same, or a similar, event next year.

  • Thanks for that islanderview,

I'm afraid the Beacon tends to go straight from my doormat into the bin...I often think I should take a look but I tend to go into auto-pilot mode when it arrives...conditioning I guess, kind of Pavlov's dog with a bit less dribbling...lol

As you no doubt have seen there has been some strong feelings regarding this issue in the comments...more or less 50/50, but theyweren't happy at the price of the beer at the event, so whether it was "free" is doubtful.

  • i want music on the green as well

  • i want scoots back on the green ,and who gang banged lulu i must ave missed that

  • fab scoots, interleaved with the gorgeous mr weller what's not to like

  • Nah...Keep the Green for the Scoots...In the early Eighties we had to fight to park on it as the Plod always moved us around...always beeen the best place to crash and chill-out....if I want a beer,I'll go across to the 'Lud...What pissed me off the most was the 'FREE PARKING' sign...its ALWAYS been free parking...

  • The free parking sign this year probably means the council are going to make you pay next year....I wouldnt put it past them.

  • O.k,so was it the Council who was behind all this.?...not VFM by all accounts...a straight forward answer would be most conducive.....the next issue of scootering should be very interesting!!

  • I wouldn't know if the council were behind it or not....one thing I do know though is that if there is something that is a success and running smoothly on the Island they will invariably come along andfuck it up...I even don't think they purposely do so, its just that they haven't got a clue and they are arrogant fools besides...a disastrous combination.

  • cont.

Take the rejuvenated IOW Festival for instance, they (the council) were insistent that they alone were going to run it against all logic...and in its first year it was a disaster which cost the council tax payers here a fortune...after which they were forced to hand it over to professional organisers...and look at it now, it makes a fortune.

  • Well SOMEONE must know who organized it!!...didn't just magic itself there..... :0)

  • Nice vid mate I was sitting in the bowling alley car park dead ahead of the entrance. I personally think that the music venue was a waste of space and was a new way to get people to pay a lot more money than they would have to for a pint. Needless to say it won't be there next year.

  • Remember the main reason the stage and gigs were free, is because the liquid lounge sponsored it and you can bet they sold the drinks... which in my opinion was well organised and I preferred it to just the scooters.

I for one hope they do the same next year and I think the ice rink need to totally re think their venue for atmosphere and toilet stench!

  • Thanks for your input tbjdiamonddog, the music appears to be taking the lead now....smelly toilets appear to have become a trade mark of the IOW since cleaning went out to contract- hardly surprising as the contract goes to the lowest tender who invariably pay the minimum wage...that's no excuse though and the toilets are a disgrace.

  • Great video .

  • The live music on the green was a good idea, and it was a free event with ALL bands playing for free to entertain the scooterists.Hope its back nxt yr!!!!

  • Thanks for your opinion 66ska...a different picture now seems to be emerging with a fifty/fifty split on whether the music on the green was good/bad thing....any others?

  • I only went into the green stage bit once (on friday) but i think it was excellent. I wish i had more chances to get down there on the other days. It should be a regular thing. It could even get bigger with bigger bands and so on. Fuck it lets turn the rally into a scooter festival! I'd pay to go to something like that.

    keep on keepin on.

  • if anyone can set up a petition,,{coz im too fick to do anything like that},,im sure youd get loadsa signatures..all you gotta do is post the link somewhere in scootering and the rest will be history i think.....sweary dave.mustaffas scooter club maidstone

  • There was a petition in the cafe just outside the venue and they had filled around 20 pages in one afternoon.

  • The IOW has always been my favourite place in the UK. Add to that the best scooter rally in the world and I was in heaven all weekend. Thank you everyone.

  • the only bollox thing about that green thing was having to buy beer from there and not being able to take cans. Scooter purists dont like it, but how can you not like free music? Me thinks the purists are getting too old for all that rock and roll stuff! Young scooterists will love it, and surely thats what you want to keep the scene going....isnt it?

  • Yeah if its good for you its good, I guess.....I suppose its kinda about a thing that's already good gradually becoming more "organised", I mean the music may have been free this year, but how about next?...I heard that the local council wanted to stop the mass ride out this year...obviously must have hit stiff opposition though. Quite why they could ever even consider fucking with something that other areas would pray for on their patch is quite beyond me.

  • I like to think so mate

  • So`59 dont keep us in suspense where abouts is your scoot in the vid?

  • clocked my scoot on your vid, nice 1 mate . Nice to hear we,ar still welcome, see you next year

  • 1959 was a bloody good year!

  • It certainly was, I was born

  • was there..just got back....that thing on the green really fucked the rally up...prefer the old way,,scooters on the green,,sit on the wall with a beer andwatch the world go by,,,cant beat it..

  • Thanks or your comment, that makes 2 out of 3 comments pissed off with the "thing on the green".... does everybody else agree? If so comment about it as this is your rally and you should have the biggest say as you are the ones bringing the business to the Island

If there's plenty of opposition an online petition, to the organisers, with a link in the video description would be an idea and its easy enough to set up....let me know.

  • cant wait for next year now, another good one, only downside was that thing on the green opposite the king lud,the scooters always go on there i think it spoilt it a bit.other than that f*****g great.

  • top rally ,fucking fantastic ,,i was there today
