I don't know Tom Cruise in real life and i doubt that anyone who's commented here does, therefore i have no defense of the man as a human being. What i will say is that he's a truly honest and passionate actor that takes his profession seriously. And he's passionate about life. My family rented Risky Business on vhs from Blockbuster when it first came out and though there are many of his more recent films that i've never bothered to watch, he is one of the greatest in actors in cinema history.

The actor who played Raymond in this film portrayed an autistic savant, Laurence Kim Peek. This may have been an accurate portrayal for this specific person, but certainly not for the rest of the people labelled autistic. I have two family members with autism who are high functioning, and neither of them act like the autistic character in this movie.

@MiaCries Thanks for the info. I actually have two friends who are on different ends of the autism spectrum. I have also frequented my mother's workplace, as she is a speech pathologist and has a caseload with at least five autistic students. Thank you for your input though.

@ELBlove7 Honestly, it's difficult or nearly impossible to really know unless they get tested for it. And it's really nothing to worry about unless that person wants special/extended privileges in school. My brother needed the diagnosis in school, only because other students would start trouble with him and he'd crumble from the social pressures. He would be given more time on tests after class, and the teachers would extend help to him more freely if he needed it with medical papers.

There are a lot of classic movies on YouTube in one shot.This is a wonderful movie, well acted by both Hoffman and Cruise.They act so well together.They play off each other in so many touching scenes and moments with great comedic timing. Dustin was exceptional but Tom had to carry a lot of the movie dialogue wise. He also had to change the most in character, but they both are great. Thanks for this!

Always have loved this movie. Everyone talks about Hoffman's great acting, and it's true, but this time, I realized how wonderful Tom Cruise was...this is a film about the relationship between the two brothers, and it would not have worked without Cruise; also he shows how Charlie is opened up and transformed by trying so hard to understand and being in relationship with Ray. Cruise did deserve more recognition for this.
