having weight on the left side at the top is not a problem as long as that weight does not shift to your right side on the downswing or "reverse-pivot" ,as the pros say.
If u can manage that then u can call yourself a stacker. It's a great swing if you're a pirate with a peg leg.
Funny to read so many ignorant comments. Almost every tour player swings this way, more or less. This is nothing new, Plummer and Bennett just made us aware of it.
Stack and tilt ain't gonna fix your chicken wings, your swing is just shit mate lol. Im sure you don't get any power with your swing and stack and tilt is just going to make it weaker with your athletic prowess.
This is what my grandfather referred to as "popping the ball". We'd go to the driving range and he'd tell me these same things. Shorten the backswing, swing down, then follow the ball with your club. It made for good consistency and getting your swing back, but it wasn't a true/full swing....or maybe it is now???
body control is definitely not what this dude was born form, stack and tilt is for non-atheletic people who need that in order to pivot to control their swing without weight transfer, i.e. this homie in the video, drop your clubs and quit, people like you are the reason the general public doesn't recognize golf as a real sport
real players dont need stack and tilt. this guys swing was so terrible/useless/weak to begin with that any result this may have had is rendered invalid.
The conventional swing has far too many moving parts. The stack and tilt swing is far less complicated and far more consistant. Conventional airplanes had propellers. Come into the jet age.
MIKE AUSTIN WAS THE GREAT TEACHER IN THE WORLD OF GOLF AND HE HIT THE GOLF BALL 515 YARD AT AGE 64, DAN SHAUGER LEARNED FROM BEST THE TEACHER MIKE AUSTIN, I HAD SEVERAL LESSON FROM DAN AND NOW I HIT MY GOLF BALL STRAIGHT DOWN THE LINE NOW AND WITHOUT BACK PAIN AND HE HELP WITH MY PUTTING AND SHORT GAME, DAN HAS 2 BOOK AND 27 DVD AND HE WORKING ON 3RD BOOK NOW aperfectswing I PLAY A BETTER AROUND OF GOLF NOW AND WITHOUT BACK PAIN AND CHECKOUT DAN BOOT CAMP I DID HE HELP ME OUT ALOT GREAT TEACHER
stack and tilt isn't a good golf swing for anyone but most of all for high handicap players, if you slice the ball stack and tilt will get you to slice more...i might use this swing to get rid of a crazy duck hook but only as a drill for practice...and aaron baddeley was the player that made ppl try this and now he is back to a more conventional swing, he was a phenom as a teen and this swing set his career back 3 years.
sorry but that editor could have improved with covetional methods, he had so many faults he had no where to go but better. its a manipulative version of the golf swing and Hogan loaded into his right side and did not stack, he had little lateral movement but did not leave weight on left side, also his spine is always tilted away from target. please dont think he did because he really doesnt.
@flowerdrop1 Actually some guys with the best swings on tour have a version of this swing. If you look at Hogan he has a version of a stack and tilt. I use it and one thing it does is it keeps you a lot more centered. It may not be for eveyone though...
@lolraxjimmy Actually Hogan listed in one of his books about the front side being loaded during the back swing toward the target, not away from it. Wonder why all the teaching pros say, "Youll never hit it as good as Hogan but we will get you close." Thats because modern professionals dont teach the correct fundamentals.
Also, anyone notice all the "revamped" swings on tour now where all of a sudden its about keeping the weight foward....... lol, yeah SnT doesnt work.
@GrimTactics All the good pros who have used it have dropped it, basically saying it is junk. Sure some other pros are using, but they are hardly the best or even close to the best in the world. So it seems you;re the moron. It isn't my fault that you're a fan of a failed method.
I just started playing golf a month ago and my swing sucked! When I started I hooked the ball like crazy. My back was always stiff after playing and my muscles were very tight from forcing my swing. Two weeks ago I stumbled across the Stack-n-Tilt and after a few days at the range my swing totally changed. Not only am I hitting the ball straight but I added ten + yards to my drive. This worked wonders for me. My back feels great and my game has improved beyond my belief. Thanks Stack-n-Tilt!
Recently I shot some vids of my swing and found out that I naturally already play S&T. Probably because of my background in field hockey. in field hockey the weight in the downswing is completely on the left foot.
I believe that with S&T you naturally hit more down and through the ball, because your weight is shifted more forward. Also your hand tend to be more before the club face.
Same here Pete. Me and my wife changed to Stack and Tilt swing last year, and we are getting a lot more consistent control of the club head as it catches the ball on the down swing. Just loves it.
I guess i can eat my words. I tried SandT again and the compression on the golf ball is terrific due to the forward swing bottom. I think if you have a problem with taking the club back flat in a conventional swing, then SandT could be the answer you are looking for because you don't need to transfer your weight from rback to front. Just turn/ turn and watch the ball fly straight or with a draw and you divot positon improves dramatically.
Im goint to eat my words too. the S&T worked great on the course which shocked the hell out of me since it feels so unnatural with the constricted muscle movements but then again what the hell is so natural about the conventional swing which requires timing, shifting and uncoiling and a 2 plain swing. No wonder even seasoned amateurs are bad ball strikers on the course.
Sandt is just another version of what you need to do at impact which is move your swing bottom four inches ahead of the ball at impact no matter what club you are using. Sandt may help you with achieving this but it kills your club head speed and makes you finish with a reverse "C" finish which will utimately hurt your back. I recommend reading Bobby Clampett's book on the Impact zone to learn how to move your swing bottom forward the conventional way .
Lesson #3 _Never listen to Peter Finch or anyone who get a job as editor of a national golf publication who has a swing like this comming into the job. You would think they would have requirements for these guys.......... so they knew what to EDIT!!!!!!!!!!
@portales2010 interesting theory, I wonder if the editor of sports illus is the best athlete that ever lived. His golf swing has nothing to do with if he can effectively run a magazine. Since you obviously have it figured out, why don't you start your own magazine, oh wait, if I follow lesson #1 I won't be able to read it.
You are 100 percent correct sir follow rule #1. Hey these guys go into this buisness for the money (generated by adds). It is just a quick fix for the guy who has a hard time breaking 80. If followed correctly it applies some basic fundamental that are elemental to every swing but if you do those you can get away with a bunch and make almost anythin work. If you are interested in those fundamentals I will be happy to share.
I certainly respect your opinion, but if you came to that conclusion using the logic that since some players have gone away from it, then you are sadly mistaken. Is Butch Harmon full of crap because Tiger left him? Besides, all the top name teachers have differnt opinions about the golf swing. There are popular opinions and not so popular opinions.
@shl102673 you have a point and there is a lot of different swing theorys but in general they mostly include a lot of the same principles and in my opinion a well taught traditional method is better than this method.
I had the good fortune to get advice from more teaching pros than I can name. No one of note really. During the time I worked with Mike for a short stint, I felt like his approach to the golf swing was the most logical. Mike wasn't published in Golf Digest yet, but what he taught made sense to me. I hope everyone approaches S&T as they do any other lesson they see in GD or any other publication. If you don't agree with it, move on; or at least provide substance to your reason for diagreement.
That just means you try to impliment whatever crap these guys think looks good and will sell a magizine! Yea the problem with magazines is you could be a CEO!! They are not teachers or professionals, just average golfers giving you their two cents. There is a big market to keep golfers guessing about what should I do now! Stop reading the freaking magazines and see a good pro!! it will save you years of frustration. Gold digest is golf Porn. It fakes the truth.
I have been using this method out of my own experimentation for a long time.
This video vindicates me and confirms what I have always thought to be correct.
It is okay to pivot on your left foot in your backswing and to tilt your left shoulder. Then in downswing move your hips forward as you turn.Lastly, remember to arch backwards so that upper body lags the buckle/waist at the finish.
@steo9347 lol, what exactly have golfers been doing for hundreds of years except play bad golf? all joking aside, you should really learn about the history of the golf swing (it's changed over the years). what most of these golf philosophies lack is how equipment has impacted the golf swing. (and vise versa) oh, and otherfactors, playing conditions like grass type & condition, ground conditions, and much more.
@shl102673 if this is such a good method then how come aaron baddeley and mike weir have abandoned it and gone back to there old swings. My guess is because its a load of crap
I gotta wonder though. Did your game improve due to S&T or just because you worked at it. Had you taken some traditional swing lessons would it have improved just as much?
Listen everyone that doubts this guys handicap: He is the SENIOR editor for Golf Digest. I don't think he would have a lot of room to "cheat" his handicap. He probably plays with some great pga players and coaches and gets tips from them all. His swing may not look the part, but I am fairly confident this guy is a legit 10 handicap.
I am a ten handicap and I used to be a lot worse. My biggest problem was topping the ball causing it to only go a few feet. VERY FRUSTRATING. I managed to fix my swing myself just by working on hand eye coordination. Though, I have a lot of friends that top the ball frequently and I try to teach them this stack and tilt method because it works. I am just curious if the stack and tilt method is good for driving to becasue ive always heard to put your weight on your back foot while driving.
I use s&t now for some weeks and it works for me very well from sandwedge to 4 iron. But my 3 wood (from tee) and driver it does not work yet. Maybe someone can tell me wat to do. Maybe the ball more in front off stance?
While working on my own game, I came upon most of these "tips" before I knew what they were called. Maybe something more on it can help me fill in the holes.
I'm a six handicap and when you see me hit only two fairways and two greens but still shoot a 78 you will see a great short game can make up for poor hitting.
This guy could be a 10. given he is a decent putter.
I agree with you guys with his swing BUT not agree I play regularly with a guy who moves both feet all over the place as if he walks off his back swing and walking in the shot. I can see lines on his palm when hes griping his club (seriously), his grip on his putter is all on the shaft, he plays a mismatched set of irons and is a 9 to 10 handicap consistently. Go figure that out.
I don't know why he can't be a ten handicap? I am a 14 and have what most people would call a rushed and onorthodox swing, but it goes straight and far, I just hit the ball.
i went to the butch harmon school of golf after my senior year of hs....he had me do similar drills, mainly the punch shot drill...i went from being a 10 handicap down to breaking 80 about 60 percent of the time...one years time...no bullshit...i can put up the videos of me at his school
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This swing is very helpful to me because I can't make a full swing due to shoulder surgery which restricts my right shoulder from rotating back to make a full swing. In a way, this was my swing before the " inventor " thought this up. I have been hitting 300+ drives for about 2 years....maybe someone has been watching and learning from me :)
is it hard to do with driver an fairway woods? you need to sweep a little more with those makes sense with irons and found i hit alot straighter with it i only loose about 10 yards so i have to take 1 extra club.can this method work with long driving?thanks
hey i found it very hard to do it with driver and fairway wood to.. but i sorta imagined a ball in the centre of my stance and balance over that and i hit the ball great
this guys swing is horrible and doesnt do this method much justice lol...but if you work on these drills right it will work good on all your clubs...you would be suprised
Congrats Peter Finch, you have been taught how to hit a 'classic' punch shot.
