@sssoaring2 Sorry Melbourne is so much better than Sydney & It's airport (domestic & International) terminals are in the one building unlike Sydney where you have to travel between 2 buildings, Another advantage of Melbourne airport is that it operates 24 hours a day where Sydney can't because of people's complaints over aircraft noise. There is so much more to do In Melbourne than Sydney we have been voted as Australia's number 1 city & our state capital has always beaten Sydney.
@collectorfun Spoilers don't do that, they disrupt airflow to sop the aircraft from grtting up in the air again after touchdown, and offer as a braking aid.
I hear that landing without spoilers are smooth, can someone confirm thats true? The reason the "bump" is felt when the plane touches down is because the spoilers put pressure on the struts. On light aircrafts where they have no spoilers it feels smoother because there is no pressure on the struts
@mobilemonkey625 LMFAO...I was being sarcastic too...lol-i like that one about did soemone shit in my cheerios...all technical mumbo jumbo shit was fuckin funny....have a good one 15chad15...ha ha ha
Don't worry, your not dead, don't report this to the media, the government, the federal courts or to us, I think we can let this scandal go just this one time ;)
The spoilers are for loss sustentation over the wings so if you deploy spoilers to landing aproach u probably kill some people on the plane, you deploy the spoilers to transfer the charge over the wheels, insted the wings, to reduce the chance to skidding during the braking.
@qantaspilot95 But Sydney (YSSY) has a reasonable length runway and if the load was light and wind favourable then surely it would defeat the need for spoilers?
@Sirwest299 spoilers are Spoilers increase drag and reduce lift on the wing. If raised on only one wing, they aid roll control, causing that wing to drop. If the spoilers raise symmetrically in flight, the aircraft can either be slowed in level flight or can descend rapidly without an increase in airspeed. When the spoilers rise on the ground at high speeds, they destroy the wing's lift, which puts more of the aircraft's weight on the wheels.
Your all wrong, With my Aeronautical degree from harvard and over 8000 hrs in the 747 cockpit. When reaching the outer marker and setting up the approach you SOP the spoilers to make them ARQ this way if there is any INOP the will override the redundency systems to make them AFLAC. This is text book. Now on landing you transverse the reverse thrusters this will make compression ratio drop to allow the AFI to activate when nose gear touches down. You need to go over your training manuels again!
@15chad15 u went to harvard and came out with an aeronautical degree?! Dude shut up. ur just saying random crap. do u think a lot of people understand SOP, ARQ, INOP, AFI, or AFLAC?! Ur making it sound more complicated than it probably is
@15chad15 Isn't this a near direct quote from the text, Multi-engine Operations in Five Easy Lessons by Capt. E. Fudd of Looneytunes Airways? I used that book to help me operate my blender.
@15chad15 I would suggest you learn how to spell ManuAls... :P before telling us you have an aviation degree from Harvard with over 8,000 hours in the cockpit of a 747.
@15chad15 You know what you're making no sense. I'm a 777 captain and a regular to 34L at Kingsford Smith (Sydney). The reason why spoilers were not deployed is that the parking zone is at the end of 34L and so the pilots have the full stretch of runway to stop, hence spoilers, or harsh braking and reverse thrusters are not necessary
You would still use the SPOILERS. To spill the lift off the wings, and compress the main body gear into the runway. Increasing braking efficiency, and to prevent a bounce.
Most likely for some reason the air/ground sensor did not trigger deployment, OR the servo was INOP, or they just forgot to arm them.
No really, didnt need to use speed brake early until a certain point to get to ther exit faster. But u do make a good point. I was just letting 'effective3 knw'
They are NOT SPEED BRAKES on the ground, they are SPOILERS.. they do NOT really slow the aircraft down. They Kill lift off the wings, and push the Main body gear into the runway to facillitate braking from the wheel brakes.
The use of spoilers are SOP, and you will fail a checkride for this.
If you need to roll out long. you still deploy spoilers, just do not use the autobrakes, and delay the deployment of thrust reversers.. You still deploy spoilers.
Looks like they forgot those spoilers, if the aircraft was so light that could have also caused some problems with the aircraft not settling on the runway
Good question on the speed brakes - it's United, but it was at least a full 20 seconds after TD that the brakes were deployed..... guess they depend alot more on the reverse thrusters and wheel brakes
No, the point of the speedbrakes is to change the movement of the air, reducing lift under the wings and increasing drag to hold the wheels on the runway, thus increasing braking efficiency. There may of course be a perfectly good reason they weren't used though tbh.
15chad15. You say you have an aeronautical degree yet you cant even spell properly. I hope im never on one of your fantasy flights

dual757 1 year ago
Auto speedbrake was likely inop, thus them having to manually deploy the ground spoilers.
Manually deploying them can give some significant pitch oscillations, so it is generally done very gingerly- this was a bit more than usual.

if you look carefully the nosewheel touches down very late which could be why the spoilers waited
CaptainSazzman 2 years ago
Autospoilers deploy on the compression of the main body gear, and has nothing to do with the nosewheel.
Trivia. Because of the large rudder the 747 is one of the only aircraft where you use thrust reversers before landing the nosewheel.
