At least lakota still survived, other natives in other countries were not so lucky, in nicaragua almost the entire pacific coast and the central part of the country was wiped out, majority were enslaved to work in gold mine in peru and bolivia, and there is so little of those natives culture,
My grandparents, who were both part Indian, visited the Lakota reservations on their visit to South Dakota and have donated lots of money to them. In return, they've received Lakota-made jewelry and crafts, such as dreamcatchers and blankets.
The Lakota were a society lead by men. The men decided when to move, what to do, etc. The women ran the home which is a tipestola, not tipi. Women put up and took down the home when the camp moved. Men only had their personal belongings, thats it. Some other tribes are different. I am Lakota, from the Wakpa Waste Oyanke. Mnikoju Lakota hemancayelo.

That is true, I researched it...the WOMEN built and raised the 'tipis'...the Lakota people knew the right way to live in harmony and respect the great spirit and the mother Earth!
Thank you! I'm so glad there are people like you who can share with us, who the first nations peoples were. I suffer white people 's guilt over what my ancestors did to your ancestors. I used to believe that all was lost, in terms of your history, culture, and teachings. There is so much to learn from our brothers and sisters, and you are making that possible.
Good video, good info. For those who wish to find out more I highly reconmend reading the book "Black Elk Speaks" by John G. Neilhardt. Thank you for sharing this video knowledge! Blessed Be!!!
Thats another lie,the women did not own the tipis. And yea if the CHIEFS agreed to migrate than they would and no woman could stop them from doing it because the cheif is the leader of the indian tribe.
That is no lie, the women owned EVERYTHING except the mens weapons and battle regalia. That is how you can tell they were matriarchal. If as man found his belongings outside the tipi, it meant his wife divorced him. Only the women built and moved the tipis. This is all recorded from the mouths of Lakota themselves. When the Chiefs agreed to move their bands, the women welcomed it because it usually meant more meat, which they owned, and it allowed them to clean house. Everyone worked in harmony.
It does not matter what they owned, the women owned the land and homes in seneca tribe to but the men had the final say in the nations matters, they were not matriarchal, thats a lie!No indian tribe was matriarchal, yes they worked in harmony but the women were not the head of the tribe, thats a lie!
@zacuan Yes the women ran the house, which is really called tipestola, not tipi, tipi means they live there....tipestola is a word we use to describe a cone shaped house. In Lakota we did not use the word chief.
Go look it up,read any book on indian tribes or go on wikepedia and you can look up any indian tribe that is researchable and see not one was matriarchal!
not true, and "chief" was an idea the europeans placed upon these people who they could not believe did not live the way they did, with one dictator or ruler or president, a true democracy.
alot of the women held more spiritual power than the men did in some tribes, which was the most respected position.
Thats a lie...They had chiefs way before they ever encountered white men!The indian tribes did take on the white mans ways, they fought against the white man,and chiefs was definetly the indians custom not a white mans.

@briankofke incorrect. The Bible is made of many different books written by many different people, the Catholic Councils decided which books were worthy to be put into the Bible.
Take the seneca tribe for example, the women owned all the land and homes, but when it came to nation diplomacy or any decision on the nation the men made all the decisions and the women did not have a say
and that is why i did not say ALL tribes, but in many the women held higher spiritual positions than men.

@brianbmf thats no true in any native tribe the women were the ones who took care of everything the men only hunted and went to war.. native women are sacred ...

I am from belgrade , serbia (in Europe). and I must say that the your culture and Lakota way of living is very respected from me and many people here. I like this video and your story, and for my opinion Lakota way have one really right way to threat every member of community. Same right for man, woman and child, it is not same case in many modern societies today.
Thank you for posting this video and your wisdom. I learned much from this video. I am on my first step to discovering my ancestral heritage. Go in a good way, -Joseph
i am white and native american (desended from black foot tribe my grand dad says) and i am very sad to say that my dad has completly forgoten his haritage but i stay true to it
Haw not bad,if U R going 2 teach our Laota ways, please teach our correct tribal names eg:-it is not Hunkappa, this is still whestern-man,s distortion;we say Unnkappa, same 4 the other Tribes & Many R left-out,but well done 4 sharing& helping 2 break through 4 our tribes.:)
Thank you for the comments, and I apologize for the misspelled names. I am still learning the differences between western spelling and Lakota spelling. One day I hope to learn from the Lakota themselves.
Thay,s ok my friend, many only know what are many mis-spelled Myths about the Lakota PP,If U wish 2 know more I am happy & humbly willing 2 teach U our Lakota ways,1 thing U have so very right is the Sunflower in the beginnin,as small child still living in thr Great Plains of Sth Dakota on Lakota Tribal Lands, this is 1 of my happiest memories;Running through aa massive field of sunflowers so thanks again 4 the Sunflower is very special 4 many Lakota ppl.Your humble friend,
A "Brave" is a term used by Luther Standing Bear to describe a male who undergoes the confirmation ceremony to live his life for his people, in accord with what they hold as being sacred. A man can fulfill the role of being a brave by choosing to be a warrior, hunter or scout. I believe that the Lakota always spoke the truth, so I try to keep my interpretations of their words as far from fantasy as possible, but I do recognize as a flawed human being, I can only do my best.
Hi relatives from White Man As always a touchy subject when non-Indians speak for or about Indians. There's still lots of Lakotas around and they have some ways. You won't get much idea about the Lakota and other indigenous people from this video, relatives, however good the intentions. No offense, but it's head knowledge not heart. It's then not now. It's just another non-indian fantasy about indians, eh? Like, hey, I'm 1/32 Choctaw or something, innit? Blessings to all my relations
Out of respect and admiration to the group Lakota, never perform their most sacred rites, the inipi (steam bath), dance of the sun and Calumet (pipe).
Haukola, I am not a Native American by birth, but in my heart and soul I am. My heart breaks every time I read of the hardships that they are still experiencing today. Long ago their lands were taken from them; they were humiliated, their families killed or torn apart; they were uprooted from all that they loved. We have much to learn from the Elder's Prophecies. It is amazing to see how many of their Prophecies have come to pass.
Not a silly question. There are people who still speak the Lakota language, and many of their traditions are remembered and practiced, but most of what they were is gone. Their exploitation by the U.S. has put them in a position where it is impossible to live in the traditional ways. Their matrilineal family structure has been radically altered and of course the Buffalo have been removed from their lives. They are a fragment of what they once were. We hope they will be free soon.
i live in texas there are still idian spirits stil here that died 1000s of years ago or 100s ,they have never left there homes ,i seen them . GOD be with all the indians
The saga of the people, the true American is a struggle known by most people of European origin that push for the inhospitable regions of the continent and the centuries pass with p nearly lost their own identity and culture
This is a video that I really needed to see in this chaotic day I've had. Thankyou for posting it, and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Shalomies Shygui, I believe highly the Precious Natives, especially Cheyenne, Sioux are from The 10 Lost Tribes. They're Languages Sounds so Hebrew & mixed w/ Chinese, because they had to Cross China in order to Get HERE by The Barron Straights. They Love Our YHWH! and are Coming Back HOME To HIM now. Praise HIS Kadosh Shem!~ Love to you Shy, I am Autumn Morning Song also an Y'sraelite & Lover of Yahshua Ha Mashiach. Anyone is Grafted into HIM! Romans 11:17 says so. :-)
Indians just want to be Indians, not lost tribes. What's lost when you know your mother and your father and what lands you come from? B'ivrit? Ata medber ivrit? Ani lo mevinah. Just let Indians be Indians, pleeeeeze.
The Aztlan and mecha groups are teaching that the Lakota are not really Lakota..instead are Aztecs and that the Lakota's lands belong to Mexico's citizens. Aztlan and Mecha support illegal immigrants coming onto native american reservations putting central and south america gangs all over the reservations..like sur 13, brown side locos, 18th street, etc. They support the illegal immigrants which bring the drugs onto the reservations. take a stand against them.
no what can really help is if we all joind to help and not make more problems so no one needs to get kicked out. your racist thinking wont help solve any thing so your just as big a part of the problem as whites are but thats just my opinion...i am lakota
I am not racist..I am not profiting from anything. I live pay check to pay check...
I don't get any special favors or treatment from anyone. I am not responsible for what white people before me did. MY ancestors some of them worked for native rights...some did not. My point is ...we are human, period and we all need to pull together and stop the bullshit towards one another. We need to take care of the Earth. Simple as that or there won't be one.
I am white. I am not responsible for what the past white man did. I think we are all Earth children and until we ALL realize that Mother Earth will cry in hurt and shame. She gives and gives and humans take and fight. Until we ALL come to ONE way...Mother will continue to die. I'm for trying to wake everyone up. Join Me.
im with you on trying to help out but your profiting off what your ancestors did to the lakota so you are responsible and part of the problems still today
What a touching slide show. I am white and agree with rehan832007. I am ashamed of what my "ancestors" have done and have always felt in my soul deeply apoligetic. I want to help pick up the peices, but i don't know where to start. Europeans came over and caused a devestating Culture shock. I commend all who truely carry on thier culture in a traditional and spiritual manner. Something tells me that's really where it could have a strong start for replenishment.
Its good that there are more and more U.S. and world citizens who are realizing the terrible situation that the Lakota are in, thanks to the U.S. government. Its overwhelming to try to figure out how to help them and where to begin, but when the Lakota are ready to stand up for their sovereign rights, WE ALL HAVE TO STAND WITH THEM! Not letting them stand alone is at least one way of helping them. Following the progress of Russell Means and his delegation may give you some ideas of how to help.
I was just wondering, now that the Lakota have their own country, what would that mean for Mt. Rushmore as I think that would now place that in Lakota territory.
People around the globe care deeply & wish to help American Indian communities. *Some do not know how they can help though.* Here's just a few ways you can make a HUGE difference within the Lakotah community: *Help Lakotah sovereignty russellmeansfreedom. c o m *Help the Lakotah community friendsofthepineridgereservation. c o m *Help build sustainable microvillages at natural-villages. o r g *Help nonprofit Lakotah schools cokantiospaye. c o m & contribute positive Youtube comments:)
Thank you for sharing this. I am here to learn and with this I have. This film was added to my playlist, in hope that other will learn from it. Thank you, and may God bless!!
good video. I ahve heard free Tibet, chinese say that Tibet was once of china some time ago. What about South Dakota? free South Dakota? It was always "free" till last 200 hundred years.
Thx 4 this informative video. And I hope that 1 day the US Gvmnt. remember the old contracts and they hold what they promissed in these contracts. Greetz from Germany.
The narrative in the clip itself said they fought the Cree and Pawnee over territorial encroachments. Did that make any of THOSE people devils? The story of human history is filled with conflict and war, the perpetrators of which represent the entire human race. Stop the self hatred, you just make more victims out of this horror.
Ya'at'eeh! I give the Lakota great respect and honor. I am Dine' (Navajo). I enjoy learning of your traditional values, and praise the people who continue native traditions. Hozho' Nahasdlii.
Im proud to be Lakota and it has been a burden onmy heart what will the young learn..as many have forgotten the old ways, My time is near..I five praise for this invention of technology andpray it continues to serve our people will honor. Pilamayaye

Good news: Sioux scouts killed Osama Ben Laden.
Honour to those Sioux Scouts for their courage !
HUGE MORAL VICTORY for South Dakota Sioux !!
There's no hate in this post, just a fair tribute as Sioux have been always died for the USA killed by USA or just serving that country...

Thank you for the comments, and I apologize for the misspelled names. I am still learning the differences between western spelling and Lakota spelling. One day I hope to learn from the Lakota themselves.

And one more thing: whats a 'brave'? Aho
carloscarlos13 2 years ago
A "Brave" is a term used by Luther Standing Bear to describe a male who undergoes the confirmation ceremony to live his life for his people, in accord with what they hold as being sacred. A man can fulfill the role of being a brave by choosing to be a warrior, hunter or scout. I believe that the Lakota always spoke the truth, so I try to keep my interpretations of their words as far from fantasy as possible, but I do recognize as a flawed human being, I can only do my best.
zacuan 2 years ago

It is amazing to see how many of their Prophecies have come to pass.

great vid, this is probly a silly question but do any lakota live in the traditional way 2day? Peace
mungo47 2 years ago
Not a silly question. There are people who still speak the Lakota language, and many of their traditions are remembered and practiced, but most of what they were is gone. Their exploitation by the U.S. has put them in a position where it is impossible to live in the traditional ways. Their matrilineal family structure has been radically altered and of course the Buffalo have been removed from their lives. They are a fragment of what they once were. We hope they will be free soon.

I hope they will be free soon too, thanks. Peace

we remember in are hearts what we need to know to feel.
this never dies and if we forget we will be reminded by feeling the pain of love
we are love the elders died for love
we must respect there deaths with love.
Most of what we are is love.
and Love and love does not die
we are and always will be
forgiveness is key

in the modern times ,the balance of intellect and intuition has been lost.this imbalance has separated us from our sisters and brothers,
the winged ones, the four-legged, those that crawl, and those that swim. it has separated us from the elements and from our great earth

They support the illegal immigrants which bring the drugs onto the reservations. take a stand against them.

no what can really help is if we all joind to help and not make more problems so no one needs to get kicked out. your racist thinking wont help solve any thing so your just as big a part of the problem as whites are but thats just my opinion...i am lakota
crowofdeath2 3 years ago

Join Me.

Freespirit488 3 years ago
Its good that there are more and more U.S. and world citizens who are realizing the terrible situation that the Lakota are in, thanks to the U.S. government. Its overwhelming to try to figure out how to help them and where to begin, but when the Lakota are ready to stand up for their sovereign rights, WE ALL HAVE TO STAND WITH THEM! Not letting them stand alone is at least one way of helping them. Following the progress of Russell Means and his delegation may give you some ideas of how to help.
zacuan 3 years ago
I was just wondering, now that the Lakota have their own country, what would that mean for Mt. Rushmore as I think that would now place that in Lakota territory.
CliveKoopa 3 years ago
i was never really ou of the territory the US was trying to buy the land for 300mill but the Lakota wont sell the land

Is the instrument being heard an oboe? As a white person I recognize my race as the devils they have proven themselves to be throughout history.
LeatherShorts 4 years ago
The narrative in the clip itself said they fought the Cree and Pawnee over territorial encroachments. Did that make any of THOSE people devils? The story of human history is filled with conflict and war, the perpetrators of which represent the entire human race. Stop the self hatred, you just make more victims out of this horror.
