thanks man everyday after school i go out in the driveway and shoot 75 pucks and i've noticed a huge improvement just after about 3 days my shot was getting better. thanks again!
Hey guys, found a great video in which you can really see nicely how the toe of the stick touches the ice the first. This was the missing link for me.The shot is done by Ron Hainsey a NHL d player.
As i can't post links, the video is called Science of Hockey: Slap Shot
So the only factor to how high or low your shot is is where you point your stick on the follow thru? theres no difference in the way you approach the shot on wether or not you want the puck up high or to stay on the ice?
what difference in your stance is there if you are taking a slapshot while moving towards the net? I just got on a jv team for a high school and can't take a good stationary or mobile slapshot. any advice towards this?
My Step dad tells me when i hit the ice, my blade should be cupping almost OVER the puck is this right or wrong??? EXAMPLE: the[o] is the puck. and the [I] is the blade... RIGHT: o\ WRONG: oI
...and he says the only thing that should be opening up the blade is the flex of the stick is this right???!
I just want to first say THANK YOU! Your video was exactly what I needed. I actually had everything down except one piece which I couldn't figure out. I wasn't lifting the puck at all and wasn't getting any power but after watching your video and within 20 seconds of following your instruction. I was shooting them bar down and picking corners off! (btw, the missing piece was not striking the puck with the toe, hence I wasn't fully utilising the stick's flex)
One thing, u never want to hit the ice before you hit the puck because it will slow down the velocity from the sick to the puck and you will break your $200 stick. Beside's you can get the same amount or more flex when you hit ALL PUCK NO ICE!!!!!!
@ocweather You will break your stick if you hit the ice like a foot before the puck because i will flex too much. If you hit it 4-6 inches before then you get the perfect amount of flex which transfers into harder shots and doesn't break the stick. And no you don't get the same amount or more flex when you just hit the puck. It will be like you slapped the puck and your shot will suck
finally!! been trying to learn slap shot fundamentals by going through youtube videos .. i went through about 25 of them that were horrible and taught me nothing. Your video is very thorough and it communicates everything i need to go and practice and get it down. thanks. i'm now headed to the rink on a mission to dominate.
@thelawless999 awesome man. How is the practice working? If you have a back yard where you can set up a net and plexiglass shooting surface over the summer, then this will be very beneficial.
@1125kman In my opinion the puck should make contact with the stick about 3 inches in from the toe. This relies on you having enough downward pressure on the stick into the ice to create flex, especially with the new sticks. But under no circumstance should you be making contact with the heel. Once you practice enough with the right fundamenals you will hear and feel the difference. Hope this helps.
@TheMusicDude1997 Thanks for the tip. I haven't had the chance to make any in awhile but look to add a lot this summer. Do you have a suggestion for a good priced mic?
I didn’t catch your name.. I have been back playing for 3 + years now Disabled Vet and play on a New Team Starting in Twin Cities Area Minnesota Warriors (Combat Injured and or Service Connected Disabilities) The tea is stemmed off the Washington DC Warriors (Vets from Bethesda Naval and Walter Reed Hospitals in DC Area) anyway I have been struggling with this shot now (we might be no slap shot)
@Dinosfenderamps My name is Brett Henning. I would think the league would be no slapshot but you never know. Send me a private message with your address and I will send you some of the pucks 7 Pre-Game Habits of Pro Hockey Players that I wrote. Cheers.
MAYBE but I still have tons of issues the blade torque’ing out of my hands to not hitting properly off the blade or where to I have had every person on team give me every tip including coach I still screw it up UNLESS close to the boards screwing around then I hit perfectly.. anyway you can send your feedback and more tip so the stick doesn’t come out of my hands after striking the puck ( deansemperfi@hotmail.com ) Thanx Dean US Marine Minnesota
Dean, Thanks for you service and congrats on starting up the team. This is a huge issue because your blade is striking the ice at such force behind the puck that it will turn in your hand. Especially when you are coming down with the toe part of the blade as seen in the video. The biggest thing is to alot of grip strength with the bottom hand. I have some videos on how to increase that in the Score100goals page. I think you maybe concentrating too much on where your hitting
the ice instead of free flowing with the motion. And this just comes with practice. Concentrate more on your fluid motion by twisting your upper body. If you get this down then that will be second nature so the motion doesn't come outside or inside the puck but rather your stick hits the same spot on the ice in front of the puck. This will help alot. Sorry about the rambling nature but this is the hardest shooting motiont to explain.
hey i got a question, im practicing on my slapshot alot but i always shoot them way too high, any tips for keeping it a bit lower but still off the ice?
@zx420xz The first thing is too really get the fundamentals down as shown in the video. If you are slicing at the puck then there is no way to control it. But if you shot like in the video then it's a matter of controlling your follow through. The tip of your balde should be putting at the target. So if you follow through high pointing at the top of the net then it should go high and vice versa. Hope this helps.
thanks for the great advice. One question though. In your opinion, does the flex of a stick make it more or less powerful. I have a 100 flex, I was thinking of getting an 85. should i stick with the 100 flex or invest in the 85 flex
this is soo awesome!!! the second i finished watching this i tried it out and the puck broke(I play roller hockey and i shoot on a wall so that's why it broke)
Lol I luv being huge. I am 12 years old, 5'8 and 160 pounds. I have one of the best shots in my league but the best part of being a head taller than everyone else is that when they try to check me they all bounce off and fly to the ground and I skate on like nothin happened. Lol.
what about the height of the stick , if i use a stick thats about 2 inches below my chin my shot usually goes where i want it too but its about medium power , but a stick that just hits my nose is almost twice as powerful but is alot harder to control , any tips?
great video. a lot of people think the bigger the wind up, the harder the shot. which clearly is not the case. great job explaining the hip movements.

WOW! I love to play hockey i am a right wing and 14 years i am good a taking wrist shoots but not good at all in slap shoots. After watching your video i FINALY got it. I always shot with the senter of my blade and later that day when we had hockey practise i tryed with the tip of the blade and there you go i got it. thanks so much!!!! this video is so great and really helps if you follow your tips. the slap shoot is now my favorit shoot to takebecause of you and now i am so good at it.
cool. Make sure though you are still releasing the puck quickly though. Goalies are so good these days that it's hard to blow it through them even with a rocket of a slap shot. If you can shoot it while they are moving into position then you have a better chance of scoring.
Great video, I never heard of using the toe of the stick to induce the flex and get the bend behind your shot, so thank you for that. One thing I've heard too that helped me out a LOT was to keep youe eye on the puck, just like a golf swing, keep your head still, eyes on the disc through the whole swing, Unless someone's coming after you, then you may want to look up. What I'd like to know ishow you control the lift? No matter what I do, the shot rises, I'd like to keep it down.
No problem. The easiest way to control it that I have learned is to follow through low. Wherever you point your toe of the blade on the follow through is the general direction and height of the puck on net. This won't work if you slice at it but if you follow the above directions and make contact with the toe of your stick on the ice then this works.
@oinkubberchicken No problem. check out the torque video that I made as well. That is where you will get a lot of your power. If you have any more questions hit me back up.
@AdogandSteveywonder Don't strike the puck with the heel of you stick. That completely takes the curve of your blade out of the shot. If you don't believe me then look at a few pictures of NHL stars taking slapshots at the striking points.
i practice my slapshot every day, its pretty much my favourite shot to take, but i just cant get them.. after watching this video i went outside and took a few shots, in my opinion they are 110% better ! thanks alot for the help !!
That really helped me and now my slapshot is ok! I am thinking about getting one of the skill pads , would you know where to get those, and would they work for practicing.
these skillpads are made by KwikRink out of MInnesota. They are pretty expensive though. They definitely would work for practicing. If this is too expensive you can buy a small shooting pad too blast puck off of in the summer when there's no ice. You just need that, a net, and some pucks. That is what I grew up practicing on. I am trying to make a video with the pad that goes into the basics of all of these shots by the end of the summer.
iv been shooting on my skill pad and i can get a good shot off, when im on skates i cant get a good shot.. expecially when my skates are facing the net.. i can take a slapshot better being sideways to the net... anytips?
It's tough going to the ice from shooting on a skill pad because you're moving into the shot and pushing off a little blade on your back foot instead of your shoe. If you're facing the net (toes are pointing toward the net) then you should be using a wrist shot where you pull the puck into your body. Check out my video Advanced Hockey Wrist shot for help on that.
With the slapshot you should always be pushing toward the net off your back foot. Then the biggest problem that
I have found is the puck placement in your stance (just inside the front foot about 1.5 to 2 feet away from the body). Out on the ice the puck is moving and you're moving so it's hard to line that up. Try this drill:
Line up 10 pucks in a row along the blueline. Shoot them rapid fire so you have to adjust your feet and puck placement as you move down the line. This will help you get comfortable with the pucks distance from your body and where it should be in your stance. Hope this helps.
Thanks. I teach kids at Athletic Republic in Santa Ana, Ca. My dad has been involved in the NHL for like 40 years so I grew up with the game and it's fun to make these videos to kind of pass on what I have learned over the years. Let me know of any specific topics that you want to know more about. I also just started a blog at score100goals(dot)com that I post info at. Thanks for the comment
@MegaLaxman23 i thought he was on damn asphalt no duh hes not on ice.. it looks likes hes in his hockey shop or something of the sort on synthetic ice
@hockeynut342 Yeah for sure. The biggest thing with deking is that you have to sell it with your shoulder and head. Go to my video Hockey : Advanced Stickhandling using a head and shoulder fake. This was taught to me by an old time Russian coach and really works. Let me know how it goes.
Hey Mike, I noticed the Anaheim Ducks Rinks are using your shooter tutors, props for that. I'm in the rookie league and the tutor is better than the goalies we have on our team haha!
But yah if you can get up a video of three mistakes people make with wrist shot, and also the proper way to snap shot also, that would be great. I know ice time aint cheap, but when you get a chance thanks!
Yeah a couple of people have said that. Finally got the tripod so it doesn't look so Blair Witch Project and know I need to focus on sound. I use the flip hd mini and have looked for a mic that connects with this camera but there doesn't seem to be any. Do you have any recommendations or do I have to use a different camera. Funds are tight. Thank you
finally someone know the right technique... you guys should make a snapshot vid.. because iv tried tweaking a lot with that shot and i still cant get it
@charg3rsfan2185 Thank you. The snapshot is very tricky and in my opinion there is a couple of different ways to release the puck. Next time I get the chance to get out on the ice I will for sure explain how I was taught to shoot it. It's a lot of wrist action as the name says, but the main thing is the quickness of the release. thanks for the comment and recommendation.
thanks man everyday after school i go out in the driveway and shoot 75 pucks and i've noticed a huge improvement just after about 3 days my shot was getting better. thanks again!

Hope this helps.

can you make a video about deking. Im probally the only LW on the team that cant deke well
hockeynut342 1 year ago

I know ice time aint cheap, but when you get a chance thanks!

good video, but next to impossible to hear Brett talking even with volume all the up. Recommend a clip mic.

@HockeyDaddio
Thank you

finally someone know the right technique... you guys should make a snapshot vid.. because iv tried tweaking a lot with that shot and i still cant get it
charg3rsfan2185 1 year ago
@charg3rsfan2185 Thank you. The snapshot is very tricky and in my opinion there is a couple of different ways to release the puck. Next time I get the chance to get out on the ice I will for sure explain how I was taught to shoot it. It's a lot of wrist action as the name says, but the main thing is the quickness of the release. thanks for the comment and recommendation.
