The biggest difference between Lomac and OF is that Lomac is a game for players, OF is a simulator for virtual pilots. Ramp start of an F16 can be done in 2 minutes - is it a long time? Yes, of course I know, is not a just one stupid button on the keyboard like in the Lock on, LOL :)
Falcon 4 is the original which all the mods are based on. And the reason it is so amazing, is that the world around you is 'real'. Its the worlds only real dynamic campaign, there are no scripts. You can watch the combat taking place at the front lines, hear the radio calls of guys in combat. You just look around at the world and it blows you away, there's so much going on.
And with mods like FreeFalcon 5, you can fly anything from an An2 or MiG21 to a F16, F18(with carrier ops) etc.
@PICLex Totally agree. It's the real word, full of atmosphere of war, everything is moving there, interfering with other units, you can feel the rush hour in the air. Falcon is the best what meet me in my life, love this complexity of avionics, where everythink needs to be set manually, step-by-step in the clickable cocpit. That's the difference between Falcon and Lockon between a sim and a game.
I just got OFset up yesterday on my mahine :) incredible Avionics and the sniper pod is useful in target identification. one major down side and the reason I may turn back to AF: ther's soooo much activity at the flot that my high performance gaming computer built to handle FSX on full cant even get more than 5 fps, fortunately that's only at the flot line. unfortunately Ive been in several dogfights there recently and nearly crashed because of it. overall amazing reguardless! :)
lol avionics are the Computers, Dials, Guages, the Control panels and switches, almost all the electronic parts of the jet. the Wepons do behave more realistically in Falcon but also Lock on has Scripted campaign missions, whereas all the Falcon sereis have a battlefield where hundreds of airplanes carry out their missions on a realtime clock. And that makes for a mission where anything could happen, a pair of Mig-21s could be launching for their mission as you fly over their base for example.
@YaDad23 If you need just arcade flying with more or less realistics than Lock-on is for you. If you would like to go deeper, needs better realistics and simulation than OF is the right choise
Open Falcon is the most realistic and one of the most complex sims i've played. it has the usual drawbacks of free software, but i find it much better than the payware Falcon 4 Allied Force
its open source and free download, but Lead Pursuit bought the right of the Falcon 4 series in a abandonware auction, and Open Falcon is somewhat illegal (bullshit). you need a 1998 Falcon 4.0 cd and then google for something like OF4.5 installer.

installed all the patches, open falcon 4.3, 4.4, and 4.4.1. however i still cannot run the sim at all. when i click on the desktop icon the main menu loads but then crashes back to the desktop screen with the same error message stating: F4-BMS has encountered a problem and needs to close. what do i do to fix this? i don't believe its a firewall setting because ive also tried it w/ the firewall off. please help!
what website did you download the open falcon program from? were any other patches of falcon required prior to downloading and installing open falcon? how big was the size of the open falcon download (megabites,gigabites,etc.)?
The main Open Falcon patch is about 535mb. Do a search for Open Falcon 4.3. This mod isn't legal so you wont find it for download at any website. But it is out there ;)
I must warn you, Falcon 4 is probably the most realistic military simulator you can get, it takes hundred of hours to learn to fly this. I have about 200 hours in the game and still havnt learned everything

Yes, Open Falcon and FreeFalcon contains a lot of cockpits ... if you choose a plane without cockpit you will get those default from F-16.

It's probably trying to load the opening movie which might cause problems. You could try the command line switch -nomovie I think.
