  • I'd rather listen to John Denver.

  • Comment removed

  • It's my first time of experiencing the pleasure of listening to this song and I am writing the definition of extrinsic motivation for my psychology class.. just an odd coincidence I'm sure..

  • @Gormenghast1234 There are no coincidences...

  • i first heard this in background while playing someone in Scrabble. i was like "what the hell did that guy just say?" i was then Low fan

  • Reminds me of John Frusciante's solo work...which is great

  • Quite simply, Low's Death of a Salesman is one of the most poignant and haunting songs ever written. I salute you Alan Sparhawk for your melancholy brilliance and subtle innuendo. This song speaks to me in a way that I cannot convey with words, and for this I thank you.

  • canon in d, green day's "basket case" and the chorus from fastball's "the way"

  • Wow, their stuff is just darker and harsher than it was.

  • Everyone knows that some say that a musician is just a beer salesman, right?

  • Inacurate remark. That clearly depends on the quality of the music.

  • @LunaSeaSane - I don't think that it is inaccurate to say that "**SOME** say that a musician is only a beer salesman". I know some fine musicians that say that. The quality of the music has nothing to do with it, it is more the quality of the person who does or does not say it and actually means it. To me, almost all music is a quality thing - fine expressions of what is inside the writer and performer.

  • Yes, yes to convince the public...

I dislike the comparison because unlike music, beer is something that can get you intoxicated.

  • @LunaSeaSane - Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but you're telling me that you both respect and enjoy music, but have never been intoxicated by it? ...Peace...

  • More inspired or excited than taken over by it, but I see what you mean... Peas...

  • @unprevarication I AGREE COMPLETELY! sorry my friends dont really get that, but you nailed it man/lady! take a look at spiritualized-perhaps not 'technically' talented but emotional raw and intoxicating.

  • 'Music's for fools'? Everything but music is for fools. You need new friends.

  • I like how this video opened with the chair in the middle of the stage the way the play does.

  • im proud to say that this video was recorded at my school.

that space is gone now, it was made into a theater a couple of years ago.

not a lot of people know about it, but now we have open mic nights in almost the same spot as he's playing.

  • I am speechless, once again. Thank you, Low.

  • I remember forcing myself to learn this song immediately after hearing the album, and then playing it at coffee houses. It perfectly summed up how I felt.

Music is a great way to express yourself, but there's no promise that anyone else will understand or appreciate what you have to say.

  • Wasn't the play's main idea that nobody should "follow" the "American dream" because it leads to unfulfillment and is just an empty husk of materialism?

I always thought Miller used Loman to warn his audience that the "American dream" isn't and should never be about that house or car, but something of personal value each of us sees fit to pursue.

  • I hope Alan and Mimi Sparhawk never feel this way, we love their music, and it's important to express yourself.

  • Not sure why some think the song has to paraphrase Miller's play. I do see the correlation and love it. The video is masochistic and so is the tone of the song. Makes prefect sense to me. Love it, but in a hauntingly sad way.

  • Awesome!

  • Death of a Salesman is about a man who failed in his attempt to follow the American dream. He lives his life thinking that there is nothing better than being a salesman. He believes that being a salesman is the standard idea of how to make it big in America. But he had the wrong idea about being a salesman. He thought that you could make it big by acting big and being handsome. He constantly lies to himself and to his family, to the detriment of his sons.

  • You didn't observe the most important chapter of this song... it's about a musician who writes music how he wants to write it and who then faces society's habit of not supporting the pursuit of art and instead supports the same ol' life pattern of getting a regular job without pursuing passionate, creative interests... and he is, thus, rejected, just like 99% of good artists in America.

  • I should have made myself clearer: I was talking about the actual play "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller

  • not really

  • thats the one ; ) also the coral song 'bill mcai' is based losely on the play.

  • death of a salesman is a book, cant remember the author sorry. great song.

  • It's actually a play by Arthur Miller.

  • why is this called death of a salesman

  • Death of a Salesman, the play, is about a guy who spends his whole life making moeny for other people and realizes, basically, that his life has been meaningless. Sort of.

  • NICE. I'm more and more happy the more material I hear. I really like what they do!

  • ugh, i was supposed to see them at mercury lounge on monday but it sold out and now my week is shot and i am very upset! >:(

  • They never tour Canada. At least we'll have their records and youtube. Cheer up friend.

  • such a beautiful song . . . an anthem about not giving up, and the mercy of the world for those who trek into the endless desert, sacrificing themselves to make something beautiful

  • Woah! Brilliant video for a totally rad song.

  • beautiful

  • fantastic!

  • great

  • got a tape in 1992 from Bug Bookings-band's tape called 'I could Live in Hope'. thus a permanent love affair was established. flawless and beautiful. forever. thanks Low, for everything.

  • incoherent video.

    love the song.

  • The video is hardly incoherent.

  • I thought of John Belushi attacking the guy who sang "I gave my love a cherry that had no stone" in Animal House and moved quickly away from this

  • you obviously aren't familiar with low, and didnt watch more than a minute of this video

  • Like Alan's known me my whole life. Awesome.

  • If anyone has the video for "Disengagement", please post it.
