A 1.4 only gets 38 highway? I had a 2005 Chevy cavalier 5 speed and it made 39-40 hwy under the right conditions and thats from a 2.2 with twice as much torque
haha i saw a video of someone doing the same thing with these little cam pumps in reality they serve not much of any purpose. its like someone tryng to get 3 extra hp by buying a new exhaust system knowing it adds 50 more lbs to the car. ya, that makes a lot of sense on the road. rule number one, are the germans or professional racecar designers doing this... no and thats why... once a thought and in the trash. this is trash.. a simple rotary engine would be fine for this car size
but...rotary engine use a LOT more of fuel...look at the fuel effency of a RX8 or RX7 wich would be in the order of 18MPG average... and in this kind of engine, the more the power it can produce, the better it is!
I don't understand why they didn't just go full cam-less, and run the intake and exhaust valves entirely off of electronically controlled hydraulic actuators.
@ItsBallGame Because they is way ahead of any technology we have, to be cost effective anyway. Solenoids are digital, On/Off. So they would have to duty cycle them for low lift. They cannot open all the way instantly or you would have no vacuum. If they were to stay closed after the other valve closes, you would have even greater pumping losses, hence overlap and gradual slopes varying valve lift. And, They are un-reliable, especially a solenoid that has to move that much weight.
I bought a portion of a Fiat 500 indirectly back in 2009 already. It is called taxpayer auto bailout. I would gladly buy any car made by Americans in the "right to work state" no GM, Chrysler or Ford. We are living in Mass already have the unions breathing down the necks of politicians and common people day in and day out, they last thing I want is to give my hard earned money indirectly to unions thugs. It is just me, you know. One person, one vote.
Great technology but this car needs to get 35 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway for it to sell the way it should. I owned a little sub-compact, gas, four cylinder 1974 Dodge Colt (made in Japan) that was rated at 50 mpg on the highway in 1974!
One big complaint from me. Let me preface by saying, I love this little Fiat and am happy to see it in the US. Back to my complaint. They claim 30/38 MPG with this car. Decent for a car of its size. However, THAT IS WITH THE MANUAL. Most Americans will be purchasing the automatic, which only manages 34 MPG hwy. That downright sucks for a car this small. Not to mention premium gas is recommended. Ha!
@palebeachbum It might not be as bad as the numbers predict. I've consistently found that curb weight is the overriding factor and the smaller cars typically get better-than-EPA-stated mileage. It was true with my Escort, Civic, and Kia Rio. My suspicion, although not confirmed, is that the 500 will also surpass the EPA estimates, even with the automatic. The premium petrol thing is troubling, though.

hell ide pay the extra 10% fuel costs just get rid of all that extra crap on the top of my engine. Thats a lot more stuff to go wrong.
