Pleasant music but rather unusual arrangement. Very pretty lady but rather too focussed on her 'swaying'. Compare this rather melodramatic cabaret-style performance with Jay Unger (the composer of the tune - not 'song' as stated) and Molly Mason's absolute simplicity of presentation and extremely beautiful understated playingof this piece and you will see the contrast between complete glitzy showmanship and real musicianship.
@Mulben48 It's all a matter of personal taste. You prefer Jay and Molly, I prefer this, and that doesn't make either of us "right". With all the variety of taste, there is no need to insult genres of music that are not your favorite.

@warioman91 I see. You are not really interested, you just want to troll music videos, insult every genre, then get emails. Last one you will get from me.
Very sad that so many people have no lives and use spare time to maintain their ignorance. Your computer can teach you everything you want to know.
@warioman91, Nope, I am not at all annoyed by any of Mairead's delicate movements while playing. They are certainly modest here compared with what she does live on-stage in some of her other songs. The way she moves while playing is part of her charm. In fact, with her movements, she is more part of the song than many other more "wooden" professional violinists who just stand there rigidly.
@warioman91 Well when a musician is FEELING the spirit of the music swaying, tapping the foot, bobbing the head or whatever comes naturally. Just consider her gentle movements as a dance and enjoy.
I hate the piano, i jump everytime thinking that my computer battery is about to die out, but then, i see its half full and its that friggen piano playing -.-
You do know that Celtic Ladies and Celtic Woman are two different groups right? I have one CD from each. Celtic Ladies I think does slightly more religious stuff like Ave Maria.
A little slower than I'm used to, and the instrumentation was odd for someone who's listened to Jay Ungar's version so much, but I only have one other thing to say:
THIS SONG, NO MATTER THE INSTRUMENTATION OR ARRANGEMENT, WILL NEVER FAIL TO MOVE ME.
Like most people in the US the first time I heard this piece was when watching Ken Burn's Civile War on PBS. I was later surprised to find it had actually been composed in the 1980s. The only piece of music used that was not period to the show. It still pulls on my the Irish side of my family tree.
@claycommons Its simply amazing and beautiful and shes not been taught to act as a show off shes allowing the music to flow through her and show everyone her passion for it
i love this piece... it can be bent in any which way you like.... you can add grace notes here there and everywhere.... hang on a note for a little longer than needed... *sigh*
@RyuraXKomura She has a very good classical training but also a grounding in Irish Traditional. Her grip on the bow seems more out of the traditional. Most Cape Breton players are similar. As to a mute. I think that may be a pick up.. She is a much better player than I used to think.
@sgtcrab1...Yes exactly right...She has years of classical training, but can play classical and traditional with equal ease. Her instructors used to tell her she has to choose, that she couldn't play both styles, but she has proven them wrong again and again. She does hold the bow above the frog (gives her better control). Her violin is a 300 year old 9/8 size, and was given to her by a dear friend. And yes there is a mic attached to the violin, the transmitter is at the back of her dress.
Mairead Nesbit is one of if not the greatest violinist I have ever heard and I've heard some great ones including many really good Bluegrass musicians including my son in law who plarys with Denver based HIgh Plains Tradition, and Fort Collins based Bluegrass Patriots and the great Mark O'Connor.. Bobbie, my SIL can kick but on a fiddle, but Mairead is fantastic, and beautiful to boot.

lovely group...but she got some of the notes wrong at :24 to :26 seconds.
i've heard this song played hundreds of times throughout my life, from hundreds of sources enough to know it note for note. though i rely on jay ungar's rendition in the ken burns civil war documentary(thank you jay). even though i can't play it on anything...yet. but she did get some of the notes wrong at the aforementioned time...and again at 1:47- 1:48...
The music just flows right through her, it's as if she can reach out touch the very soul. I never cease to be amazed at this talent. Mairead is a part of the very music she plays, and the rest of Celtic Woman have such fantastic talent i can only say I am overjoyed to have lived to see and listen to this.
@2009Bolero....No she is not "miming"...She plays every note to every piece of music she plays.....She is a world class violinist and has the awards to prove it. She has taken years to perfect her style of playing, she can play "classical" and "traditional" with equal ease and grace... Anyone who has seen her live can tell you she is actually playing... Don't let a well know problem with You Tube fool you...
@2009Bolero I was getting the same feeling....I have been watching a lot of her vids with the Celtic Women, and the sound and her playing technique don't seem to coincide, but I can't think why they would have her fake it...?
@maiamwolf There are probably as many as a dozen cameras recording her at one time. Often when they edit the video together they use the "best" shot of her, and that shot doesn't always match the music she is playing. She plays her concerts live, lip-syncing a violin with a live audience presents too many unnecessary problems.
@maiamwolf I'm not qualified to comment on technique or what finger should be moving at a particular note... But I have noticed in many videos on this site, not just Celtic Woman, that the video and audio are out of sync. I think it is because of this that many believe CW lip syncs in their videos. Got no idea or opinion on that. But two weeks ago I saw them live and was sitting close enough to hear them sing- not from speakers but them on stage- They don't lip sync...
I need to look at the version on the Celtic woman DVD. I think it might have come from there. I'm pretty sure this is at the Helix center. WOW talk about a close up of her violin. Someone must have used a very powerful telephoto lens to get that close to a violin being played.
@drmayeda1....Yes this is at he Helix Centre in Dublin...this performance was recorded live for the DVD, several cameras were used including some "portable" ones so the cameraman could get close to the stage.. T
The person that just commented is an admitted troll, she insults Mairead Nesbitt often. There's a great internet rule that kills people like @kaaren56, "Dont feed the trolls".

The fusion of celtic music and pole dancing - proof that we humans are capable of infinite creativity. This woman is quite a good player, but I still think there other trad musicians around, eg. Aly Bain, Doc and the Lady, even Jay Ungar himself (the composer of the tune) who have far more impressive technique, and a more moving rendition of this particular tune.
I've never read the New York Times, I came up with the pole dancer comment on my own, in the spirit of wry sarcasm. Does that count as humour? With love from a well-fed troll.
@kaaren56 Maybe someday you, or one of your dozen other names, will understand what this song and this caliber of talent means to people, and to music in general. But, being a troll, I suppose you just enjoy trying to pull down someone with more integrity than yourself ... that just wont work with Mairead Nesbitt.
Don't bother feeding the trolls. The pole dancer comment was recycled from a New York Times review in 2006 ... originally meant to be humorous. Research will tell you how ridiculous the comment is.
The Doc and Lady version was nice but I needed a more direct rendition. I considered all the critical comments written here but really couldn't hear them over the imagined sound of meowing. That's OK because I really couldn't sit here and read; I had dinner to make, and this played nicely as I did so (unable to see whether the performer in question was dressed or not, let alone how. And I heard a nice enough touch, plainly put and nicely played. And that indeed seems like it should be sufficient
@Jobotubular Finally, some intelligent comment!! I'm interested to know what you mean by "direct". Also, which of the two versions do you consider "plainly put and nicely played"? I am looking at different renditions as I try to render the tune myself. Can't find the Aly Bain rendition mentioned below. I'm disappointed my comments came across as catty, I was trying for refined sarcasm, to make my point.

You guys are right, this woman doesn't pout and writhe quite as much as a pole dancer. And it's true that her clothes cover her, just like clingfilm covers stuff. Seriously, when I close my eyes and listen to this video, I hear an average, in fact rather boring rendition of Ashokan Farewell. No ornamentation, no variation. Now, before we start the next barrage of personal insults, how about we all close our eyes and listen to Doc and the Lady playing the same tune. Go on, I dare ya.
@kaaren56 Pole dancing qualification? That made me laugh. You're nothing but a music snob. When you can play and express yourself as freely as Mairead, I'll retract that comment. Oh and get your eyes tested: those clothes cover all but her shoulders.
I am sure this woman's resume is no more or less impressive than the average performing musician. I'd say her audiences are bigger, not because she is a superior musician, but because she is young, has a sexy body, wears revealing clothes, and possibly has a qualification in pole dancing. Nigel Kennedy did the same with his punky haircut and showy conflict with the classical music establishment.
In response to Cheryl1166, I have as many clues as anyone else in these posts. I was stating my personal opinion, which is what these posts are for. How about, instead of sniping at me, you try backing up your opinion with some calmly reasoned comment? Then the readers can judge for themselves how many clues YOU'VE got.
@kaaren56 Pole dancing? MY, she really IS accomplished, isn't she? Why don't you base your opinion of this "average performing musician" on her musical background, education, accomplishments, and ability, which have gained her many honors and priviledges in the musical world, instead of sniping at her for her dress or her looks or her body. Sounds to me like you are jealous. That's just my calmly reasoned personal opinion, of course. Which is what these posts are for.
Out of respect for the composer and the origins of this piece, it would be damn nice if the title was spelled properly - it's "Ashokan Farewell", not "The Ashoken Farewell"!! I have seen more skilled and genuinely expressive renditions by other fiddlers; this whole performance- the revealing clothes, the pouting and writhing - I find rather pretentious and affected. Moving with the music is one thing; shaking your booty quite another.
I still believe in them though, from my perspective a soul mate doesn't have to be a lover. They can be a brother or a sister or a twin or a best friend or even a parent. Just somebody who understands you so completely it's like your souls just sort of fit together. I think it's possible to love someone completely and irrevocably and have them return those feelings, but still have a best friend as a soul mate. Y'know?
@ShayDeLuca Oh, I agree that a soul mate doesn't have to be a lover... but so far, my only real experience is WITH a lover, and that went to heck :P But in any case, the best other soul mates I have are my two best friends whose personalities just kind of meld with mine and vice versa XD In any case, thanks for helping me to cheer up♥
I've been playing violin for ten and a half years now (Since I was 4). When I heard this song, I knew that it was going to be the most beautiful song I would ever hear in my life. She played it with most soul, most love... everything. And swaying with the music is better than standing there and being stiff. My teacher always said "Use your shock absorbers!" Whenever I played La Folia. :)
I don't really like the sound of her violin. I've heard a lot of her playing and It always sounds like it is muted. Actually I just assumed that it WAS muted. She plays pretty well though. I just wish the tones were more vibrant.
@airopp81, that Doc and the Lady version is nice, but it is *different* an not necessarily better or worse. Mairead's playing here is first rate, and she does a wonderful job with this piece.
you've got to love the way she makes playing the violin seem so easy. her fast paced solos have to be my favorite because, whether you listen to them or you watch her flying around the stage, they get your heart racing. she's incredibly talented and i love how she feels the music she plays, along with her enjoyment so clear on her face.
i remember when i had to play this song for orchestra and i HATED it! but hearing it now, i really wish i'd actually taken the time to learn it. It's a very beautiful piece.
Pleasant music but rather unusual arrangement. Very pretty lady but rather too focussed on her 'swaying'. @warioman91 I see. You are not really interested, you just want to troll music videos, insult every genre, then get emails. Last one you will get from me.
Very sad that so many people have no lives and use spare time to maintain their ignorance. Your computer can teach you everything you want to know.
TripBoomLikeThat 7 months ago
@warioman91, Nope, I am not at all annoyed by any of Mairead's delicate movements while playing. They are certainly modest here compared with what she does live on-stage in some of her other songs. The way she moves while playing is part of her charm. In fact, with her movements, she is more part of the song than many other more "wooden" professional violinists who just stand there rigidly.
1sorryham 7 months ago 2
@warioman91 Well when a musician is FEELING the spirit of the music swaying, tapping the foot, bobbing the head or whatever comes naturally. Just consider her gentle movements as a dance and enjoy.

A little slower than I'm used to, and the instrumentation was odd for someone who's listened to Jay Ungar's version so much, but I only have one other thing to say:

Like most people in the US the first time I heard this piece was when watching Ken Burn's Civile War on PBS. I was later surprised to find it had actually been composed in the 1980s. The only piece of music used that was not period to the show. It still pulls on my the Irish side of my family tree.

Wow... I've always loved listening to her play, her being an idol for myself, but I've never watched her.
I'm not ragging on her, but it's such an interesting way to play. her hand being much higher on the bow than most teach, and playing with a mute.
Beautiful, nonetheless.
RyuraXKomura 9 months ago
@RyuraXKomura She has a very good classical training but also a grounding in Irish Traditional. Her grip on the bow seems more out of the traditional. Most Cape Breton players are similar. As to a mute. I think that may be a pick up.. She is a much better player than I used to think.
sgtcrab1 9 months ago
@sgtcrab1...Yes exactly right...She has years of classical training, but can play classical and traditional with equal ease. Her instructors used to tell her she has to choose, that she couldn't play both styles, but she has proven them wrong again and again. She does hold the bow above the frog (gives her better control). Her violin is a 300 year old 9/8 size, and was given to her by a dear friend. And yes there is a mic attached to the violin, the transmitter is at the back of her dress.

Mairead Nesbit is one of if not the greatest violinist I have ever heard and I've heard some great ones including many really good Bluegrass musicians including my son in law who plarys with Denver based HIgh Plains Tradition, and Fort Collins based Bluegrass Patriots and the great Mark O'Connor.. lovely group...but she got some of the notes wrong at :24 to :26 seconds.
i've heard this song played hundreds of times throughout my life, from hundreds of sources enough to know it note for note. though i rely on jay ungar's rendition in the ken burns civil war documentary(thank you jay). even though i can't play it on anything...yet. but she did get some of the notes wrong at the aforementioned time...and again at 1:47- 1:48...
nice try though. :-)

2009Bolero 11 months ago
@2009Bolero Hi! The video and audio are slightly out of sync, but she's really playing. She's one of Ireland's premier violinists.
KathyGab 11 months ago
@2009Bolero....No she is not "miming"...She plays every note to every piece of music she plays.....She is a world class violinist and has the awards to prove it. She has taken years to perfect her style of playing, she can play "classical" and "traditional" with equal ease and grace... Anyone who has seen her live can tell you she is actually playing... Don't let a well know problem with You Tube fool you...
gaeilge101 11 months ago
@2009Bolero I was getting the same feeling....I have been watching a lot of her vids with the Celtic Women, and the sound and her playing technique don't seem to coincide, but I can't think why they would have her fake it...?
maiamwolf 11 months ago
@maiamwolf There are probably as many as a dozen cameras recording her at one time. Often when they edit the video together they use the "best" shot of her, and that shot doesn't always match the music she is playing. She plays her concerts live, lip-syncing a violin with a live audience presents too many unnecessary problems.
IntoTheMystical 11 months ago
@maiamwolf I'm not qualified to comment on technique or what finger should be moving at a particular note... But I have noticed in many videos on this site, not just Celtic Woman, that the video and audio are out of sync. I think it is because of this that many believe CW lip syncs in their videos. Got no idea or opinion on that. But two weeks ago I saw them live and was sitting close enough to hear them sing- not from speakers but them on stage- They don't lip sync...
William2020a 10 months ago 23
@maiamwolf....it's a well known fact that You Tube has a very common problem with the video and audio getting out of sync.
gaeilge1O1 10 months ago
I didn't know it was possible to over-emote on the violin, but she managed to pull it off.

I need to look at the version on the Celtic woman DVD. I think it might have come from there. I'm pretty sure this is at the Helix center. WOW talk about a close up of her violin. Someone must have used a very powerful telephoto lens to get that close to a violin being played.
drmayeda1 11 months ago
@drmayeda1....Yes this is at he Helix Centre in Dublin...this performance was recorded live for the DVD, several cameras were used including some "portable" ones so the cameraman could get close to the stage.. T

With love from a well-fed troll.
kaaren56 1 year ago
@kaaren56 Maybe someday you, or one of your dozen other names, will understand what this song and this caliber of talent means to people, and to music in general. But, being a troll, I suppose you just enjoy trying to pull down someone with more integrity than yourself ... that just wont work with Mairead Nesbitt.
TripBoomLikeThat 1 year ago

Jobotubular 1 year ago

Oh and get your eyes tested: those clothes cover all but her shoulders.
bfgh96 1 year ago

Then the readers can judge for themselves how many clues YOU'VE got.
kaaren56 1 year ago
@kaaren56 Pole dancing? MY, she really IS accomplished, isn't she? Why don't you base your opinion of this "average performing musician" on her musical background, education, accomplishments, and ability, which have gained her many honors and priviledges in the musical world, instead of sniping at her for her dress or her looks or her body. Sounds to me like you are jealous. That's just my calmly reasoned personal opinion, of course. Which is what these posts are for.
Cheryl1166 1 year ago
Out of respect for the composer and the origins of this piece, it would be damn nice if the title was spelled properly - it's "Ashokan Farewell", not "The Ashoken Farewell"!! I have seen more skilled and genuinely expressive renditions by other fiddlers; this whole performance- the revealing clothes, the pouting and writhing - I find rather pretentious and affected. Moving with the music is one thing; shaking your booty quite another.

@bottlebugg If that's what you think. :)
Y'know?
ShayDeLuca 1 year ago
