I heard both FAMU and SU play this in person in '86, and both were great. Both were clean and well executed - just different styles. It's good to see that FAMU's musical philosophy has remained consistent over the years while most HBCU bands are into those dumb blast-a-thons.
It is a blessing to have the ability to compose those signature endings this band play. It's one of the many great attributes that make FAMU the great musical unit it is.
Ok am I the only one who noticed that this clip is from 1986. So clearly this was not a poor choice of song for them..... at that time this song was #1. AND it is a good arrangement (thats why da 100 still plays it today). ALSO if you didnt know EVERY marching band plays a concert selection.....and thats what this is. (O yea a concert piece is a slow song if you didnt know)
i listened to su arrangement and this one. and im a huge marching 100 fan. on this arrangent, i didnt feel the bounce from the bones and the drummers didnt come thru at all for me. i think the base lines were cool especially the walk they did, but didnt pust the tempo enough. s.u. takes this one
"Bland" would not be the word I use. "Different" would suit it because the arrangement is different. In SU's arrangement, the "slides" are playing the melody. It sounds as though the euphoniums, horns, and woodwinds are playing the melody in FAMU's arrangement. Does any former FAMU band member out there know exactly who plays the melody on the 1st verse? I would like to know.
I was 'Rank-Sarg.' that year. We 1st show-cased 'Sweet Love' in Philly,PA @ The then 'Liberty-Bowl' FAMU vs. Temple U.,..Man The 'Whole' Of RFK-Stadium was 'Sanging-Along' w/ THE-100!!! ...That was CLASSIC!!!
Yeah!Hubba that!Richard Beckford was an extremely talented Dude in 'The 100',his leadership as a section leader,& bandsman made him sought of iconic cats really respect him alot on 'The Original Patch'I personally remember watching'Beck'@ his craft,& being reminded of'The 100 members from the past(60's-70's)
In those days,as it was in my tenoir in'The 100'(Live-85,Sudler Award Recipients For Our Predecessors On THE-PATCH!)They/We wore gym shorts & combat boots during practice! For REAL-STOOMPERS & WHOOPERS,tennis shoes just did'nt cut it,it pretty much may have been instrumental in the lack of precision in the marching technique lately.Specifically the consistancy of the POINT & DRIVE,90o-knee/leg lift.Just a thought personally.
Jazz Great/Educator;Wycliff Gordon was Trombone Section that year.FAMU-Asst.Dir.Of Bands;Dr.S.Chipman was Trumpet Section Leader. The tradition of excellence continues! Enjoy! HUBBA '100'

to me famu is the best band around...but that's at certain times tho, even tho they're mainly numba 1, still times sometimes....it may b a moment where bcc or su may put them out of business....and nobody can disagree either...cuz no band can stay numba one
I'm so glad... I am from FAMU!! Love this song...love the bands rendition of it!

I feel ya man. The bone line is a lil bland compared to southern's. I like southern's arrangement better.

if im not mistaken, the horns, baritones, alto saxes and clarinets carry that first verse.
