BMW M88, this is what the engines in the Euro-spec M635 and M535's were based on, they had a bit less power though... still, 288 BHP isn't exactly terrible for a NA 3.5 I6 back in the 80's haha. The M5's and M6's that came state-side later in '87 and beyond were S38's, same block, lower compression though and they were catalyzed. That took power down to around 250 BHP.

A few people swapped the engines in their M1's, into the S38B38's found in the BMW M5 E34's.
These people were criticized so much afterwards, that they swapped the engines back to the original ones.
As much as you'd wish to have more power in the M1, it's not going to be a classic, unless you keep the original engine in the car and in good condition.
If you want more power, you might as well just buy a newer M-car, or a Ferrari (if it has to be mid-engined).

The M1 engine is the same who will be fitted in 1984 bmw 635 csi: 3,5 liter, 6 cylinder 24 valve DOHC 286 hp.

That used to be David Deacon's car. I saw that at a Camel GT race back in the arly 80s at Mosport. Those were the glory days of endurance racing!
