@zamoramexrevenge This video is not stupid. It's very informative to Americans who think "Hispanic" is a race. Now on the topic of mestizos, true they vary in phenotype, but the examples I gave were some of the most common types. The idea of the video is to show Americans some familiar celebrities that are famous for them to relate to. I had to start to limit the examples, because I didn't want to make the video too long. Notice the examples get smaller toward the end.
@DevilMayhem666 No, I'm basing it on a genetic study of Puerto Rico. But again, race in society today is based on one's phenotype. Because you don't know what you have in your blood from centuries back. Just like in the U.S., white Americans are clearly defined as white Americans, but most have some admixture from Native Americans or blacks, but in the U.S., they are still clearly defined as whites.
@TheViper831 80% of us are not like that. Most Spaniards are nice people. Generous people that would give you the shirt off their backs. As far as speaking the dialect correctly, not even all of Spain speaks it correctly. Every region has it's dialect, just like in Latin America. What happened hundreds of years ago we can't take back, those were stupid idiots that has put a scar on our nationality. But all we can do is be humble like the many Spaniards that came after the conquista.
@TheViper831 Self entitlement? Wtf? We are living in the 21st century, everyone is equal here. No one feels self entitled here, especially me and all the rest of the Spaniards that I know.
@TheViper831 What does Christopher Colombus have to do with this? You are jumping from subject to subject. Why, because it's in relation to Indians? So what if they were ignorant, most people of the world were at that time. I guess when they said they discovered it, it's because they didn't know it was there and then they found it. I'm sure that's what they meant. I can "discover" Easter Island if I didn't know it was there, even if there are people on it. Guido is racist btw.
@TheViper831 "Then how are Caucasians that within that race includes the lightest of the Europeans to the darkest of the Indians of India?" Because, as I was telling Isleño, the process of defining Races is a SOCIAL one, and psychologically speaking (and this has been proved in Facial Recognition studies) most humans do not place as much importance on skin pigmentation as on other facial features such as the area around the eyes and upper cheek, then lower cheeks, chin, etc etc.
@TheViper831 I say he is uneducated and stupid. I am white in race, hispanic in ethnicity. What other race is a Spaniard supposed to be? Stupid people.
@TheViper831 See my previous comment. When lookagain77 was talking about race as being phenotype, he was meaning the racial sub group terms that are used more frequently to describe race. White, black, Native American, East Asian, East Indian, Arabs, etc. That's what he meant, I'm sure. It's not like people go around using the 3 main races as racial identifiers like seeing an East Indian and saying "oh, there is a Caucasian man" and sees an Arab and says, "oh there's a Caucasian".
@TheViper831 The U.S. sees him as a black man because the U.S. traditionally seen anyone with black ancestry as black. Because of the one drop rule. The rule is now extinct, but the thinking is not. People in the U.S. still identify someone mixed with black as a black person. In Latin America, he would be seen as mulatto, not black, which is true because he is not black, he is mixed race. Continued....
@TheViper831 That we all evolved out of Africa. Humans are one big family, but races are just the variations in Humans. Races evolved due to climate, diet and way of life.
@TheViper831 it's because Native Americans descended from Asians who crossed the land bridge from Eastern Siberia into Alaska during the last ice age. The people who are the ancestors of the Native Americans are the Chukchi people of Eastern Siberia. They look similar with similar customs, dance, clothing, instruments, music, etc.
@TheViper831 You are just against the whole topic of race, but race is real. You can listen to all these liberals with "race is only a social construct" crap, but that's bullshit. Race is both scientific and social. Scientifically, Caucasoids, Negroids, and Mongoids differ from each other substantially. Now the sub races among them differ from each other. You say Negroids are the most diverse, but did you see the Caucasoid group? Don't even look alike. Most Negroes do.
@IslenoGutierrez Most people that claim Race to be a "social construct" do so because they've heard that the Scientific community has claimed so. While that is TRUE, most people using the "social construct" line do not use it PROPERLY, and thus, when most people hear it they MISTAKENLY equate it with the person claiming that Races "do not exist". What the Scientific community was referring to is THE PROCESS of classifying someone to a 'Race' as being a 'social construct'.
@lookagain77 I agree. It's that it is said that race is a social construct, but the only meaning they are talking about when they mention this, is that people are admitted into "in group memberships" some which are based on privilege, some the opposite. Some people take it to mean race is not biological, but truth is, race is phenotype and bone structure. Whites look different from blacks because of variation in phenotype, which is what race describes.
@IslenoGutierrez "Race" in general, WITHOUT specific categories, is just an UNDEFINED cluster of common Phenotypes. But, in order for that to be useful for any practical purposes we have to DEFINE those clusters in some meaningful way (to us). This process of defining, of ultimately coming up with the names and boundaries of a defined 'Race', is entirely a social process, and although the process is BASED on objective observation ("REAL" stuff), it is NOT a 'scientific' process.
@lookagain77 Race is still real. Phenotypes are real. We are not all the same. Your race is your phenotype. But not only phenotype, bone structure, even blood types are common among certain groups.
@lookagain77 I thought you were starting to go the "race is not real" route. If you were not, then don't worry about it. Race does have a scientific relation when speaking of Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid, when referring to cranial and bone structures, even blood types and haplogroups. But White and Black are social names given to subgroups of European Caucasoids and Sub-Saharan African Negroids. But the way I see race is, that it's just the variations in the Human race.
@TheViper831 No contradiction. All these "races" which are actually sub races, belong to one of three main races, but some of the mixed races belong to 2 or all 3 racial groups. The Whites and Middle Easterners in this video are sub races of the Caucasian race. The East Asians are Mongoloids and the Blacks are Negroids, the Mestizo belongs to both Caucasian and Mongoloid. Mulatto belongs to Caucasian and Negroid, Zambo to Mongoloid and Negroid and Pardo to all three.
@TheViper831 No need to do homework. Indians of India are classified as Caucasians. Caucasian does not mean just Europeans. Actually Europeans, Arabs, Jews, North Africans, Persians, Indians and people like Afghans and Pakistanis. Only three races in the world...Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid. We all fall under one of the groups. Since you are Mestizo, you are half Caucasoid, half Mongoloid. I'm Caucasoid.
@TheViper831 of course there is, that's the characteristics pertaining to race. Also, Jews are part of the Mediterranean subgroup belonging to the Caucasian race.
@TheViper831 Social construct definition: A social construct is anything that exists as a product of human social interaction instead of by virtue of objective, human-independent existence. Social construct my ass. So I look this way, with this color skin, this shape of nose, these color eyes, this shape of cranium, because of human social interaction? Bullshit. Race is the phenotypical variation in Humans. Cranium, bone structure, skin, hair, facial features, blood types, etc.
Nice vid my friend. Since you are one of the few persons that can answer a question without spitting out an insult in YouTube and you are very interested in heritage, I have a question for you, just curiosity, I just want to see your take on this. If someone is born on Puerto Rico but both parents are 100% Cuban. Does that makes him/her a Cuban-Puerto Rican?
@iFupTrolls A person born in Puerto Rico from Cuban parents are Cuban-Puerto Rican. Perfect example is Carlos Ponce. His parents are Cuban by nationality, but he was born in Puerto Rico after they fled Cuba from Castro. He is racially White, because his ancestors were from Europe, but he is Latin American because he was born in Latin America. As far as a Puerto Rican, any race can be one. You can't be white race if your dad is black race. You would be mulatto.
@IslenoGutierrez Then it is very hard to tell a person's race without looking to all of his/her ancestors. If you see me in person without knowing that my dad is black, you would think I'm white. My skin is very light and my hair is dark brown, I don't have any of the features of a black person and I'm not adopted (that I know of, haha, joking). I was going to ask you, what do you think makes a Puerto Rican but thats another subject since nationality is not the same as race. (continued)
@iFupTrolls I don't understand how if your dad is black, you don't have any African features. But let's just say you look completely White, your dad is black so you are not white, but mulatto. Yes, most races are not pure, but many are fairly homogenous. Race in society is pretty much viewed by phenotype. If society sees you as white, which no known ancestor is non-white, then you are white. If you have some known non-white ancestry, then you will be viewed as having admixture.
@IslenoGutierrez You sound like you don't believe that I'm white, I can send you a picture but then that won't prove anything as I can send you any picture. But I have nothing to gain by lying, my looks are from my mother's side of my family where everyone is white, my dad's side all my uncles and aunts are black. It is very common in Puerto Rico, even I have cousins on my dad's side of my family that look "pure" white when only one of the parents is white (continue)
@iFupTrolls If you are half black, you are not a person of the White race. Your skin may be light and you may not look very African, but if your dad is black, you are mulatto. That's just the truth.
@IslenoGutierrez you're missing my point, I know I'm a mulatto and I'm proud of it as I'm proud of my black heritage more than the white one. My point is that you can't tell a person's race just by looking at them, therefore this video is a shallow way to categorize people as belonging to a specific race.
@iFupTrolls "you can't tell a person's race just by looking at them" Race is purely based on Phenotypes not Genotypes. The whole point behind 'race' categories is that they're based simply on looks, this is the official definition of the word 'race' (when used for humans). Perhaps what you meant to say was the following: "you can't tell a person's GENETIC ANCESTRY just by looking at them" That would make a lot more sense. Genetic Ancestry =/= Race. They're two different things.
@lookagain77 This is true. People automatically assign you to a race due to what your phenotype looks like, not genotype, as most don't know your genotype. We go by phenotype, unless your admixture is known. For instance, if I seen a picture of iFupTrolls and he looked completely White European, then I'd automatically assign him to the white race, but now that I know his dad is black, even when he looked white, I'd assign him to the mulatto race.
@lookagain77 I understand your point. I'm just using the logic of the person who posted the video. Following his logic a person can be white, with dark brown hair (like me) but because my dad is black I can't be considered white. I'm just picking his brain, I don't agree with his point of view but I can respect an opinion.
@IslenoGutierrez Mainly because of history. The Puerto Rican race is a mix of Spanish, Africans and Tainos. Spanish people were the ones who got to Puerto Rico and made the Tainos slaves. When the Tainos started dying because of slavery then they brought the Africans to do the same job. I'm not saying they started slavery but they clearly supported it.
@iFupTrolls Not all Puerto Ricans are triracial. Actually, some are white, some are black, some are mulatto, some are mestizo and some are pardo (triracial). Actually most are not triracial.
@iFupTrolls See my previous comment. You can't put all Spaniards in a box. Of course there were the soldiers that came in the beginning, but there were also later Spaniards that came to Puerto Rico with families. I'm Canarian Spanish, and Spaniards from the Canary Islands of Spain came in the 18th and 19th centuries to Puerto Rico in large numbers and inhabited the towns of Hatillo, Lares, Arecibo and Camuy. Not all Spaniards to Puerto Rico was conquistadors.
@IslenoGutierrez I get your point and is a valid one. It just makes me mad when people celebrate the day Christopher Columbus arrived to Puerto Rico, like it was a good thing but you're right. I can't blame all Spaniards for what a group of twisted individuals did.
@iFupTrolls I'm glad you got my point. All these Latinos think we all were in the Americas killing and enslaving people when it was mainly a group of sick twisted individuals. Most Spaniards came after the conquest as farmers, fishermen and merchants. Many came with families. But Latinos are not being taught this, only about the conquistadors, which to me, were like trying to stop the twisted U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba or ones doing bad things in Iraq.
@IslenoGutierrez (continuation) in fact, one particular aunt married a white guy with blue eyes Puerto Rican also and they had 3 kids, two sons and one daughter. The older son is black, then comes the daughter which has dark blond hair and green eyes, and last is the youngest son which has straight blond hair with brown eyes. If you compare the three of them, the youngest son doesn't look at all like the others, they look almost as if they weren't related. But by your definition he is mulatto
@IslenoGutierrez my point being that is almost impossible, at least in Puerto Rico, to classify someone as mullato, white or any other mix just by looking at them. Maybe you should change Carlos Ponce to mulatto or mix because if his parents are from Cuba, there has to be one black or mix individual in his ancestors. Also Ricky Martin's dad is not white, if something, he is a mix as his skin color is dark, not black but what we call "trigueño"
@IslenoGutierrez (continuation) Back to races, I would go as far as to hypothesize that today, there are only a few, if none, pure races as it is very probable that somewhere in a person's genealogy there will be a mulatto or any other mix that looks like one of the "pure" races. My wife is also very white, I joke that she is an albino but she is not, and both of her parents are white but one of her grandparents was black which makes her mother a mulatto, what my wife is then?
But i like the fact that i am Latin America because i LOVE latin American countries and i feel like i am part of most of the countries since i mestizo. i just wonder if the Spaniards had different rules like the English and went with the one drop rule how our history would be. 100% different
@1coolguysuper im not a Latino but im Hispanic. because my culture is Mexican spanish. i am mixed race but my parents are not different from each other. my mom looks indian my dad looks Mestizo. there the same. im just like the African blacks who have white admixture only ours is greater because we were colonized worse by our ppl
@MrPa1310 It's up to you what you rather be called. I'm really a Latin, but because I'm not from Latin America, people in the U.S. don't see me as a Latino. I'm Hispanic because of my heritage, but like you, I grew in an Anglo country, so we are Anglicized. My dad is olive and my mom fair, but are both Spanish. I believe your European blood may be more that admixture. You could be predominantly Spanish. Look at George Lopez, looks Native, but is 55% European.
@IslenoGutierrez yo no duh im predominatly spanish but george lopez mom looked white. he got his dark skin from his dad. just like my cousins. george lope is native. you look at the Spanish blood and see love??? fuck you that is rape blood my friend deal with it. dam it im half white and i know the truth you cant handle the truth your a secret racist. your ancestors are from Europe. stop pulling our balls.
@MrPa1310 When have I ever denied my ancestors being from Europe? My ancestors are from the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, but via the Canaries, my paternal side originally came from Europe to the Canaries in the 1300's and my maternal side is indigenous from the Canary Islands. I don't have hate in my heart, so of course I see Spanish blood with affinity, because I don't hate myself. I'm not a racist at all, but all the hate you are displaying, you seem to fit that role.
@twoTQt Well here's the thing. Latin Americans are not Spanish, I doubt that you would call Americans "Engish", much less colored Americans. Hispanic originally meant Spanish, but it seems it is forcibly used to describe Latin Americans in the United States as well. It is barely used in Latin America. In the U.S., that would be the equivalent to calling all English speakers "Anglos". Which would include non-English Whites, Blacks, Asians, Arabs, Mexicans, etc. and that's not the case.
@IslenoGutierrez Of course, I was being sarcastic. Now if you want to be acknowledged by the name only of your conquerers by refering to yourself as latin, hispanic or spanish. The children of those conquered only recognizes their "latino" culture, but many of them are mixed. Do you not think that is a slap in the face to your indigenous ancestors? Let that marinate bcs we can dig deeper.
@twoTQt I understand you were being sarcastic. You mentioned the name of my conquerors. I've never been conquered, lol. I was born in the 20th century, not the 15th. Also, I'm not Native American. My family hails from the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, but is off the coast of North Africa.
@twoTQt I had to come back and give you another answer. All these races should not be seen as "Hispanics", as Hispanics traditionally were Spaniards. The U.S. has dubbed Spanish speakers as "Hispanics". They are Hispanophones, I wouldn't go as far as saying Hispanics unless they had Spanish blood. A Criollo (White Latin American), a Mestizo and a Mulatto would be, a Black and a Native American wouldn't be. It's the equivalent to calling Blacks, Asians, Amerindians as Anglo in the U.S...
@1coolguysuper Not exactly my friend. Spain is still overwhelmingly Spanish. So the majority of Spaniards today are indigenous to Spain. Unlike the U.S., where the original population was almost entirely replaced. Native Americans are 2% of the population in the U.S., indigenous Spaniards is Spain make up most of Spain. To say Spaniard blood, I feel fits. I know that Criollos can have other European blood, it's just the majority in Latin America have Spanish blood.
nice video man. liked it. you should make more. especially bringing this hole stereotypical vision of a hispanic thing which is mainly Mestizo or Native American looking. they need to know about the racial mixing. And were not the only true Hispanics. for some reason i dont consider blacks hispanics.
And as for Hispanic,it's just a demonym for someone from Hispania,a ancient Roman province which is today Spain and Portugal.
To let you know,no one in Mexico call themselves "Hispanic", that term is only used to refer to the Spaniards and when Mexico was ruled under Spain as "New Spain",but now we are a sovereign nation with our own ethnicity, no need for a European ethnicity like "Hispanic".
Also, you don't hear people in the U.S. calling themselves "British".
@1coolguysuper Depending on the country, but a wider acceptance of a definition of Mestizo would be someone of Native American/White mixed race. But if someone is a very small percentage of Native American, they could be seen as White if they are mostly White. Same for Black too. Just like in the U.S.. Most people classified as have visible mixed race traits. Hispanic is mainly used in the U.S., which is why I made the video to teach Americans about it.
@IslenoGutierrez "But if someone is a very small percentage of Native American, they could be seen as White if they are mostly White. Same for Black too."
exactly, same thing with Natives,a Native with a small percentage of European blood is still a Native.
@1coolguysuper for the mestizos like my self i am more Spanish because my parents come from west central Mexico were its highly Hispanic influenced. But, we have indigenous roots that are clearly visible. the food my mom and both grandparents cook i thought were Spanish foods. i was dead wrong. and the way we speak act what we wear they way my grand parents spend their lives cooking tortillas my Spanish blood is a scar me and my family have. do to colonialism. fuck dividing ppl!
@RoundTableofUnity Thank you Round. I made this video to visually show Americans that there are White people in the Hispanic group, as well as Blacks, Asians and Arabs. Also to show them that the people they think of as "Hispanic" are Native Americans and mixed race Native American/White called Mestizos. In the U.S., Hispanic/Latino=Mestizo/Native American looking and nothing else. This is so ignorant. Latin America is like the U.S., many races exist.
Under Spanish colonial caste system, people were forced to intermarry for reasons of economic mobility with the goal of becoming Criolle. Spain has become infamous for its brutal and racist treatment against Native Americans. Unfortunately, too many Hispanics have not removed the yoke of Spanish caste system indoctrination and ideology which is still prevalent today in its discriminatory practices of "el Indio"; that INDIO IS IN ALL OF US AND WE ARE ALL THE MORE BEAUTIFUL FOR IT. (1-4)
@vutube379 I don't believe all Mexicans have Native American ancestry. I just don't. There is no study on this that I have seen suggesting so. Even if it was, does a smidgeon of Native American ancestry not make the White no longer? I mean millions of White Americans have me degree of Native Americans ancestry, but are they no longer Whites? I think race is related to what we can see. If you look White you are White, if you look Amerindian, you are Amerindian.
@IslenoGutierrez "If you look White you are White, if you look Amerindian, you are Amerindian." Your logic is oversimplifying the person and is flawed, It isn't the general public's uninformed decision or right to label others particularly to race origins in LA. There is a volume of studies on the DNA of Mexicans already available. You need to understand the history of Mexico to understand who we are genetically and culturally. It isn't a smidgeon for a vast majority: 20% to 66% isn't a (1-1)
@IslenoGutierrez smidgen: it represents our history and cultural roots. You don't seem to understand the entire picture: skin color isn't the sole determinant for one's identification and that has been proven scientifically. It's important that if you are going to tell a story, you tell it with facts in hand; otherwise, it is misleading. There are Mexicans who have no or very little Native American (10% or less), but it is not the majority of people in Mexico or LA. You also forget that (1-2)
@IslenoGutierrez many dye their hair and eyebrows to look Caucasion. Seeing them in the raw might paint a different picture. To label people without knowing the facts is careless and divisive. Hispanic peoples for the most part are a mixed race and it is clearly evident by DNA studies. Check out George Lopez's DNA: over 50% European. Does he look it? He has every right to identify himself as a person of mixed race or White or Native American or Simply Mexican? It's his choice and no one (1-3)
@IslenoGutierrez else's. Mexicans (perfectly fine identifier) as a hybrid race along with all generational Latin Americans cannot because of their colonial history fit neatly into a race box. What I think you should be talking about is the RACISM against those of us who have a more Native American phenotype and the Spanish-caste remnant still operating in a harmful and divisive manner today. Hispanics need to learn their history. (1-4)
@vutube379 Hola hermano, I understand you views and I respect them. But I made this video especially for non-Hispanic Americans and Hispanic Americans born and raised in the U.S.. Those are the people that seem to think Hispanic is a race. In the U.S. Hispanic/Latino = Mestizo. But there are other races besides Mestizo. Like me, I'm White Hispanic, all my ancestors were from Canary Islands, Spain. There are 200 million of us in Latin America. All Hispanics are not mixed race.
@IslenoGutierrez I am aware that there are people of non-Amerindian or African descent in Latin America. However, to say that 200 million people are White in LA can also be misleading considering that anyone who thinks himself White either through phenotype or wealth or having European ancestry can identify as White also. The same is true in the USA, but not for the same reasons as I mentioned earlier: census classification. I am sure that most Hispanics or at least a large percentage (2-1)
@vutube379 Hey, I'm just going by the official numbers in Latin America. 200 million Whites are recorded in Latin America. Now, if it could be more or less, I don't know. You don't know. But one thing I can tell you is, there are a lot of White people in Latin America. And to me, that is gratifying to know, because I am a White Hispanic and I've been trying to explain to Americans that there are many Whites in Latin America. Whites think we all are supposed to look like Mestizos.
@IslenoGutierrez True. Most Whites n America think any1 with an Hispanic surname is a farm laborer even though they work w/White Hispanics & Mestizos of mostly European ancestry everyday & frankly a White phenotype doesn't change their racist opinions: most White Americans are Anglo-Saxons, German, Irish, Italian, etc. Spaniards do not look Northern European if actors r any example of full blooded Spaniards. So to sum things up, if u r not N.E. ancestry, White America can't tell the difference.
@vutube379 You hit the nail on the head my friend. In the U.S., White=Northern European. Even though in Spain there are you types that look like Northerners, there are also the types that look like Southerners. In Britain you have people that look like Spaniards like Sean Connery and Russell Brand also. I guess it's blond hair, fair skin and blue eyes vs. dark hair, tan skin and brown eyes. Same race though, just different sub group. Nordic vs. Mediterranean. But Italians are Meds.
@vutube379 Yeah, but there are Northern phenotype looking Spaniards and their descendents in Latin America, along with Germans, Scottish, Swiss, Irish, Northern French, etc. descendents in countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, etc. Not all Spaniards look Mediterranean, some look Alpine or Nordic too. But most Americans wouldn't even find a Nordic or Alpine type as a "White" person if they are Spanish speaking. It happened to me, I'm a White Hispanic.
@IslenoGutierrez in Mexico do not know the true meaning of the White classification. Several Mestizos being interviewed randomly on the street in Mexico were asked what was their race, they all said Latino. They were then given a choice between White, Asian, Native American, or African and they chose White. What do you make of that? I realize that not all Hispanics are mixed but most share the culture and language. Why is it important for u to separate urself and everyone else in LA by race?
@vutube379 I don't separate Latin America by race. I just comment about it, because it seems I keep running into people (usually Americans) who think Latin America is only brown people (Mestizos). This is why I made this video. In Florida, they seem to be more in tune with the real Latin America, because of the different races of Latinos there. The rest of the country sees Mestizos from Mexico and thinks all Spanish speakers are supposed to be brown people.
@vutube379 R u talking about CarlosDCblog video watch?v=3e6ChgL1EC4&feature=related where he's interviewing Hispanics and asking them what race they're at some fair? If your talking about that then that was not in Mexico but in D.C.
If CarlosDCblog went to Mexico or any Latin American country, the Latin Americans over there wouldn't use the term Hispanic/Latino since it's a U.S. category. You wont hear Bolivian President Evo Morales (who's Indigenous Indian) using that term.
ancestry won a legal victory back in the 50's to identify as White; you would need to understand the very racist policies towards Mexicans during that time to appreciate this victory. Long story short, the White race category we have been checking off on the census for the last 60 years is a result of that victory. However, it is much easier to tell a person one is Hispanic or Latina/o then to rattle off your hybrid combination of genetic material: we all share a common language--Spanish. (1-3)
French, and/or Dutch during the early days of colonialism and the hybrid genotypes and a fixing midrange; for example, the Mestizo (can be mostly European to mostly Native American genetically but most of us fall somewhere in between); the Mulato (can be mostly European or mostly African but most fall somewhere in between); etc. The Mexican (national identity as well as the name of the Mexica people aka the Aztecs from where it names is derived) were people of Spanish and Native American (1-2)
Why are so many people obsessed with the UMBRELLA TERM HISPANIC? HISPANICS KNOW IT ISN'T A RACE BUT A CATEGORIZATION OF RACIALLY MIXED PEOPLES OF SPANISH OR PORTUGUESE DESCENT. HISPANIC OR HISPANOLA REFERS TO THE PEOPLES OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA. After the Spaniards arrival in Mexico and expansion into north, central and south america together with the Portuguese, French, and Dutch in Brazil the hybid races of peoples were born and all share a common ancestor in the Spanish, Portuguese, (1-1)
@IslenoGutierrez Do not make generalizations. I'm Puerto Rican and if you ask me I would say I'm white, my brother is white, my mom is white and my dad is black. Our races are different even when we come from the same ethnic mix I was taught at school that makes up a Puerto Rican.
@1coolguysuper So you mean just like in the U.S where people just go by race? So it would just be....White, Black, Native American, Asian, Arab, Mestizo, Mulatto, Zambo and Pardo. I think that's fine, but in the U.S., most of the Spanish speaking people are Mestizo, so that's why they think Hispanic is a race. They are using the word Hispanic or Latino to describe the Mestizo race. The word Mestizo is pretty much unknown amongst most Americans. In the U.S. Hispanic/Latino=Mestizo.
@IslenoGutierrez Mestizo, Mulatto, Zambo and Pardo are just mix races that fall under the mix category, and "Arab" is not a race, they are classified under White-Caucasian.
I know that in the U.S. Hispanic/Latino=Mestizo,that is why we need to educate people.
I actually have opened some people's eyes, you should too.
Most mexican-americans are ignorant, they don't know, but if you run into one you should educate him/her.
@1coolguysuper man you are absolutely right in every single one of your comments. unfortunately i happen to look exactly in between. tan/brownish skin short body black hair brown eyes lack facial hair. i just identify as Mexican. Mestizo cant be a race but hispanic still means the white race. i get confused easily on this subject. i feel like someone is trying to brain wash me sometimes. im with you though
@MrPa1310 Well, technically Mestizo is a mixed race. It is the socially given name to the Native American/White mixed race. Try to think of Hispanic as culture only. Think of it like a Spanish speaking culture. So if Blacks are part of the Spanish speaking culture, they are Hispanics. It's because you still see Hispanic in the incorrect American way as Mestizo/Native American. But remember, Hispanic is only culture/language, not phenotype. There is no Hispanic look. None.
@MrPa1310 "Mestizo cant be a race but hispanic still means the white race."
The definition of Mestizo is debatable, the REAL definition was 50/50,someone who was born of Caucasian and Native parents, example,Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Porfirio Díaz .(Check this people out)
Most people today give the "Mestizo" title to people who were known as (and still are known today in many countries) as "Cholo" or in Mexico as "Coyote",people who were 1/4 Caucasian or less then 50%.
@1coolguysuper You have any suggestions for a word to fill the void after removing Latino/Hispanic? Something that pertains to all races of Latin America, not just the Native Americans? As far as Portugal, it's known today as Lusitanic, which I see it as a division of Hispanic. I'm not making this stuff up. It's used to describe Portugal and Portuguese influenced countries.
@1coolguysuper "If a mixed race person leans towards a certain race, they could choose to identify as that race." Unfortunately we live in a world where the race with which one identifies with is irrelevant. Since the concept of 'race' (when referring to humans) is a social construct, SOCIETY is the one that ultimately classifies you as being of one race or another, not yourself.
also I was talking about what lookagian77 was saying when he said,"society is the one that ultimately classifies you as being of one race",and I said," Obama is a good example" of society classifying him as black.
And since his outward appearance is mostly black, that is why he is viewed as black.
@1coolguysuper In Latin America, Mulatto is not a derogatory term. As far as Obama, how is he a Black person if his mother is a White woman? The whole country knows this, yet they label him as Black. It's due to the history of the U.S.. Remnants of the one drop rule. In the U.S., partially Black people were seen as full Blacks, but in Latin America, partially Black people are seen as mixed race, which is truly what they are. The U.S. race classification is a joke. He is not Black.
@IslenoGutierrez Mulatto means "mule" I believe, a mule is what you get when you mix a horse and a donkey.
"As far as Obama, how is he a Black person if his mother is a White woman?"
I don't say he was black, I was agreeing with lookagian77 when he said that it's society who classifies you as being of one race and Obama is a good example of that.
But that doesn't change the fact that Obama has a black outward appearance.
@1coolguysuper Obama has a Mulatto outward appearance. You can't compare him to Black Americans, because they themselves are mixed. Compare him to someone from the Congo or Zimbabwe and he looks mixed. As far as the word Mulatto, it comes from Muladi which was the name the Spaniards gave people that were European/Arab mixed race. The Muladis were expelled from Spain with the Moors in 1492, but the name stuck for a mixed race person and evolved to Mulato.
@1coolguysuper The U.S. classifies Obama as Black because that is the history of the U.S. because of the one drop rule of the old days, but the world does not classify him as Black is he has a White mother. He is seen as biracial around the world. He is only seen as Black in the U.S. because they have a warped sense of race.
@1coolguysuper See my previous comments. I didn't give these identities to people, so I have no control over them. But I do have control on how I use them and how I see them. I prefer to use Hispanic to refer to Spaniards, but because Whites, Mestizos, Mulattoes and Pardos share some ancestry from Spain I could see calling them Hispanics as well. It may be BS, but it is how it is used in society. I believe today's usage is highly due to the United States.
@arrowakano Jews are a tricky one. Most Jews look to be Whites, and some look to be Middle Eastern. I believe it is because they have both ancestries. The Jews were in Europe, and are heavily European in ancestry. Some were just converts and strictly European. But even the Middle Eastern Jews are considered White Levantines. They are seen as White in both North America and Latin America.
Also Jamil Mahuad is also of german descent, so if he's seen as middle eastern then so should Shakira and Salma Hajek as their surnames are Middle Eastern.
@LatinoIsntARace My point was to get people to understand that Hispanics are not one race of people. I don't know where you live, but I live in the U.S., and where I live, people think Hispanic is a race and they think to look Hispanic is to look Mestizo. So I made this video to educate those types of people. Mahuad may have some German admixture, but you get my point, there are Middle Easterners in Latin America. Also, who am I stereotyping? I think the video is correct.
@IslenoGutierrez I said you had the Hispanic/latino not being a race part correct. But the Asian and middle eastern part wasn't. You just put pics of East Asians. once again the stereotype thinking that to be Asian you need to look like that.
You know that middle eastern is not a race so why put it as such in the video?
They go through the same thing as us with the * You aren't white white cause you're a middle eastern/Arab or *oh so you're middle eastern i thought you were white.*
@IslenoGutierrez I know what your point was and you had it mostly right. and i know in the United States they give Hispanic and Latino a racial value. We've had these conversions before.
@LatinoIsntARace Salma Hayek is actually Mestiza, but since she has a middle eastern surname, it some how changes her race.
I have know many Mahamuth's and Hayek's.
Also, the whole "hispanic" label are only for Hispania, today Spain and Portugal,he forgot to mention that no one is hispanic unless they are from the Iberian Peninsula.
@1coolguysuper Salma Hayek mother is of Spanish Decsent doesn't mention any native ancestry. Not saying she doesn't.
I'm not the one whos saying that her race is middle eastern. I'm saying that if he puts middle east as it's own race then Salma Hayek and Shakira should be in it also and not just those guys.
If he makes a video about the Portuguese being Hispanic or just Hispania. they wont like it even though Lusitania was part of hispania.
@LatinoIsntARace Salma Hayek's mom is of spanish descent, but her father's full name is Sami Hayek Dominguez.
He was not a Lebanese Criollo. Chances are he was a Mestizo with a Lebanese surname,I know many.
And about Hispania, Hispania is the entire Iberian Peninsula, the Roman province, like it or not,the Portuguese are Hispanics, hell they give Mexicans and other non-hispanic countries that label, why not the ACTUAL place and people where the term originates?
@1coolguysuper The Portuguese for Political/Nationalistico reasons want nothing to do with Spain. So instead they called themselves Lusitanic instead of Hispanic.
@LatinoIsntARace It's called "Hispania Lusitania" and also had some present day Spanish territory.
Let me ask you something,do you consider Mexicans,Central and South Americans as "Hispanics"?
Cause I see a double standard towards non-european spanish speakers while Portugal, who is technically, literally, and geographically Hispanic, are respected as individuals.
@1coolguysuper Portugal was called Hispania Lusitania, but was simplified to Lusitania. Lusitania became it's own province in Roman Iberian peninsula. Today, Lusitanic is the name to describe the ethnicity of the Portuguese, and Brazilians are seen as Lusitanic because of Portuguese influenced culture, bloodline and language. Originally, Hispanics were only Spaniards, but today it encompasses all Spanish speakers. There are many different races in Mexico, Central & South America.
@IslenoGutierrez It's still is Hispania, Portugal is technically, literally, and geographically Hispanic.
Hispania= Iberian Peninsula.
The Iberian Peninsula is present day Spain and Portugal.
If Portugal is respected as a individual, why not Mexico? Why is Mexico hispanic? It's not even near the Iberian Peninsula, Mexico is not even a Hispanic name,it's a Nahuatl name.
Hispanophone is different then Hispanic.
Conan O'brien is hispanophone, but not hispanic, just like Mexico.
@1coolguysuper Mexico is respected. The culture is just influenced by Hispanic culture, that's all. Portugal was part of Hispania, but it's last identity was Lusitania and now today, Portugal is seen as Lusitanic culture and all countries that share Portuguese culture and language is Lusitanic. I didn't make this up, it's just how it is. Hispanophone just means Spanish speaker, but today Hispanic is used the same. If Conan O'Brien was raised in a Hispanic culture he'd be Hispanic.
@IslenoGutierrez "Mexico is respected. The culture is just influenced by Hispanic culture, that's all."
Spain is also influence by Arab and Gypsie culture, but they are not label as "Arabs" or Indians, but Mexico is label as "Hispanic" even though the Mexican government rejects it.
"Hispanophone just means Spanish speaker, but today Hispanic is used the same"
Conan O'Brien speaks Spanish.
You should do videos to debunk this "Hispanic" label the U.S. created.
You're doing the same thing people do to us and that's stereotyping us as being a single race.
Whats the point of India and Pakistan, etc still being put in the Asian category. when most people see India as being it's own continent and Pakistan as being Middle Eastern.
I mean all of Russia might as well be made officially part of europe. I mean it can be done as the boarder lines are made up, as Europe and Asia ( including the middle east) are the same Continent.
@IslenoGutierrez - This got to be the best Hispanic/Latino video I have ever seen on YT. You broke it down so well. This video would be good to use for a school project. Good job IslenoGutierrez.
@DaBigSun Thank you Sun. I just got tired of explaining to people that Hispanic/Latino was not a race. Although there are many on here that know it's not, many more do, and it's usually Americans. So I took the time to make a detailed video on this subject. I'm glad you like it. It should be effective to get the word out that you can be Hispanic/Latino and be of any race, that there is no one Hispanic look. But thanks to Hollywood, people think you need to look like a Mestizo. Gracias.
This video is stupid simply because you didn't put that many examples of the Mestizo race. Seeing as they vary from phenotype.
zamoramexrevenge 4 days ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@zamoramexrevenge This video is not stupid. It's very informative to Americans who think "Hispanic" is a race. Now on the topic of mestizos, true they vary in phenotype, but the examples I gave were some of the most common types. The idea of the video is to show Americans some familiar celebrities that are famous for them to relate to. I had to start to limit the examples, because I didn't want to make the video too long. Notice the examples get smaller toward the end.

@IslenoGutierrez Most aren't tri-racial? Are you basing that on the 80% of Puerto Ricans that list themselves as white?
DevilMayhem666 4 weeks ago
@DevilMayhem666 No, I'm basing it on a genetic study of Puerto Rico. But again, race in society today is based on one's phenotype. Because you don't know what you have in your blood from centuries back. Just like in the U.S., white Americans are clearly defined as white Americans, but most have some admixture from Native Americans or blacks, but in the U.S., they are still clearly defined as whites.
IslenoGutierrez 4 weeks ago
@TheViper831 80% of us are not like that. Most Spaniards are nice people. Generous people that would give you the shirt off their backs. As far as speaking the dialect correctly, not even all of Spain speaks it correctly. Every region has it's dialect, just like in Latin America. What happened hundreds of years ago we can't take back, those were stupid idiots that has put a scar on our nationality. But all we can do is be humble like the many Spaniards that came after the conquista.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 Self entitlement? Wtf? We are living in the 21st century, everyone is equal here. No one feels self entitled here, especially me and all the rest of the Spaniards that I know.

@TheViper831 What exactly is it that you think he feels 'self-entitled' to?
lookagain77 1 month ago

IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 See my previous comment. When lookagain77 was talking about race as being phenotype, he was meaning the racial sub group terms that are used more frequently to describe race. White, black, Native American, East Asian, East Indian, Arabs, etc. That's what he meant, I'm sure. It's not like people go around using the 3 main races as racial identifiers like seeing an East Indian and saying "oh, there is a Caucasian man" and sees an Arab and says, "oh there's a Caucasian".
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago

IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 You are just against the whole topic of race, but race is real. You can listen to all these liberals with "race is only a social construct" crap, but that's bullshit. Race is both scientific and social. Scientifically, Caucasoids, Negroids, and Mongoids differ from each other substantially. Now the sub races among them differ from each other. You say Negroids are the most diverse, but did you see the Caucasoid group? Don't even look alike. Most Negroes do.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez Most people that claim Race to be a "social construct" do so because they've heard that the Scientific community has claimed so. While that is TRUE, most people using the "social construct" line do not use it PROPERLY, and thus, when most people hear it they MISTAKENLY equate it with the person claiming that Races "do not exist". What the Scientific community was referring to is THE PROCESS of classifying someone to a 'Race' as being a 'social construct'.
lookagain77 1 month ago
@lookagain77 I agree. It's that it is said that race is a social construct, but the only meaning they are talking about when they mention this, is that people are admitted into "in group memberships" some which are based on privilege, some the opposite. Some people take it to mean race is not biological, but truth is, race is phenotype and bone structure. Whites look different from blacks because of variation in phenotype, which is what race describes.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez "Race" in general, WITHOUT specific categories, is just an UNDEFINED cluster of common Phenotypes. But, in order for that to be useful for any practical purposes we have to DEFINE those clusters in some meaningful way (to us). This process of defining, of ultimately coming up with the names and boundaries of a defined 'Race', is entirely a social process, and although the process is BASED on objective observation ("REAL" stuff), it is NOT a 'scientific' process.
lookagain77 1 month ago
@lookagain77 Race is still real. Phenotypes are real. We are not all the same. Your race is your phenotype. But not only phenotype, bone structure, even blood types are common among certain groups.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez Of course Race is real, who says it isn't?
lookagain77 1 month ago
@lookagain77 I thought you were starting to go the "race is not real" route. If you were not, then don't worry about it. Race does have a scientific relation when speaking of Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid, when referring to cranial and bone structures, even blood types and haplogroups. But White and Black are social names given to subgroups of European Caucasoids and Sub-Saharan African Negroids. But the way I see race is, that it's just the variations in the Human race.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 No contradiction. All these "races" which are actually sub races, belong to one of three main races, but some of the mixed races belong to 2 or all 3 racial groups. The Whites and Middle Easterners in this video are sub races of the Caucasian race. The East Asians are Mongoloids and the Blacks are Negroids, the Mestizo belongs to both Caucasian and Mongoloid. Mulatto belongs to Caucasian and Negroid, Zambo to Mongoloid and Negroid and Pardo to all three.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 No need to do homework. Indians of India are classified as Caucasians. Caucasian does not mean just Europeans. Actually Europeans, Arabs, Jews, North Africans, Persians, Indians and people like Afghans and Pakistanis. Only three races in the world...Caucasoid, Negroid and Mongoloid. We all fall under one of the groups. Since you are Mestizo, you are half Caucasoid, half Mongoloid. I'm Caucasoid.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@TheViper831 of course there is, that's the characteristics pertaining to race. Also, Jews are part of the Mediterranean subgroup belonging to the Caucasian race.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago

Does that makes him/her a Cuban-Puerto Rican?
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls A person born in Puerto Rico from Cuban parents are Cuban-Puerto Rican. Perfect example is Carlos Ponce. His parents are Cuban by nationality, but he was born in Puerto Rico after they fled Cuba from Castro. He is racially White, because his ancestors were from Europe, but he is Latin American because he was born in Latin America. As far as a Puerto Rican, any race can be one. You can't be white race if your dad is black race. You would be mulatto.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez Then it is very hard to tell a person's race without looking to all of his/her ancestors. If you see me in person without knowing that my dad is black, you would think I'm white. My skin is very light and my hair is dark brown, I don't have any of the features of a black person and I'm not adopted (that I know of, haha, joking). I was going to ask you, what do you think makes a Puerto Rican but thats another subject since nationality is not the same as race. (continued)
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls I don't understand how if your dad is black, you don't have any African features. But let's just say you look completely White, your dad is black so you are not white, but mulatto. Yes, most races are not pure, but many are fairly homogenous. Race in society is pretty much viewed by phenotype. If society sees you as white, which no known ancestor is non-white, then you are white. If you have some known non-white ancestry, then you will be viewed as having admixture.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez You sound like you don't believe that I'm white, I can send you a picture but then that won't prove anything as I can send you any picture. But I have nothing to gain by lying, my looks are from my mother's side of my family where everyone is white, my dad's side all my uncles and aunts are black. It is very common in Puerto Rico, even I have cousins on my dad's side of my family that look "pure" white when only one of the parents is white (continue)
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls If you are half black, you are not a person of the White race. Your skin may be light and you may not look very African, but if your dad is black, you are mulatto. That's just the truth.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez you're missing my point, I know I'm a mulatto and I'm proud of it as I'm proud of my black heritage more than the white one. My point is that you can't tell a person's race just by looking at them, therefore this video is a shallow way to categorize people as belonging to a specific race.
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls "you can't tell a person's race just by looking at them" Race is purely based on Phenotypes not Genotypes. The whole point behind 'race' categories is that they're based simply on looks, this is the official definition of the word 'race' (when used for humans). Perhaps what you meant to say was the following: "you can't tell a person's GENETIC ANCESTRY just by looking at them" That would make a lot more sense. Genetic Ancestry =/= Race. They're two different things.
lookagain77 1 month ago
@lookagain77 This is true. People automatically assign you to a race due to what your phenotype looks like, not genotype, as most don't know your genotype. We go by phenotype, unless your admixture is known. For instance, if I seen a picture of iFupTrolls and he looked completely White European, then I'd automatically assign him to the white race, but now that I know his dad is black, even when he looked white, I'd assign him to the mulatto race.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@lookagain77 I understand your point. I'm just using the logic of the person who posted the video. Following his logic a person can be white, with dark brown hair (like me) but because my dad is black I can't be considered white. I'm just picking his brain, I don't agree with his point of view but I can respect an opinion.
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls why are you more proud of your black side than your white side? wtf?
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez Mainly because of history. The Puerto Rican race is a mix of Spanish, Africans and Tainos. Spanish people were the ones who got to Puerto Rico and made the Tainos slaves. When the Tainos started dying because of slavery then they brought the Africans to do the same job. I'm not saying they started slavery but they clearly supported it.
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls Not all Puerto Ricans are triracial. Actually, some are white, some are black, some are mulatto, some are mestizo and some are pardo (triracial). Actually most are not triracial.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls See my previous comment. You can't put all Spaniards in a box. Of course there were the soldiers that came in the beginning, but there were also later Spaniards that came to Puerto Rico with families. I'm Canarian Spanish, and Spaniards from the Canary Islands of Spain came in the 18th and 19th centuries to Puerto Rico in large numbers and inhabited the towns of Hatillo, Lares, Arecibo and Camuy. Not all Spaniards to Puerto Rico was conquistadors.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez I get your point and is a valid one. It just makes me mad when people celebrate the day Christopher Columbus arrived to Puerto Rico, like it was a good thing but you're right. I can't blame all Spaniards for what a group of twisted individuals did.
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@iFupTrolls I'm glad you got my point. All these Latinos think we all were in the Americas killing and enslaving people when it was mainly a group of sick twisted individuals. Most Spaniards came after the conquest as farmers, fishermen and merchants. Many came with families. But Latinos are not being taught this, only about the conquistadors, which to me, were like trying to stop the twisted U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba or ones doing bad things in Iraq.

Also Ricky Martin's dad is not white, if something, he is a mix as his skin color is dark, not black but what we call "trigueño"
iFupTrolls 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez (continuation) Back to races, I would go as far as to hypothesize that today, there are only a few, if none, pure races as it is very probable that somewhere in a person's genealogy there will be a mulatto or any other mix that looks like one of the "pure" races. My wife is also very white, I joke that she is an albino but she is not, and both of her parents are white but one of her grandparents was black which makes her mother a mulatto, what my wife is then?

Let that marinate bcs we can dig deeper.
twoTQt 1 month ago
@twoTQt I understand you were being sarcastic. You mentioned the name of my conquerors. I've never been conquered, lol. I was born in the 20th century, not the 15th. Also, I'm not Native American. My family hails from the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain, but is off the coast of North Africa.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@twoTQt I had to come back and give you another answer. All these races should not be seen as "Hispanics", as Hispanics traditionally were Spaniards. The U.S. has dubbed Spanish speakers as "Hispanics". They are Hispanophones, I wouldn't go as far as saying Hispanics unless they had Spanish blood. A Criollo (White Latin American), a Mestizo and a Mulatto would be, a Black and a Native American wouldn't be. It's the equivalent to calling Blacks, Asians, Amerindians as Anglo in the U.S...
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez Anyone could be a Spaniard, all you need to do is be from Spain.
To say,"I wouldn't go as far as saying Hispanics unless they had Spanish blood" is like saying in order to "American" you have to have Native blood.
Also, not all Criollos, mestizos, and Mulattos have Spanish blood, there are other European ancestries,French,German,Italian etc.
1coolguysuper 1 month ago
@1coolguysuper Not exactly my friend. Spain is still overwhelmingly Spanish. So the majority of Spaniards today are indigenous to Spain. Unlike the U.S., where the original population was almost entirely replaced. Native Americans are 2% of the population in the U.S., indigenous Spaniards is Spain make up most of Spain. To say Spaniard blood, I feel fits. I know that Criollos can have other European blood, it's just the majority in Latin America have Spanish blood.

@IslenoGutierrez "Not exactly my friend. Spain is still overwhelmingly Spanish."
Spain is made up of many different European tribes.

There is no indigenous Spaniard, not even the Spanish language is indigenous to Spain.
"Spaniards is Spain make up most of Spain."
There many kinds of Spaniards,Celts,Germanic,Nordic and Arabs too.
"To say Spaniard blood, I feel fits"
There is no"Spaniard blood".

nice video man. liked it. you should make more. especially bringing this hole stereotypical vision of a hispanic thing which is mainly Mestizo or Native American looking. they need to know about the racial mixing. And were not the only true Hispanics. for some reason i dont consider blacks hispanics.
MrPa1310 1 month ago
@MrPa1310 Part 2
1coolguysuper 1 month ago
@1coolguysuper Depending on the country, but a wider acceptance of a definition of Mestizo would be someone of Native American/White mixed race. But if someone is a very small percentage of Native American, they could be seen as White if they are mostly White. Same for Black too. Just like in the U.S.. Most people classified as have visible mixed race traits. Hispanic is mainly used in the U.S., which is why I made the video to teach Americans about it.

We are NOT talking about culture,we are talking about race.
Race has nothing to do with culture.
mexico has more indigenous traditions then European, but most people believe the other way since Mexicans speak spanish.
Don't get me wrong,we do have some European influences, but we just blend it with our Native roots.

IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez "If you look White you are White, if you look Amerindian, you are Amerindian." Your logic is oversimplifying the person and is flawed, It isn't the general public's uninformed decision or right to label others particularly to race origins in LA. There is a volume of studies on the DNA of Mexicans already available. You need to understand the history of Mexico to understand who we are genetically and culturally. It isn't a smidgeon for a vast majority: 20% to 66% isn't a (1-1)
vutube379 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez smidgen: it represents our history and cultural roots. You don't seem to understand the entire picture: skin color isn't the sole determinant for one's identification and that has been proven scientifically. It's important that if you are going to tell a story, you tell it with facts in hand; otherwise, it is misleading. There are Mexicans who have no or very little Native American (10% or less), but it is not the majority of people in Mexico or LA. You also forget that (1-2)
vutube379 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez many dye their hair and eyebrows to look Caucasion. Seeing them in the raw might paint a different picture. To label people without knowing the facts is careless and divisive. Hispanic peoples for the most part are a mixed race and it is clearly evident by DNA studies. Check out George Lopez's DNA: over 50% European. Does he look it? He has every right to identify himself as a person of mixed race or White or Native American or Simply Mexican? It's his choice and no one (1-3)
vutube379 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez else's. Mexicans (perfectly fine identifier) as a hybrid race along with all generational Latin Americans cannot because of their colonial history fit neatly into a race box. What I think you should be talking about is the RACISM against those of us who have a more Native American phenotype and the Spanish-caste remnant still operating in a harmful and divisive manner today. Hispanics need to learn their history. (1-4)
vutube379 2 months ago
@vutube379 Hola hermano, I understand you views and I respect them. But I made this video especially for non-Hispanic Americans and Hispanic Americans born and raised in the U.S.. Those are the people that seem to think Hispanic is a race. In the U.S. Hispanic/Latino = Mestizo. But there are other races besides Mestizo. Like me, I'm White Hispanic, all my ancestors were from Canary Islands, Spain. There are 200 million of us in Latin America. All Hispanics are not mixed race.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez I am aware that there are people of non-Amerindian or African descent in Latin America. However, to say that 200 million people are White in LA can also be misleading considering that anyone who thinks himself White either through phenotype or wealth or having European ancestry can identify as White also. The same is true in the USA, but not for the same reasons as I mentioned earlier: census classification. I am sure that most Hispanics or at least a large percentage (2-1)
vutube379 2 months ago
@vutube379 Hey, I'm just going by the official numbers in Latin America. 200 million Whites are recorded in Latin America. Now, if it could be more or less, I don't know. You don't know. But one thing I can tell you is, there are a lot of White people in Latin America. And to me, that is gratifying to know, because I am a White Hispanic and I've been trying to explain to Americans that there are many Whites in Latin America. Whites think we all are supposed to look like Mestizos.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez True. Most Whites n America think any1 with an Hispanic surname is a farm laborer even though they work w/White Hispanics & Mestizos of mostly European ancestry everyday & frankly a White phenotype doesn't change their racist opinions: most White Americans are Anglo-Saxons, German, Irish, Italian, etc. Spaniards do not look Northern European if actors r any example of full blooded Spaniards. So to sum things up, if u r not N.E. ancestry, White America can't tell the difference.
vutube379 2 months ago
@vutube379 You hit the nail on the head my friend. In the U.S., White=Northern European. Even though in Spain there are you types that look like Northerners, there are also the types that look like Southerners. In Britain you have people that look like Spaniards like Sean Connery and Russell Brand also. I guess it's blond hair, fair skin and blue eyes vs. dark hair, tan skin and brown eyes. Same race though, just different sub group. Nordic vs. Mediterranean. But Italians are Meds.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@vutube379 Yeah, but there are Northern phenotype looking Spaniards and their descendents in Latin America, along with Germans, Scottish, Swiss, Irish, Northern French, etc. descendents in countries like Cuba, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, etc. Not all Spaniards look Mediterranean, some look Alpine or Nordic too. But most Americans wouldn't even find a Nordic or Alpine type as a "White" person if they are Spanish speaking. It happened to me, I'm a White Hispanic.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@IslenoGutierrez in Mexico do not know the true meaning of the White classification. Several Mestizos being interviewed randomly on the street in Mexico were asked what was their race, they all said Latino. They were then given a choice between White, Asian, Native American, or African and they chose White. What do you make of that? I realize that not all Hispanics are mixed but most share the culture and language. Why is it important for u to separate urself and everyone else in LA by race?
vutube379 2 months ago
@vutube379 I don't separate Latin America by race. I just comment about it, because it seems I keep running into people (usually Americans) who think Latin America is only brown people (Mestizos). This is why I made this video. In Florida, they seem to be more in tune with the real Latin America, because of the different races of Latinos there. The rest of the country sees Mestizos from Mexico and thinks all Spanish speakers are supposed to be brown people.

If CarlosDCblog went to Mexico or any Latin American country, the Latin Americans over there wouldn't use the term Hispanic/Latino since it's a U.S. category. You wont hear Bolivian President Evo Morales (who's Indigenous Indian) using that term.
DaBigSun 1 month ago 2
ancestry won a legal victory back in the 50's to identify as White; you would need to understand the very racist policies towards Mexicans during that time to appreciate this victory.

Self-identification is the best way,but sadly must mixed race people believe "Hispanic" or "Latino" are races.
We seriously need to stop this false identity.
1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper So you mean just like in the U.S where people just go by race? So it would just be....White, Black, Native American, Asian, Arab, Mestizo, Mulatto, Zambo and Pardo. I think that's fine, but in the U.S., most of the Spanish speaking people are Mestizo, so that's why they think Hispanic is a race. They are using the word Hispanic or Latino to describe the Mestizo race. The word Mestizo is pretty much unknown amongst most Americans. In the U.S. Hispanic/Latino=Mestizo.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago

MrPa1310 1 month ago
@MrPa1310 Well, technically Mestizo is a mixed race. It is the socially given name to the Native American/White mixed race. Try to think of Hispanic as culture only. Think of it like a Spanish speaking culture. So if Blacks are part of the Spanish speaking culture, they are Hispanics. It's because you still see Hispanic in the incorrect American way as Mestizo/Native American. But remember, Hispanic is only culture/language, not phenotype. There is no Hispanic look. None.
IslenoGutierrez 1 month ago
@MrPa1310 "Mestizo cant be a race but hispanic still means the white race."
The definition of Mestizo is debatable, the REAL definition was 50/50,someone who was born of Caucasian and Native parents, example,Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Porfirio Díaz .(Check this people out)
Most people today give the "Mestizo" title to people who were known as (and still are known today in many countries) as "Cholo" or in Mexico as "Coyote",people who were 1/4 Caucasian or less then 50%.

I don't endorse the Mexica Movement, but I do believe in their teachings to stop using that term, along with Latino.

1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper You have any suggestions for a word to fill the void after removing Latino/Hispanic? Something that pertains to all races of Latin America, not just the Native Americans? As far as Portugal, it's known today as Lusitanic, which I see it as a division of Hispanic. I'm not making this stuff up. It's used to describe Portugal and Portuguese influenced countries.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez "You have any suggestions for a word to fill the void after removing Latino/Hispanic?"
How about just calling them by their race, caucasian, black, asian,Native American, or mixed.
If a mixed race person leans towards a certain race, they could choose to identify as that race.
For example George Lopez, who is supposedly 55% European but appearance-wise,he obviously leans towards the Native side.
continue.
1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper "If a mixed race person leans towards a certain race, they could choose to identify as that race." Unfortunately we live in a world where the race with which one identifies with is irrelevant. Since the concept of 'race' (when referring to humans) is a social construct, SOCIETY is the one that ultimately classifies you as being of one race or another, not yourself.

And since his outward appearance is mostly black, that is why he is viewed as black.
1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper In Latin America, Mulatto is not a derogatory term. As far as Obama, how is he a Black person if his mother is a White woman? The whole country knows this, yet they label him as Black. It's due to the history of the U.S.. Remnants of the one drop rule. In the U.S., partially Black people were seen as full Blacks, but in Latin America, partially Black people are seen as mixed race, which is truly what they are. The U.S. race classification is a joke. He is not Black.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez Mulatto means "mule" I believe, a mule is what you get when you mix a horse and a donkey.
"As far as Obama, how is he a Black person if his mother is a White woman?"
I don't say he was black, I was agreeing with lookagian77 when he said that it's society who classifies you as being of one race and Obama is a good example of that.
But that doesn't change the fact that Obama has a black outward appearance.
1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper Obama has a Mulatto outward appearance. You can't compare him to Black Americans, because they themselves are mixed. Compare him to someone from the Congo or Zimbabwe and he looks mixed. As far as the word Mulatto, it comes from Muladi which was the name the Spaniards gave people that were European/Arab mixed race. The Muladis were expelled from Spain with the Moors in 1492, but the name stuck for a mixed race person and evolved to Mulato.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez "Obama has a Mulatto outward appearance.'
So does Chris Brown,Will Smith etc but they are still seen as black.
"You can't compare him to Black Americans, because they themselves are mixed"
So are the vast majority of "whites" in the U.S. but they are still seen as white-caucasian.
i see Obama as a mixed race person, but what I was saying is that SOCIETY classifies one being of one race.
Race is mostly determine by SOCIETY by phenotypes (outward appearance).

@arrowakano Jews are a tricky one. Most Jews look to be Whites, and some look to be Middle Eastern. I believe it is because they have both ancestries. They are seen as White in both North America and Latin America.

@LatinoIsntARace My point was to get people to understand that Hispanics are not one race of people. So I made this video to educate those types of people. Mahuad may have some German admixture, but you get my point, there are Middle Easterners in Latin America. Also, who am I stereotyping? @1coolguysuper The Portuguese for Political/Nationalistico reasons want nothing to do with Spain. So instead they called themselves Lusitanic instead of Hispanic.
LatinoIsntARace 2 months ago
@LatinoIsntARace It's called "Hispania Lusitania" and also had some present day Spanish territory.
Let me ask you something,do you consider Mexicans,Central and South Americans as "Hispanics"?
Cause I see a double standard towards non-european spanish speakers while Portugal, who is technically, literally, and geographically Hispanic, are respected as individuals.
So are Brazilians "Lusitanics"?
1coolguysuper 2 months ago
@1coolguysuper Portugal was called Hispania Lusitania, but was simplified to Lusitania. Lusitania became it's own province in Roman Iberian peninsula. Today, Lusitanic is the name to describe the ethnicity of the Portuguese, and Brazilians are seen as Lusitanic because of Portuguese influenced culture, bloodline and language. Originally, Hispanics were only Spaniards, but today it encompasses all Spanish speakers. There are many different races in Mexico, Central & South America.
IslenoGutierrez 2 months ago
@IslenoGutierrez It's still is Hispania, Portugal is technically, literally, and geographically Hispanic.
Hispania= Iberian Peninsula.
1coolguysuper 2 months ago

Gracias.
