Gamble learned it from Mike. I remember the time he came home and sang it to me. I think one of the wonderful qualities about this song is that everyone feels they own it. It becomes everyone's "our song". Our children sang this song at Gamble's memorial. Something no one could ever forget.
You're welcome. Thanks for the positive response. The first version I heard of this song was Ron Kickasola's at the Flick. He started performing the song after Juarez (The Flick Trio/Baker Street Irregulars)had split up. That group was comprised of Ron, Barbara Barrow & the song's composer Michael Smith. I believe Gamble learned it from Ron. Doesn't matter, all the versions are good and the song is a classic.
My all time favorite song since I first heard it performed by Gamble Rogers in the 1970s. Gamble drowned in 1991 trying to save a stranger in a riptide off St. Augustine Beach. His version remains my favorite, but I do love Steve Goodman's cover, and, of course, Liam. I got to sit about four feet from Mike Smith in April this year and listen to him sing his beautiful lyrics, just as in this clip. Wonderful, as is this clip. Thanks for posting.
This is a great GREAT video. Thank you!
